Also the use of autotune (in a pop song) doesn't make a track hyperpop or not?
My point is more so 1) if you had to describe what hyperpop sounds like, “exaggeratedly pitch shifted/auto tuned vocals” is one of its hallmarks and 2) PC music or hyperpop didn’t just come out of a vacuum
Um, yeah. Those are two things, but there's more characteristics about the sound. The drums are very uk, the overblown snares on top of it and ofcourse the mid 00's bubbely pop-sound pushed to it's limits. But you know that. I just dont think Cher belongs in this conversation, nor do I think it.. matters?
If we can call that Charli XCX song the greatest piece of music ever recorded, I can call Kate Bush proto-hyperpop (also, Charli's totally on record as being influenced by KB)!
Okay, but like what characteristics specifically are hyperpop-ish then that are excluded w other genres like art pop, synth pop.
Also, says who. Charli has always been pretty open about how 90's and early 00's dance culture and mid 00's pop has been a major influence on her sound. Kate Bush is none of those.

I just think it’s a fun thought exercise to think how far a certain genre of music goes back. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also love how once buttrock got out, grunge fell out of the picture completely while it has like max 3 great bands, tops.
Moving to grunge for now in hopes that it gets traction. Nirvana is great, I love a lot of music that pulls from that era, but it's barely a genre.
+1. Grunge is worse than hardcore, the latter is way more versatile and branched off in several other things while out of grunge we pretty much got nu-metal/buttrock. 🥴

Never really considered that the Knife might be linked to hyperpop but the vocal processing definitely goes along with that.
Same for Daft Punk and a ton of Diplo-produced stuff tbh.

When I think hyper-pop I think of fad lyrics, very danceable, but only relevant to ppl in that time period or 20 years later, to the younger generation. The sound is autotuned and easily palatable because it blends in other genre's styles.

Think we’re gonna have to have the same conversation with hyperpop that we did with blues but vice versa. Things that were inspired by blues are not blues just like how things that inspired hyperpop are not hyperpop.

Yeah nirvana is completely carrying grunge rn
While certainly talented, they are pretty much the worst set of musicians of the Big 3 [tm] of grunge. Grunge was instrumental in destroying hair metal. Problem is, there is a pretty small sample size of grunge bands due to ‘alternative’ becoming parallel and inclusive of grunge.
BV: What artists would you say have made the biggest impact on you as a recording artist?
CXCX: Definitely Kate Bush, The Cure and Bjork.
That's an interview from 10 years ago, okay lol.
You're right, when it comes to what I should reference as to an artist's influences, it should be random Internet forum comments, and not, you know, words that have actually come out of the artist's mouth.
I didn't expect the idea that Kate Bush was an influence on Charli XCX to be so controversial. Here's Complex, from two years ago, talking about it:
...her experimental, futuristic production provided a blueprint for artists like Charli XCX to push pop forward.
Here's another article from all of five months ago, talking about Crash:
Charli stans are picking up on sounds like Kate Bush during her Red Shoes era
And, not to harp specifically on Charli, here's another article that cites KB as an influence on FKA Twigs, SOPHIE, and Caroline Polachek!

She also can’t hold Kate’s jockstrap musically or in the realm of production. She also probably has people writing both her songs and music.

No. Because it’s going straight back to black culture and would mean certain elimination.

To be fair, the list of people who could match Kate Bush in these areas is very, very short.
