I think if I had a gun to my head and had to rank the TMV albums, it'd go something like this:
1. Frances The Mute 2. Amputechture 3. Tremulant 4. Deloused
As for ATDI? That's a little harder:
1. Vaya 2. in/CASINO/out 3. Relationship of Command 4. Acrobatic Tenement 5. El Gran Orgo 6. Alfaro Vive Carajo
BTW: I was just reading this thread and I came to a conclusion: I'm very lucky to be in company of so many awesome Mars Volta fans... I know it's corny, but I thought I was the only person who liked em, til I saw the HUGE internet community.
I feel the same way. It makes it even better because most TMV boards on the net are filled with pretentious assholes.
I think we need to make the effort to forever keep this thread on the 1st page. Any time anyone associated with SF/AC comes and sweeps through the good old inforoo (Im sure they do) they'll feel the 10+ pages of Volta love.
Mine goes a little something like this. 1) Tremulant EP 2) Frances The Mute 3) DLITC 4) Amputechture
I was very relieved to hear Amp was mainly comprised of stuff that was shelved over the years. Funny, a sub-par record (IMO) by TMV was still one of my favorite albums of last year.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
That's how I'd rank them....except the list really doesnt do my feelings justice. I have Frances the Mute and Amputechture waaaaaay ahead of the others.
FTM would be 1 for me, but I would say I'm partial to De-Loused because it was the first cd I had heard of theirs, and I really learned to enjoy it before listening to any other TMV. Amputechture at 3rd. I have quite a biased opinion. (Although that may be a little redundant)

Maybe i'm the exception here but, I really dug TMV from the first listen. I was always "take it or leave it" with ATDI but, when I first heard "Inertiatic esp" and "Drunkship (live)"...It blew me away! (<12" picture disc single. just bought it on a whim. totally random selection.) After hearing "Deloused" I was 100% hooked! Everything since has just been gravy on my biscuit! It's weird but, when you break them down to their elements, I still shouldn't like them at all. I don't like the Robert Plant vocal thing, the whole acid-rock scene, Cedric's crotch-rock attitude, the Long-winded "epic" songs, their dark pseudo-metal imagery, the studio-friendly jamming, lush-orchestral arrangements, Omar's ethno-pop hooks or concept albums in general! But, when you put that all together the resulting product is (often) as close to perfect as i've ever heard! I played several songs for my gf thinking, that while she would hate them, she should at least hear what they were doing. She quickly became moderately (if not more) obsessed with them too! The Mars Volta became the first band that we really got to know and love together, as a couple. Strange as it may be, they became a bonding experience for us. I won't ever be able to listen to "Tremulant", "Deloused", "Frances", "Scabdates" or "Amputecture" (not to mention our bootlegs) without thinking of her.....And I, for one, think that that's pretty cool! I understand why some folks are hesitant (or just plain put-off) but, If you give them an honest chance, they will win you over. No, they are not a terribly accessible band but, that's a good thing(IMO). In my experience, the music that takes me a while to "get into" tends to end-up my favorite. They are truly one of the best bands ever!

Sound like a plan. If it gets them to add the Volta, I'm all for it!

Where did you here this? I have heard it also, but from what I understood, it was all speculation, no solid proof that it was truth. I still don't know why everyone hates Amputechture so much. It may not be as good as the other two, but it is a SOLID record. I absolutely love half of it, and like the other songs. Anyway, my Volta goes as follows:
1-Frances (mind numbing experience) 2-Deloused 3-Amputechture 4-Tremulant EP

I had read it on the coma, and it was part of some interview Omar did shortly after the release of Amp.
I don't hate Amp, it just feels very rushed. The first 5 minutes of Tetra is pure TMV bliss, then they flush the song right down the toilet. All the movements on FTM flowed very nicely. It is an amazing piece of work. Amp really lacked that. Like I said though, a subpar album by TMV (IMO) was still one of my favorite albums of last year.

