Sounds cool. I'm not worried about that right now, though, I'm mainly worried about the Mars Volta possibly NOT doing a North American tour. On the second or third post on this thread, I was almost certain TMV would be added/ go on a tour. Now, with the announcement that they are going back in the studio, I've kinda lost all hope. I pray to the Heavens every day for it to happen, but oh well.

I don't know what source they got it from, but the word around the comatorium is that there is a "Confirmed" release set for August of this year.
Ha ha. I love this band, I truly do, but a confirmed date with Volta is NEVER a sure thing. If they say August, expect December. Amputechture was supposed to be out June last year.
Does anyone have a link for their new song? Idle Tooth, right?
The link I posted in my earlier post, (page 8), has a live show on 3/15/07 in which they played that song. Good quality boot, pick it up if you want to hear it. =)

What I am about to paste is from a poster over at the Comatorium. It is old, but I just remembered it. Also, it is all speculation, but hey that's all we have here right? Anyway, if you are to believe this poster's theory, we may be in store for a double album. He speculates a little too much, but alot of it does sound reasonable.
as many of us already know, TMV is playing a myspace secret show at the troubador under the name deimos.
Deimos was the son of ares (greek god of war) and represented panic or dread. He had a brother named phobos, the god of fear.
These two also happen to be the two moons of mars. I kinda got the hint that the 4th lp might be a double disk, kinda like what RHCP and frusc did with stadium arcadium. One disk will be Deimos and the other will be Phobos.
I also believe that the 'gift' that omar found for cedric might have been some sort of sculpture of deimos (thats why they had the greek statues on the backdrop of many of the shows). The two disks will tell the story of deimos and phobos as they were always summoned together.
I really really hope we do get a double album. And not a double album like Ben Harpers, or Ryan Adams, where it is a double album that could fit on one disc anyway. If they do release a double though, I doubt we would have that problem.
Man, can you imagine the critical backlash of a Mars Volta double-album. HAHA, Pitchfork would have a friggin field day with that one...I'd love it though, if it didn't mean "oh, we released a double album, let's take 6 years off" (like NIN).
EDIT: also, didn't someone on the Comatorium provide a link that Deimos is a completely different band?
Post by greecianlover on Mar 23, 2007 13:21:25 GMT -5
yes, but, they are also a black metal band from over seas. There is no way that that band could charge $40 for tickets. I'm pretty sure if you read more of that thread, the posters on the board go over this?
I actually just now finished my first sit through listen of the bootleg linked above... And all I've gotta say is... wow. Everything was awesome about it. They seem like a refreshed band, compared to the performances with RHCP, which for the most part were rushed. Pridgen gives it a relatively different spin, I think he's a great drummer, and fits the band especially on the newer songs. I just don't like his drumming of the De-Loused songs nearly as much as Flemmings or Theodore. All around solid show though, and really good sound quality, one of the best 'legs I've heard of the Mars Volta. I think I'd give it a solid 4/5 as a Bootleg, all things considered.

Yeah, everyone I talked to about Roo '05 always brought up Mars Volta and how good they were. The way their performance was described to me is what first piqued my interest in attending 'Roo, couldn't make it to '06 but I am definately hoping for a TMV addition. I think it's very possible too.
well, you ask me why i'm drunk all the time it levels my head and eases my mind i just walk along and stroll and sing i see better days and i do better things

Sorry guys but I have to go against the grain on this one. I saw TMV when they opened for System of a Down in Chicago almost 2 years ago and was very disappointed. I had never heard of them before the show and wish I still hadn't. I don't know if it's their style but the entire set was filled with every member playing random stuff that didn't fit together while the dudes with the afro's screamed, jumped around and did the splits. After 4 songs of blaring nonsense I hung out by the beer stand till SOAD come on. Just my .02

Hearing Volta for the first time in a live setting, when you don't know what you are walking into, can be pretty hard to take in. Sh#t they were pretty hard for me to swallow the first time I listened to them on CD.
That being said, seeing them open for someone usually is not a good representation of the band. This goes especially for you, seeing as you had no previous exposure to them. The crowd is usually sh#tty, as it is for any opening band, and they are very limited by their time slot.
Give their albums a try. They are like no other band you have ever heard. There is ALOT going on in their music. It took me multiple listens to get into each album so far. Once it clicks though, wow! I compare them to a Zeppelin/Floyd hybrid on speed.
I would start with Deloused in the Comatorium, as it is the least out there, and most straight forward rock album they have made. If you don't like this, you probably will hate their other two albums. Personally I favor Frances the Mute, but it is a tough listen. There is a bunch of ambience and noises on the album. It is a long sprawling album, which will take you on one wierd journey, but damn is it a fun journey to take. Dim the lights,..., and enjoy!

