Just got back. It was motherfarking sick. Had so much fun.
Paul, Omar, and Cedric started the night off with an acoustic set, it was awesome. Here is the setlist for it. To be noted, they played Miranda for the first time live. It was awesome.
Acoustic Set
1: Televators 2: The Widow 3: Miranda 4: Alisos Magdalena 5: Vermicide 6: Tourniquet Man
After that, The Eternals came on and tore it up. They need to come to Bonnaroo, they were unbelievable. They are a Dub/Electronic/Experimental band from Chicago and the lead singer has the stage presence of Cedric, which I think Cedric got most of his stage presence from since Cedric after the acoustic set said The Eternals are their favourite band, even before TMV was a band.
After that Peanut Butter Wolf had an amazing set, blew me away and I had so much fun with that set. Did the turntables to many, many songs from all genres. The highlight is when he turned on the turntables to "Walk" by Pantera. Oh yea, it ruled.
Then TMV came on and put on a fantastic show. Started off with Roulette Dares and ended the song with the countdown to the New Year. Continued the set and pulled out all the stops. Cedric was a madman. From throwing the mic everywhere, jumping from amps, taking one of Thomas' hi-hats and letting people from the crowd bang on it. Ad-libbing when people would throw parts of costumes on stage. Cedric pretended to be a baseball catcher when someone threw a Mickey Mouse hand on stage and he proceeded to sing part of the song with it on. It goes on and on. The entire band sounded fantastic and jammed so well. The setlist had a bunch of new songs and all sounded so good. Here is the setlist.
Electric Set List
1. roulette dares 2.viscera eyes 3.wax simulacra 4.goliath 5.conjugal burns 6.tetragrammaton 7.agadez 8.metatron 9.cygnus...vismund cygnus 10.ouroburos 11.ilyena 12.meccamputechture 13.aberinkula 14.day of the baphomets 15.drunkship of lanterns
Hope this is enough detail. Sorry you guys couldn't see it. I wish you guys could have made it, would have loved to see some Inforooers there. Well I had a blast and now I must go to sleep. Goodnight.
Excellent review, that sounds like a phenomenal show! One question, how long was Volta's main set? With all those songs, it seems it could have been 4 hours.

Yea great review. I can't wait to see them in Toronto in a few weeks. I can't believe they played Miranda, although it's safe to say we won't be hearing it in Toronto (since the acoustic set was something special for NYE).
I really hope these guys play Bonnaroo. I hope AC and Superfly read these forums, so they can see just how many are fans of MTV. I mean I rarely post on this thread and I'm a huge fan.
Can't wait til the line-up is announced next month (please let Mars be on the bill...)
Yep, I've already beat it. If you'd like some pointers I can help. Kind of a letdown, b/c I was hoping for a song download or something like that after I win, but nothing.

starting to get psyched for this show in columbus. i just finally listened to amputechture and its pretty solid. also heard a few of the tracks off the new album and liking them as well. it will definitely be nice to see them in such a small venue and get a good view.
I've been listening to the NYE show, both the acoustic set and the electric set. Great quality boots, and the acoustic stuff is wonderful. It's up on Trader's Den if you would like it. FLAC version as well.
Here is a big thread on there about The Mars Volta rumored to play on Letterman on January 18th. Check it out. Hope it is true because I will be watching.

Just got Paste in the mail... and they kinda trashed "Bedlam".
Said stuff about it being muddled and pretentious-- stuff that's been leveled at the band since their inception. They also said there were strong (yet poorly intended) funk elements in the new record, which I thought was strange. Anyway, just wanted to share. This certainly hasn't changed how I feel; The Mars Volta has always been a polarizing band, and I know where I stand.

At the same time, I'm sure once all of this is released, it will pop up all over the internet, rendering the reason to buy it, at least for me, irrelevant.

Something else to ponder though....they said the vinyl version of TBiG is going to be a gatefold that is a recreation of the Soothsayer. Since the USB drive is in the shape of a planchette (triangular or heart-shaped board supported by castors which moves to spell out messages, or answer questions on a ouija board), perhaps it will tie in to the LP.
While that is just speculation on my part, I think that sounds really cool. One would imagine that there would be some kind of cardboard planchette included with the album for anyone who might want to actually use the Soothsayer recreation, but maybe this is some way of mixing the old with the new. A USB drive with the digital files, which could in turn be used in conjunction with the good ol' fashioned vinyl LP cover.
Either way, this is really effing cool for us megafans and collectors.
