The show TMV put on at Bonnaroo 2005 is legendary. It's also once of those classic moments where, years later, every single person you've ever met claims to have been there, which is funny because the tent was freaking deserted about 10 minutes into their set. There was a sizeable crowd hanging out to see what the action was, then they started playing and frightened people who weren't prepared for the onslaught were running away, towards Galactic's Krewe de Carnivale or STS9. I had started way at the back of the tent, but by the time TMV had finished their first song, I was able to walk cleanly to the dead middle, right in front of the soundboard.
It was a glorious evening.
This. Thats what happened the first time I listened to them. It was Something off amputechture. I'm going to listen to Frances the Mute in the dark right now, I hope I can get into them. The way you guys are talking about them is making it seem like something I should not miss.

I started listening to them in late 06 with amputechture being the first album I had heard of theirs. It was so much more complex and different than anything I was taken aback by the music but immediately after it completely changed my views on music. I love all of the albums, and would say frances is my favorite.
That said, I really wanna hear them play cassandra, some songs from de-loused, and it would be awesome if they played some stuff from Old Money. when I saw them in september they played nothing from de-loused...(but was still the greatest show I have ever seen). I hope they are awesome this year.
That was tasty. I don't know how they got passed me, I guess I was living a life TMV fear. At points I felt as if I was in Floyd's on the run, or some twist Led Zeppelin. Definitely going to be there at bonnaroo =D
Yes, this is going to be my first Roo and Mars Volta show. I've wanted to see the Mars Volta and go to Roo for years now and both are finally happening. I remember a incident when I use to work at Ben and Jerry's and was playing Bedlam In Goliath in the store. This one girl started giving me a funny look, and finally came up and ask if I was playing two different CD's at the same time, Classic.
dasclyde, i beg of you to retell your experience of tmv in the dark. tmv is like listening to the words of god. its so beautiful and complex that its impossible to believe anyone other than yourself can understand it
alright, I'll tell you what stuck out. Cygnus Vismund Cygnus was very interesting. I enjoyed the switch from the slowish start to that primal intensity it went into. Somewhere in this song is where I started being reminded of pink floyd's on the run, towards the end into the widow. When the widow came on, it was very soothing, then it got a little creepy. Then L'Via L'Viaquez came on and started with that beautiful solo and the spanish...I had no clue what was being said but I thought it sounded beautiful in spanish, it was so striking. At the end of L'Via and towards Miranda, I heard the creepy slowed down voice, and starting wondering what the hell was going on, then that strange static started. Then when Miranda started it was very slow and moany. It got pretty powerful towards the end, I enjoyed that. And then Cassandra was like some all out space journey...I think I need to listen to it again when i have time, I feel like this won't be good car listening though heh.
I got to see Goliath twice this past year... first time, it was slightly over 10 minutes, so it was a somewhat extended jam. Then, when I saw them in September, the had mastered the song to a 30 minute beast... one of the best individual song performances I saw all last year.
i just went to the bonnaroo website and they have updated the mars volta's picture to the new band pic with Thomas. I can't wait to hear the praise hes going to recieve after this year's roo from noobies.
^Yep. He's gonna blow people away... like I said to the peeps I took to Asheville, "if you don't get into the music itself, just watch the drummer... he's awesome."

yeah, its funny when you see them live, the whole band will turn and watch Thomas at some point when playing, its so fucking hard not to pay attention when one man is tearing apart his kit that masterfully.
That's how I found Roo, as well. I was looking up old shows of theirs, found the Roo show, found out about Roo, looked it up a couple of months later and I find out Radiohead, Beck, Bonnie Raitt, and Dungen are going to be there. And that is history.

Benn waiting for this since 2000! at. the. drive. in. rocked, but TMV is in a league of their own...Cedric + Omar = GENIUS....The other 3 from atdi = Sparta which = some generic emo band