^Thanks for the positive suggestions. I guess I can browse around and see if I can find more of their stuff that I might like. On the flip side, with that being my only post in days, some bunghole smited me for a non aggressive opinion.
I applaude you for dissenting unagressively. When I first the Volta I was like, "what the hell is this?" But Frances the Mute grew on me and by roo 05 I was hyped up to see em.
I can definitely see how an unexpected Volta show could startle or nauseate some.

That was 90% due to the developing situation with Jon at the time. It all culminated with him being kicked out for "lack of effort". Thats a situation that develops over time, not like the popular "you banged the wife of the lead singer". Universal has also dropped the ball with them numerous times. Both Amputechture and FTM were plagued by very slow pressing and distro times. To add insult to injury, FTM leaked almost 6 months ahead of time. You can only speculate on a release date if you know how deep a band is into recording. They should be heading into the studio for the last time throughout April. Omar has even begun mixing according to his brother. Post production will (ideally) run 2-3 months. So August seems doesn't seem too far off. I agree with you though. As a Volta fan I'll dream about August (Or earlier), but I'll be expecting September. There would have to be some horrific situation for this album to come out as late as December.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!

I really hope you are right. Or like the past two albums, this thing at least gets leaked months early. I will be downloading it as soon as it is out there, and I will still be purchasing the thing the day it comes out.
Like most any band, an opening slot just insults the talent of TMV. They are long-winded composers and performers. If you've ever read any of Cedric's favorites then you can see what kind of contemplation goes into their writing.
When I first heard At the Drive In, I absolutely hated them. Still not fond of them at all.
When I listened to De-Loused, I thought it was weird, but nothing special. I didnt really "get it"
When I first listened to Frances the Mute, I thought it was one of the best albums I'd ever heard. I still think that. Amputechture is also up there, But Frances the Mute is amazing. Since that, De-Loused has grown on me a bit.

i latched on to tmv on first listen too, but when i went back to atdi i loved it. i love the volta (deloused being my fav) but i think relationship of command is better than any volta realese imo (imo its the only atdi cd better than a volta album though)
I'm glad to see that you are such a huge supporter of Music Television, Steve. Ha, yeah, I think that most people have to get used to Mars Volta, mostly, and I hate to say it, because of Cedric. Now don't get me wrong, he's an incredibly versatile singer, and one of my favourite vocalists of todays music scene. But allot of people have a hard time getting around his tone, I've found. As for At The Drive In, I absolutely hated them when I first heard 'em around the time of "One Armed Scissor." I guess that was mostly me being a blind hater of anything new-punk or emo at the time (when I was in like 7th or 8th grade I think) But now, I absolutely love ATDI, such an incredible Punk act, and I'd say the best punk band in like, mm, 15 years. "Vaya" is one of my favourite albums, and "iN/casino/OUT" is getting up there...
I hate Mars Volta though. I don't know why people even want em at Bonnaroo.... (EDIT: just so I don't bet smited, I was being sarcastic on that last one there... Just makin sure...)
I first loved Relationship of Command, then that led me to TMV. I really, really like De-Loused, but have never been a huge fan of the other albums. Not too big on Amputechture either.
I think if I had a gun to my head and had to rank the TMV albums, it'd go something like this:
1. Frances The Mute 2. Amputechture 3. Tremulant 4. Deloused
As for ATDI? That's a little harder:
1. Vaya 2. in/CASINO/out 3. Relationship of Command 4. Acrobatic Tenement 5. El Gran Orgo 6. Alfaro Vive Carajo
BTW: I was just reading this thread and I came to a conclusion: I'm very lucky to be in company of so many awesome Mars Volta fans... I know it's corny, but I thought I was the only person who liked em, til I saw the HUGE internet community.
