Everyone in the car needs to be at least 21 in the car for this to happen, and the driver must be completely sober. Now from what I heard police will still give you a hardtime but that is the law and the cops technically cant do anything.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
But remember this is state law. Any and all cities and/or counties are allowed to outlaw passenger drinking and most counties do. I do not know of any counties that allow open containers in the vehicle (tho I'm sure there are some.)
BTW, the reason the State won't outlaw passenger drinking is because people (most importantly the wealthy) love to road trip to UT footbal games. Every time the law comes up, big money defeats it so they can tailgate all the way from Memphis to Knoxville. Football Rules TN!
I can tell you don't like policeofficers Leo. I'm guessing that would come across if you were pulled over.
Nothing could be further from the truth! I greatly respect police officers, they do an important, dangerous job for ridiculously low pay. What I don't like is the justice system that seems to value detection of every wrongdoing over people's innate right to privacy. As far as how I would come across when pulled over, in the 1st post of this thread I stressed " It costs you nothing to end sentences with 'sir", "ma'am", or "officer" ". It's unfortunate that love of individual rights has come to be equated with hatred of police. In my mind it's the same as being against a war but having no ill will towards the soldiers who fight it.
Sorry, I don't mean to rant, I just don't want anyone to think I'm encouraging anyone to be rude or disrespectful to the police.
Also remember that the passenger can still be arrested for PD (public drunkenness) even if the driver is let go. Best to wait for serious drinking until your at Roo.

Agreed man. and there are some WONDERFUL cops out there who really are in it to serve and protect. Its a few that give them a bad name.
remember to use your turn-signals for every lane change as well as turns! I know officers that will follow a car endlessly just waiting for the first time they change lanes without signalling.
Yeah, the best way to avoid police problems is not speeding and remembering to use signals. They will be on more of an alert for longhairs with cars full of stuff in the days before Bonnaroo, but usually as long as they don't see a car with four kids in it packed to the gills and raging, they're not going to pull someone over. There are ways to discreetly enjoy yourself anyway, just remember not to swerve...and another thing that helps is staying away from packs of cars. There's a crackdown on Tennessee right now for "aggressive" driving, not necessarily speeding.
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but if you see a policeman on the shoulder of the road, switch lanes...that's the law in TN I hear. (plus it makes good sense)

We got pulled over for that just after entering Tennessee, got off with just a warning luckily, could have been much worse.
OMG You Americans are hilarious! I just can't believe it!!!! This whole drinking while in a vehicle is too wild! I can't believe it!
In Canada, if there is a bottle of liquor or a case of beer inside your vehicle rather than being in your trunk, you are going to be in big trouble. If that case of beer or bottle has been previously opened, you are screwed beyond belief. If an occupant of the vehicle is drunk or possessing the liquior in Canada, then the driver is at fault and you are still screwed. No booze in a vehicle here. To transport from store to home, have it sealed or better yet put it in your trunk!
Now what I read about Tennessee is you are allowed to have open liquor in your car, or possess it. I'm sure if a cop wanted to be a royla pain in the butt, he could fine the occupants for anything he wanted like drunk in a public place wouldn't he?
I just yelled up to my hubby who is upstairs and He roared with excitement! He can't wait to hit the Tennessee border (Guess that means I'm driving!!) And he would crack a pint just to say "He did it!" I don't blame him!!

Definitely MOVE OVER if a cop is on the shoulder. THEY WILL PULL YOU OVER FOR THIS! It's law in my state too and the cops are sticklers about it. You will get a ticket!
We in TN have had a few cops get hit by cars who got too close after they've pulled someone over. Moving into the left lane when there's someone on the shoulder, if the lane's open of course, only makes sense. And they are REALLY pushing to make sure drivers do.
It makes perfect sense, though. The one time I was broken down on the side of the highway, I would have definitely appreciated people moving over a lane.
In MN. the move over law was enacted in the memory of officer Ted Foss who was hit by a semi in south west MN while making a vehicle stop in 2000. It's a good idea to move over whenever someone is on the side of the road. Have you ever tried changing a flat on the drivers' side of the car on the highway? It's nerve racking!!! Only move over if you can in a safe manner. If you can't, slow down and move to the center as far as you can. 38 days to go, HOLY CR*P!!! ;D

You know, that's what I've found over the years... most cops would rather the sweet leaf be legalized and or decriminalized. This makes for less work for them. Ridiculous arrests/paperwork basically, of people that weren't causing harm or disruption anywhere in the first place.
My Dad is a cop, has been for 30+ years and even he has no problem with a little weed. He once told me he'd rather have me smoke pot than ciggarettes, because he knows how physically addicting cigarrettes are. He said he'd have no problem if it were legalized.
All I can say is that my life is pretty plain I like watchin' the puddles gather rain And all I can do is just pour some tea for two And speak my point of view But it's not sane, It's not sane
I just want some one to say to me I'll always be there when you wake
last year, it was quite a pain to acquire some good... this year might be different? I dunno. it would just be SO EASY to bring my own. but some annoying beagle could really ruin my good time.
grr.
