There are gonna be A LOT of "older" bands playing...and attracting "older" crowds. The Police aren't the only bands/performers playing that have been around a while.
I think that the only thing that could ruin Bonnaroo are jackass PEOPLE. I don't think any band could ever ruin Bonnaroo.

I agree with all you had to say. I just wish people with think about the relativity of the situation. Let's take Tool for instance. I was listening to Tool in '92....when some of you were, what, learning to speak full sentences?
yeah lol, The Police arent the only "older" artists and not nearly the oldest.
Ralph Stanley anyone? Ornette Coleman? Charlie Louvin? Hot Tuna? Mavis Staples? Richard Thompson? Blood Ulmer? T-Bone Burnett? Junior Brown isnt all that young either.
They attract a large (and considerably older) crowd that could conceivably be vastly different from the standard Roo crowd and who knows what that could mean for the festival as a whole.
Sorry if this phossil's walker takes up too much dancing room.....

I think everyone sort of missed my point here. I said at the end that I really don't think the Police or any band will ruin Bonnaroo. All I was trying to show was that there are plenty of reasons to think that any number of bands on the lineup doesn't quite fit in. I chose a popular band to try to show this better, but it didn't seem to work. Personally I think my argument about the Police ruining things is as ridiculous as some people's argument about Tool ruining it.
Hell no tool wont ruin it... Going to San Antonio tool in 13 days woooo its been cancelled twice... should be a good show.
Can't wait to hear Parabol/Parabola (I hope), Schism, Lateralus, Aenima, Vicarious,Jambi,The pot (overplayed though),sober, on and on whatever they play pretty much..
Nearly every Tool fan ive ever known was totally chill... People have serious misconceptions if you think Tool is anything like RATM. Most tool songs rhythm change alot to... dont think there will be alot of moshing just people completely tranced into their songs and lighting effects.

Yea i think some people are focusing on the wrong things and are (probably a little slow ) missing the big picture. Bonnaroo is hands down the most awesome fun you can have in the summer. For me it's my summer Christmas multiplied by fourty. That being said, all ya gotta do is show up and listen to music and enjoy yourself. Bonnaroo takes care of the rest, because thousands apon thousands of people are there for that very same reason. Music and good times.
there is a line between metal and prog-metal that is not as thin as you might think, im pretty sure tool as a band would agree with me that they are more progressive than they are metal - progressive rock fits right in with bonnaroo, metal? ehh.. anyway. tool fans are definitely not of the same mold as generic metal music, tool fans (including me as of a few months ago) view tools music the same way that anyone views art, as an expression of meaning. there is no chance of this putting any sort of damper on anyones good time.

This is a post from the Coachella board, from someone who was at the Rage show … ok, I know, I know, rage and tool are too different bands …. But I just want people to know that have never been to this kind of show, only to DMB or WSP etc, give the kids some room and just enjoy the show …. If you think you need to be in the front because you have never seen tool, or been in a radical situation for a show, this might not be the show to wet your wings … I have done those shows for years and years, but alas, I will be nearer the back, sitting in my chair, and just enjoying one of the best bands around … tool … cr****
Incrediblly brutal, i was in the middle center like five feet away from the stage on the left side of the main stage. I was at the Main Stage waiting for Rage starting at 1 o'clock when fucking Mika was playing and I waited it out over there to get good positioning until Rage. The crowd started getting rowdy during the middle of Crowded House's set. Everyone literally lost all their energy before Rage came on b/c the crowd was SUPER SUPER SUPER packed and everyone was pushing oneanother even though you couldn't move AT ALL. The left-front before the first fence/gate has like the capacity for like (i don't know) 300 to 400 people, but there was like 1600 people there... and when Rage finally came it was the craziest thing I've experiecned. Just about EVERYONE went absolutely nutz. After People of the Sun I felt like i literally going to die because it the most brutal in the way front. Someone was choking me and people were literally passing out.... I saw at least 12 people that passed out that had to be lifted out of the front over the gate where the security guards were (and that was only for the first three songs) and I saw some big fat guy laying immobilzed not being able to move while everyone was stomping all over him. I swear I saw some guy seemingly break his back too. I left after People of the Sun b/c I thought I was literally going to die if I stayed for another song. Lets just say it this way, my shirt and undershirt were both torn off and my backpack tore after Bulls of Parade. I have had close calls with death, but this was probably the closest I've been to it. I would be VERY surprised if no one died. All in all, it was absolutely incredible. I never felt that much energy in my entire life. Rage against the Machine is the greatest band of the past fifteen years and I can't fuckin wait to see them at Rock the Bells.
Its not just that RATM and Tool are two different bands with two different styles. The difference between a RATM concert and Tool concert is massive. RATM would be all about the energy, and crowd movement and such. Tool is completely different than that. I'm completely serious when I say that there is generally less agressive crowd movement at a Tool show than at a *insert random indie/jam band* show for the simple reason that everyone is far too busy focusing on the music itself and having their minds absolutely blown. That's not just me as a Tool fan, that's just how it is.

Superfly would not let a band ruin Bonnaroo or even let a band come if there was a possiblitly of that happening, period. RATM have not played for years and thought they never were going to play together again. That is why it was so crazy. I promise you if Tool broke up for a few years after saying they would never play as band again, and they came back, they would have the same kind outcome. But Tool is touring and you know that you are going to get a prog/psych rock show with them, with maybe a few douches thrown in there like every show has. End of discussion about Tool ruining Roo people...it just wont happen!
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

As a person who does not like Tool at all, and I mean not one bit (no offense to any Tool fans, I just don't enjoy them)...I can confidently say they will not ruin Bonnaroo. As has been said before, every band has some fans who are douches, big deal. That being said, I will find something else to do during the Tool show, and that is all there is to it. Its unfair to sterotype fans of certain bands and even more unfair to say a band will ruin an entire festival with over a hundred musical acts.

Dude - they exist in droves, believe me. Go to any metal show in a midwest college town and you'll find plenty of what I described. Yes, I know the next response will be "Tool isn't metal", but they certainly aren't a jam band either. I have personally met individuals just as described - unfortunately.

Yes, there will be a *few* sterotypical tool fans in black baseball caps turned backwards and wearing armbands and calling everyone "bra" while they walk in groups with their high school pre-frat brother buddies... but honestly, I don't think they will have much of a dent in the atmosphere at Bonnaroo. I do like Tool - especially their psychedelic rock vibe... not so big on screaming and bumping into people - I'm excited about their show, should be fun.
The hell are you talking about? I've never seen one Tool fan like this. Tool = mind expansion, not fist expansion.

To clarify - before I'm told "you are stereotyping... why do you think Tool will ruin things?!?!?" - I never said they would. In fact, I like and am looking forward to Tool... huge headliner, a highly respected act, psychedelic, entertaining, and a great mix-up to the other artists.
