There are three middle eastern cast members in Oppenheimer so even behind-the-camera crew aside, it will probably still qualify. Question is really whether voters will pick it over more diverse films for the sake of optics and avoiding another incendiary hashtag.
It's an eligibility requirement, can't get nominated without it. And speaking cynically, it really doesn't seem that hard to get around.
That makes sense in regards to the requirements for being nominated. And I'm very cynical about the effectiveness of the new process.
In my experience, D&I initiatives, while better than nothing at all, are mostly for PR purposes and wildly ineffective in creating real change to the systemic problems of the organizations. In the context of Hollywood, it usually manifests itself with including side characters to fulfill demographic requirements - the "black friend", the gay character, giving the female character(s) a little more development. They can still stereotype these roles or diminish their importance, as long as they check all the boxes.
I work for a very large hospital system. I was in a system-wide focus group years ago, maybe like 2018, where they asked us in what ways can we improve on our diversity and inclusion as a company. In my division, there are over a thousand employees, the vast majority of which are female and persons of color. And while the gender breakdown of our divisions executive leaders were representative of the workforce (8 female AVPs and 1 male), they were not representative of the racial demographics (literally all white).
Everybody was giving suggestions to put bandaids on the situation, but I said our entire system executive team are white males with one white female. My division is all white leadership. Until we start hiring leaders who represent the demographics of our workforce, you'll never get beyond surface-level solutions. Now, a lot of this had to also do with systemically racist issues we face as a nation and as a state in that our mostly POC employees did not have advanced degrees, a requirement for most executive leadership roles, but that was certainly not the only issue here. We had quality candidates at middle management roles that weren't being promoted while others were being fast-tracked. We had a Fellowship program of mostly young white college grads that were given manager or director jobs as soon as they finished the program.
Fast forward to 2020/2021 in the wake of BLM, and our executive team (rightly so) decides to create a Diversity and Inclusion department. We now have annual training classes (like 30-60 min online classes) on biases. We have to make efforts to include diverse candidates for positions, but we aren't required to pick anyone.
It did manage to "solve" one problem: We now have a black female on the executive team. She is the Chief Diversity Officer over the D&I department. SMH.
Like I said, it's better than nothing but it just feels like we're checking a box to make ourselves look good. So much more could be done to fix the real problems.
The real progress we make as an organization comes from our various resource groups. We have resource groups for a large variety of groups: LGBTQ, Women, Young Adults, Asians, Black, Hispanic, Veterans, Disabled. Some are more successful than others, but they have enacted a lot of real changes in our processes as an organization, in particular our LGBTQ team. We call patients by preferred names, use preferred pronouns, etc.

Oppenheimer doesn't need random ahistorical POC shoved into the sidelines, but it does fumble the female characters, which is a Nolan signature at this point. Blunt gets her Oscar clip moment, but I don't think it's adequately set up or supported by the rest of the film. Really don't think it will hurt it with Oscars, though.

Felt like the Blunt character and their relationship was underdeveloped early on but it added weight to her actions later in the film so ultimately I think much of that was intentional.
Hilarious how conservatives keep having meltdowns over Barbie and liberal hollywood's success this past weekend.
wHaT abOuT SoUnd oF FreEdoM??? 🥴
The sounds of freedom thing is actually kind of wild. They are soliciting donations to “the cause” but the cause is just the producers/distributors wallets. Really not a fan of the trend where backlash to the backlash is a marketing strategy that works.

The astroturfing on Sound of Freedom is gross and weird, but it's also gross and weird how much traditional business it's doing at the box office. It's a genuine hit even without the pay it forward stuff.

Listened to several podcasts about the dude it’s based on. QAA has talked about him before but they had some Vice reporters on last week going into the details about how much his Org had lied about their “work” in saving trafficking victims. Fucking insane. But hilarious that the right falls for this stuff so easily while talking about the lying media!
"In light of its extraordinary performance, IMAX is extending OPPENHEIMER's run an additional week through August 16/17, with plans to bring back IMAX showtimes of OPPENHEIMER in the late summer/fall, as availability permits."

im curious as to what oppy was rimming the glasses with when hes making martinis at the guys house who watched his kids. they were clearly drinking regular martinis. im a bartender, theres no martini variation that ever gets anything on the rims, let alone in the 1940s. whatever he was rimming it with looked dark, so it couldnt be salt. cant find anything online, really puzzling

I haven't seen the movie yet but as a fellow bartender, if I hadn't seen that article, I would have assumed it was a lemon drop martini with a sugar rim. Clearly it was not.
Oppenheimer made me a lowkey WW2 Guy. Been watching YouTube videos called like "Hitler's Strategic Mistakes in World War II".
It's made me look up lots of videos on the evolution of the bomb. The Tsar Bomba is serious nightmare fuel.
This is such a crazy story. First fission-fusion bomb test. They expected a five megaton blast in what was meant to be a secret test, but it ended up being three times that powerful.

My husband used the to watch a lot of History channel. Every time I came home from work, Hitler was on the TV. I started calling it the Hitler channel.
