I'm the same way Chico... I've tried and tried... but that's cool... I hope they are there just so you guys will be happy... it's prolly one of those things where you gotta see 'em live. Like Phish. So if they are there I will totally go see them.

Ok, seeing as there is 29 pages of Mars Volta love I must be missing something. What should I listen to?
1st - I've seen them live but it was back in 2002. I thought the show was awful. Maybe I was different, maybe they were.
2nd - I've listened to de-loused recently and am giving it another listen just in case. But so far have never liked it.
1) Frances The Mute 2) Deloused 3) Tremulant EP 4) Scabdates 5) Amputechture
Considering DITC hasnt grown on you, check out Frances. Give them a shot in that order. Either they're going to grow on you, or they won't. They're just one of those bands.
This is actually totally unrelated to this because it's not yet up on the tracker, but could anyone kindly give me a waffles invite? I got completely screwed and left out in the cold. I had an amazing ratio on oink and demonoid before they got deep sixed. It would really be appreciated.
In return I can offer something small. To all you Volta fanatics out there that haven't been there, you need to sign up for this board. It's a bunch of Coma members who basically got sick of the coma. Really great community. Pretty much anything that is shared/happens with the band goes through there first.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!

So maybe this was already known to the more seasoned Volta fans, but I noticed that the free song ('Back Up Against the Wall') you got off their website after solving the puzzle is NOT on the new album. Is it a bonus track, or what? This is before listening to the album. If it's on there, under a different name, let me know.
edit: ah, nevermind. According to wikipedia's page for TBiG, "Back Up Against the Wall" is a Circle Jerks cover, and a bonus track for the album.
All right, I will give Frances a try. I always think I should at some point like them because I liked At the Drive In pretty well.
Oh, and Aly....thank god. I thought this was one of those its just me things. Kind of like how much I dislike Fightclub.
see, I absolutely despised At the Drive In, but The Mars Volta is one of my favorite bands. I think they're basically at two completely different ends of the music continuum.

I think that is a fair assumption, i feel the same way. Even though i hate to use the term acquired taste, if any band was, it'd be TMV. Don't let the popularity of this thread fool you, TMV definitely is not for everyone. Actually, this thread is a good sample of their kind of fan base, its about the same 10 people just posting a shitload. ;D As for the new album, you just gotta love a band that uses 75 minutes of a cd.
For anyone who has never heard the mars volta is the X- (at the drive in) Mexican Screamo Psychadelia Ramblings with a Twist of Full band Prior crack addiction.. Nice guys they are.

Going to see TMV in 9 days in Kansas City, MO. Should be a good time? Are they playing mostly their new album? I haven't heard it yet. Anyone hear it? Is it good? I love Frances & De-Loused, but those are the only albums i've heard.

When I saw them in San Francisco they played about 2/3 of the new album.
Good, the new album is sweet, but that was also their new years show, correct? The new album is definitely a return to form after amputechture, which i didn't care for. Just on the album you can hear how sick Thomas Pridgen is, I'm psyched for the Columbus show.
Just in case anyone didn't know, TMV is scheduled for Letterman tonight. I think someone may have mentioned it on here, but I believe you may have said the 18th, not today, the 17th.
Up on the top left of Letterman's website it has tonight's guest, and low and behold, The Mars Volta is one of them. Everyone make sure to DVR this, should be fun.

From what I have seen of other setlists from this tour, The Mars Volta has done variations of the New Years show setlist, but it is around the same.

Yup, it appears that the setlists are mostly the same this tour, with one song each from Deloused and Frances, then about 4 from Amputechture, and then a good 2/3rds of TBiG. From the reports of the shows on the Coma, they appear to be distancing themselves greatly from the first two albums. While those will always be classics to me, the new stuff is so compelling as to almost make me forget about the first 2. That to me is the mark of a classic band.
Columbus fast approaching and my mind is about to explode. Can't wait for Letterman tonight.
And I agree with ziggy....Mars Volta fans tend to be die hards. I just love a band with the artistic balls to make what they want, and let the people like it if they want. I can definitely see how some would be turned off by it. I just love the adventure of seeing what's to come.
At the Drive In were awesome. I liked them. But after the break up, we got Sparta and The Mars Volta, and I love each of them so much more than ATDI.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
i've been spinning their records in HEAVY rotation... and Amputechture is beginning to grow on me... i didn't like it at first, but that was because the cd my friend gave me was in the wrong order... i bought the cd, and it's way better now! :-)
Deloused is classic... Frances is their best IMHO... Amputechture is really good stuff... and Bedlam is well, a non-stop 75 minute single mindfuck entity.
Does anybody else feel that once you put in Bedlam it's 1 great big long track... in all it's glory...

here is a sample of the setlists(pretty similar Nightly):
Tour » 2008 » January 14, Terminal 5 (info) New York, US
Setlist
Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) Viscera Eyes Wax Simulacra Goliath Conjugal Burns Tetragrammaton Agadez Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus Metatron Drunkship of Lanterns Ilyena Meccamputechture Aberinkula Day of the Baphomets
in fact this is the same setlist they've played every show this tour...
I saw them last night and it was disgusting. The only thing better would be to see them on the farm. Heres hoping that roo is a part of their Bedlam tour.
To seem you're a dream when you never stop And we ask you what you are Belief as one with what you believe in Travel slowly Move in circles You know time grows old in reverse
I know I need to listen to Bedlam some more, with only having given it 2 listens thus far, but I'm not sure about this album. I thought Frances the Mute was amazing. Amphutechture is good, but getting a little crazy, and this one seems to try and outdo all previous weirdness. Which is cool as long as it's not just weird for weird's sake. Like I said, I need to listen some more.
