Well, jazz isn't really one of my favs (i know i'll get smitted for that) and hip hop isn't my thing either. Give me something with some POP. I used arcade fire and mars volta as just examples. I mean, most ppl won't know who these artist are. I had no idea. and probably part of it is my indie hole. But one notable or name friendly band would have been nice, espically for the wait.
I understand where you're coming from, while I appreciate the additions, I don't know if any of them are artists I will be seeing (I like jazz, I like Bromberg, but there are about 15 artists who will be at roo that I will see first). I'm also in agreement that this did seem weak (at least in regards of name recognition) considering we waited over a month for these additions. Really I was just taking issue with your characterization of the additions as "lame". Being disappointed is understandable, but these adds are hardly "lame".

It's not really the bands that i was meaning were lame. More of waiting sooooooo long and getting bands i've never heard of or heard of anyone talk of.

Yeah this isn't a bad addition. Ornette Coleman i put on the same boat as Herbie Hancock which i think he did an awesome job when he played in 05. They aren't totally alike but both legends in jazz. El-P is good. The Flight of the Conchords is very funny. It is just good to see an addition.
Good god, Ornette Coleman!!! Him alone makes the anouncement GOLDEN. Shame on any naysayers! This man is a living legend. I can't wait to kick back with a brew and watch Mr. Coleman. I didn't even know he still gigged, wow!
the new El-P album is sick, i suggest checkin it out, i am not a big fan of hip hop shows but kinda cool aesop rock, el p, and rob sonic gonna be there
for those that don't know who el-p is, he started the Definitive Jux label in the late nineties, he has produced many classic (instant) hip hop albums and is really pushing the envelope of hip hop and what hip hop is in new york. his most recent productions are Mr. Lif's Mo Mega and Cage's Hell's Winter (which he worked on with the guitarist from Yo La tengo, however you spell it). His last solo album is called Fantastic Damage and he recently released I'll Sleep When You're Dead, which features trent reznor, some mars volta, among others. anyway, check out Aesop and El p cuz they are definately the cream of the crop in hip hop imo.
o yeah, and flight of the concords is a comedy act, but they play guitars. just youtube them

This addition sort of reminds me of the Codetalkers addition last year. People who knew who Bruce Hampton and the Codetalkers were got excited and everyone else sort of went "blah".
But Ornette Coleman's presence opens up A LOT of interesting possibilities. The guy's played with everyone and definitely brings the kind of cred that draws in other big name jazz artists. And El-P's presence added onto Aesop Rock's pretty much means the entire Def Jux crew will be there.
I mean, essentially what Superfly has done is exactly what I was hoping they'd do. They already have the big names so now it's time for them to spoil us with guys who will make potential collaboration speculation endless.

Ornette Coleman, el-p, David Bromberg - SWEET! way to bring the music bonnaroo - I for one am happy that we didn't get a bunch of indie bands added, there's already enough. This lineup is so sweet that I couldn't ask for anything more. THANK YOU BONNAROO

Right. So let's all point to Coleman and hint at how refined we are because we like jazz. Truthfully, outside of O.C., the additions are pretty lame, brahs. Especially considering the wait and the previous addition. I dig El-P's latest, but can anyone speak for his live delivery??

This is the kind of comment that illicits the response of "F*** you. If you don't like the Ornette Coleman addition, then put it into your pipe and smoke it until you pass out and wake up in a pool of your own vomit." Or something to that effect.

I've never seen him, mainly cause he's not as active on tour as his label mates are. (Whereas it seems Mr. Lif comes through town twice a year minimum). I've heard nothing but good things about his spit though. And this goes back to the Galactic late night show which will presumably feature Def Jux mcs with Galactic as the backing band.

I cannot speak in regards to El-P, however I'm going to once again argue that these additions are not lame.
First of all, I wouldn't expect more than one "big" name to come out in a given announcement, every single artist they add is not going to be someone you have heard of.
Secondly, David Bromberg. There isn't much talk of him because he is older, and a little more obscure, but that is a serious addition right there. Bromberg can play just about anything you want him to (and yes, he can and will jam out, for all you "jambanders").
How do you know this addition is lame? Have you listened to Midnight on the Water and decided Bromberg isn't talented? Have people heard the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, or are you just generally opposed to Jewish music? Do you even know what the Yard Dogs Road Show does? Quit disregarding things because you aren't familiar with them. It would be one thing if you downloaded these guys and decided you didn't like them, but people are discrediting stuff they haven't even heard. Bonnaroo is about expanding your musical horizons, not satisfying everyone's insatiable thirst for new indie music.

Yes.....this is a great eclectic announcment of artists. It is rare to see those names all listed together. And I think everyone here knows that one of the greatest draws of Bonnaroo is discovering artists that you may have never even heard of otherwise. That said, I look forward to more additions. And I'm sure that even those that haven't heard of any of these additions will be checking some of them out.
And to all you guys who think some of the people here need to get out of their "indie-hole", how 'bout you meet them in the middle when you come off your high horse? Ornette Coleman's name will be long remembered after 80% of the bands at Bonnaroo are dead and gone. Does that lessen the impact of the more modern bands? No.

I wasn't trying to demean the impact of modern bands, I'm actually a big fan of the indie genre, but I think a lot of these "indie" kids need to get back to their roots. The initial line-up was heavy on the side of indie/jam bands, so I think its good we got some more time-tested artists. I wasn't suggesting that Coleman lessens the impact of modern bands, merely that in terms of "bigness", this is bigger than some of the indie requests people have had.

I say the addition is "pretty lame" for a very simple fact. Most everyone who cared to comment regarding additions was looking forward to a major act. I, for one, would be hard pressed to miss any one of the great acts we got OVER A MONTH AGO for one of today's additions. I didn't know that was worth a f*uck you...

My point exactly. Sounds pretty lighthearted to me. Sorry I missed the jazz appreciation thread.

This is all relative to what, to you, constitues a major act. This isn't major to you, but when I told my father that David Bromberg had been added he almost didn't believe me at first. To him, that is a MAJOR addition; as far as he is concerned, Bromberg should be a mainstage pre-headliner. Albeit, my father does not represent the majority, I think you are being musicentric (totally a made up word, meant to be like ethnocentric, but in regards to music). This isn't a major addition to you, that's fine, does that make it lame? only to you. You should have said something like:
"I dont like this round of additions because older jazz artists and more obscure acts don't appeal to me. I'm looking for something that I read about on pitchfork last month."
The above, is explaining how you feel in regards to the situation. Instead, you said:
"These additions are lame"
That is a blanket statement about the arists, not your personal feelings towards them, and that is why people took offense.
However, I certainly wouldn't say f*ck you in response, you don't deserve that.