So guys... with EL-P being added a while ago, what's the chances of Mars Volta coming now? A little higher? I could only guess
my thoughts exactly.
I was thinking the same thing. I guess realistically though it only helps very little. They're friends and all, but have never been joined at the hip.
I also just thought of this. Omar will be releasing some new stuff this year. I wonder if the Quintet might play if TMV doesnt. Even if they do play, I'd love a chance to see the Quintet. Just some thoughts and wishes.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
I've always thought that the Quintet would fit better than TMV, especially this year. I still like TMV more, though, the Quintet is amazing! The self-titled album is one of the coolest fusion albums I've heard in a while, reminds me allot of "Inner Mounting Flame."
I remember a few months ago, when I first joined inforoo, I made a post on Damo Suzuki. Now, maybe his solo stuff wouldn't go over too well, but if God were to do his magic and get the penacle form of Can (Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Future Days) back together it'd be the best thing I think anyone could possibly see. I don't really think it'd be too far off to say that a Damo-Omar Quintet set could be possible. Though I'm not too sure of how often Damo goes out now adays, ha ah.

When I get my regular comp back up and running I'll up the quintet album and PM links to anyone who wants it.
I would say the Quintet is in the same vein as TMV, but differs in many ways. I havent listened to the album in a bit, but from memory their's larger use of horns and hand percussion. Not exactly as "thick" as the TMV sound. The band is Omar on guitar, Marcel on drums, Juan on Bass, Adrian on Sax/percussion and a guy named Money Mark on keys. I also know Damo has performed with them a few times.
Their new album is going to be called "Se Dice Bisonte, No Bufalo" and also features the man, the myth, the legend.... John Frusciante. It going to drop May 29th. Omar also did the score to a movie called "El Búfalo de la Noche" which has plans to be released. On top of that, he also just finished a collab with Zach Hill that should be released this year.
All that + a new TMV album, Live DVD and god knows whats else.

Cedric is the weakest aspect of the band but, it still works quite well on stage. It's one of the most amazing collections of musicians that you'll ever see on one stage. If one guy is less than legendary, that's cool with me. He is the front man (but he puts more energy, charisma and enthusiasm into his performances than any other vocalist that I can think of), so that tends to put people off somewhat. The chemistry between him and the band, especially Omar, more than makes up for it. It is incredible and unforgetable! The show in '05 was LEGENDARY! If they return, the WILL impress your ass off! I promise!

^yeah. i don't understand why he doesn't play guitar every now and then. on the few songs he released solo he's done all the instruments himself so like, yu know he can totally play. although i would miss the vocal effect jamming

He "fills" his TMV position very well, without a doubt! I dig him and what he does! They wouldn't be even remotely the same without him. It's just gotta be tough to perform with that collection of talent. Being the "weak point" in that group, still makes you pretty damn good! He can't play guitar on stage! I don't think his body is capable of cooperating that long!

Still one of my favorite videos of them ever. Shows Cedric at his best.
hahahaha. I clicked the link and immediately thought to myself "I bet its Roulette Dares from BDO". That vid has always been a stellar representation of them live. When I was much younger and got into bootlegging I learned really quick that 99% of boots will never give you a true representation of a band. Only on a true SBD rec. with someone who actually knows what theyre doing behind it will. That vid has always fit the criteria.
I dont know about Volta's live show. Judging from the reactions to the 05 roo show, they must kick ass, but judging from the the electric ballroom vids on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JovRNx40c6E) they cant achieve the scope of thier albums. Cedric is totally flat too. I really hope this is not a good representation of thier live sound, because they recently became my favorite band, and i have yet to see them live. Do they play with 2 guitars now?
Like I said above, don't EVER judge a band performance wise by any boot. Even if its an official DVD. Scabdates doesn't even come within shooting distance of a TMV concert experience. I remember the first 2 times I saw them, and being blown away by how dead on Cedric was with his vocals. He hits every single note he does on the albums. The big difference lays in the fact that there's no backing vocals, they're not layered, etc. On the boots that I have from the shows he sounds horrendous. Always sounds like he's not signing in key, not hitting notes, etc.
This also comes into play with Omar. No, they do not use a 2nd guitarist live and it has always hurt their sound IMO. I don't understand why Omar doesn't try to find another axe to use strictly for touring. Now only if John Frusciante would finally quit the Red Hot Dog Dookie Peppers. Now theres a band with a lead singer who absolutely CANNOT sing live for his life.
In summation, I can assure you that TMV is 1,000x better than what any bootleg has shown you.
