Really loved both movies. I hope the success of Barbie leads to more movies with real extravagant sets and costumes being made, with the stars in a cartoon/dollhouse world come to life, like the Popeye or Dick Tracy movies from decades past (or to go further back, The Wizard of Oz which this felt super indebted to plotwise as well). Potential hot take: I honestly think it benefitted more from a theatrical viewing experience than Oppenheimer did? Don't want to spoil anything for either just yet. I'm also glad that the Barbenheimer meme probably got more people to see Oppenheimer who wouldn't have otherwise

Loved Barbie so much. Such a smart and funny and subversive film. Makes sense why the right-wing nutjobs are freaking out about it -- it's a powerful film and will raise consciousness. I'm biased though because I love pretty much everything from Greta and Noah. The acting was solid, it was goofy and fun, the set and costumes were insane. It was meta but not too annoying and intelligent but not too pretension. And, we got those recliners in the AMC Dolby one, so I could roll on my side and my sciatica wasn't going insane. Highly recommend it. Hopefully doing Oppenheimer by the end of the week if I keep feeling better.
Have a feeling there will be a Barbie sequel that sucks.
If Warner Bros wants a sequel (and they absolutely do) it almost certainly will be without Greta Gerwig, and the recurring themes of her movies up to now are a huge part of what makes the Barbie movie excellent and I'm able to engage with it as more than just a good kids' film.
Specifically the themes of coming to terms with the real world and growing up as a young woman. It's remarkable that she has directed three different movies in the past six years that are all stylistically very different but feel part and parcel with one another thematically
I wonder if the cast will even follow up with a sequel (outside of Margot who is likely attached for more). They all spoke highly on the script so idk if they’ll be flocking to a sequel without Noah/Greta attached. I really hope the studio understand how much of a lighting in a bottle this movie really was but then again I’m reminded it’s WB.

I love that Barbie has made back its production budget in one weekend and that Oppie will make its back by this weekend. And both movies people keep talking about how great they looked, all in production design and cinematography. No CGI. It's like hey studios the answer to your woes is staring you right in the face.

Original makes more sense to me. Hope they win.
Barbie should go for Original since Oppenheimer is adapted. Why not pick your battles where you can win them. Theyll def go head to head in director, acting, production design and film.
The Sag Awards will be wild when they both just sweep each side of the drama and comedy categories.
Given the new diversity rules for eligibility going into effect this year and just the general way Oscar voters have trended the last few years I don't see Oppenheimer winning much this year apart from maybe Cillian. Film was very white and very male. Barbie probably has a better shot tbh.

Didn’t All Quiet on the Western Front upset a lot of categories this year though?

Nothing wrong with emptying the chamber on your first go but I wonder if Barbie 2: The Rise of Kens would have been better than having this one be so Ken-centric.

Same thing happened with Dunkirk. People were screaming at Nolan because there wasnt any diversity in a ww2 movie about british soldiers fighting nazis for some reason. Still won 3 oscars.
Barbenheimer now booked for Saturday. One hour break in between films.

But we're gonna gush over Scorcese's film cause he chose a story that kills native americans and meets the diversity requirements because of it. I guess Nolan could have shown Hiroshima and Nagasaki so he slips in the door by incinerating thousands of Japanese on screen.

I love how mad you are about something that hasn’t happened and your made up reasons it’s going to.
Anyway, certainly no way Martin Scorsese could deliver a film that stands on it’s own merits. The hype can’t be real.

And if you want to talk about actual backlash the year Dunkirk was nominated… that went to Three Billboards. Outside of some idiots on Twitter I don’t recall much criticism of Nolan for lack of diversity in a WWII movie.

Fun fact: Edward Teller (Benny Safdie) was one of two maniacs (along with Wernher Von Braun) that inspired the character of Dr. Strangelove. I wonder if his sunglasses during the test scene were a nod to Strangelove or vice versa.

You realize there are other ways to satisfy the diversity rules besides onscreen representation, right?
If Oppenheimer doesn’t win awards because of a lack of diversity, then what’s the fucking point in having awards?
“We almost didn’t give you the award you deserved because it was a biopic involving a historical event of almost entirely white people, but then we counted and you met your minimum requirements for diversity hires behind the scenes. You get your award now.”

Promoting diversity on film sets is a good and productive thing

Totally agree with you. But letting D and I be a weighted factor in your selection of a winner just leads to pandering. I would hope that if a film is excluded from the possibility of winning due to a lack of diversity, then they also exclude them from even being nominated.
At least then you could point to the film and say it didn’t win any awards because of xyz and not because another film was subjectively better.
