That episode was garbage. You'd think they're trying to stretch it out for another season past the next with episodes like that. Yeah, Hurley was funny. Yeah, the folks that are looking for the sh!t in the shadow of the statue contacted Miles earlier. Who cares? Farraday's back. That's about the only good thing about this episode, IMO.
And we have to wait 2 weeks AGAIN for a new episode, WTF? Sorry, I'm a little pissed, and highly disappointed at that.
Aww, danbird, why the hate? I enjoyed that episode because I've been looking forward to Miles' backstory since he was introduced. And it was nice to finally have it confirmed that Pierre Chang is his dad. I've been speculating for a while, but now we know for sure. At least it was something new instead of another Kate/Jack/Sawyer episode, those are getting old. I'm super excited Farraday is back.... 'Bout time.
Never fear, next Wednesday is my birthday, so you can all come party with me and forget that there's no new Lost
Never fear, next Wednesday is my birthday, so you can all come party with me and forget that there's no new Lost
Friday is my birthday
The hate is cause I'm tired of these distraction episodes. It was entertaining. Yeah, ok. I want substance though, damnit. I feel the Lost clock ticking and I WANT ANSWERS!!!
I want answers too and I think the season finale is gonna be chock-full of answers. I feel that when we get answers from Lost, we seem to get them in one big lump. I guess I didn't have my expectations high for this week so I wasn't really let down.
Happy early birthday, danbird! Party at my place next Wednesday, Druid!
I would rather they just spread out the answers though. Not give us little tidbits that we kinda already knew. That's what this episode was to me. I knew Faraday was on the sub. I knew the Dharma video dude was Miles father. I've grown to loathe these episodes throughout the seasons. It's filler. That's all it is.
It's prob good that there isn't a new episode next week though. I have a big editing project due next Thursday. Yeah. Procrastination.

I didn't mind this episode, mainly because I spent the whole thing trying to figure out if the title is as much a reference to Norse mythology as it was to Star Wars, having read a suggestion that it was just before starting the episode. Seems somewhat possible, but I need to read about the myth of the battle Ragnorok thoroughly, because at this point Ben seems to fit two characters in the mythology and that doesn't make sense. But I'm not very familiar with the story yet, so maybe it is workable.
I am sick of every single guy on this show having major daddy issues. It's boring, and besides, nobody's sad daddy story is ever going to top the supreme quacked-upedness of Locke's, so it would be nice if they would try a totally new direction for backstories. It would also be nice if Kate stopped being a TOTAL MORON for five minutes.
I agree with Airplane about Daniel - he looked like he'd been dipping into teepee dude's sugar cubes.
Yeah, they might as well have just given that title to every episode. Booooring.
After reading about twenty different versions of Rangarok and other Norse mythology, I don't think this episode really leads down that path and the episode title was probably just a really lame Star Wars reference. There are some interesting parallels to Norse mythology though. There's a Dharma Initiative station in Iceland. There is a story about Baldur, Hoth and Loki that precipitates Rangarok (Rangarok is basically an epic battle leading to the destruction and eventual rebirth of the world) and that story does seem to relate to Ben and Locke. Basically Loki, known for deceit and trickery, is jealous of Baldur, but can't kill Baldur himself, so he tricks Baldur's brother, Hoth, also known as Hodor or Hod, into doing it. Ben is jealous of Locke, but can't kill him because of his promise to SmokeyAlex, and I fully expect him to try to trick someone else into doing it. In the mythology, this event leads to a battle that causes the total destruction of the world, after which Baldur is resurrected and the two survivng humans repopulate the world. If Lost is going down that track and Kate and Jack are the relative characters to repopulate, I will vomit. Alot.
There is also something about Odin, who is Baldur's father, frequently asking opponents a trick question about something he whispered to someone (can't remember who now) after Baldur's death, and I thought that might relate to the new "what lies in the shadow of the statue" question everyone keeps asking. The answer to Odin's question is believed by some scholars to be "resurrection." Also, characters in Norse mytholgy seem to die and come back to life fairly regularly. That's pretty Lostish.
Yes... unfortunately, the title was a Star Wars reference. I have to admit, I haven't seen a single Star Wars movie all of the way through. So I have no idea who/what Hoth is, and I could really care less.

Indeed. I think this is where he was going with Cesar, but then changed his mind. Maybe Ben thought Cesar was going to kill Locke before he was finished with him? Locke seemed to know where Ben needed to go to face the Smoke Monster. I fully expect Ben to try to get Sun to turn on Locke by telling her it's his fault that Jin ended up in 1977. She's ready to kick someone's a*s.
One of my co-workers pointed out that the Brahm (sp?) guy, that snatched Miles off the street and into the van, is now on the island! He's with Ilana, the bounty-hunter lady that had the gun and asked "what lies in the shadow of the statue?" to Frank. We looked it up and it's the same guy. So the big question now: who do these people work for??

I was disappointed with the episode at first as well Danbird, but after thinking it over for a while it really did have some interesting stuff in that I think will become meaningful. The miles backstory was there for a reason not just for our information. I think something significant will happen between Miles and Pierre Chang. Maybe the incident that prompts Pierre to ask his wife to leave the island with little Miles. Also, I think Hurley will do something with the building of the hatch, he will influence it in some way I am not sure what way yet though. I think it is obvious the most important thing to happen was Daniel's return. I believe that is the first step to getting the losties trapped in 77 back to their normal time. Daniel came back for a reason he has to have some kind of information about what is happening and how to change it.

Wow, great catch! So that guy was working against Widmore for that expedition, and he seemed to be doing so for moral reasons rather than mercenary cash issues. Maybe there is someone much more powerful than Ben or Widmore...unless Ben hired them but they don't know it...or Jacob somehow...I don't really want any new major characters. At this point that would feel like cheating.
.I don't really want any new major characters. At this point that would feel like cheating.
We still don't know anything about Hanso (The guy that created Dharma). Don't know if he's behind these mercenaries, but I feel like we will meet him eventually.
I am sick of every single guy on this show having major daddy issues.
You know what I realized? Almost everyone, male and female, has daddy issues. The few exceptions are: Juliet, she had ex-husband issues instead; Sayid, but we haven't met his dad, I don't think. (and some dead characters, but I won't name them)
Obviously, it's a recurring theme, but I also think it's an important underlying point. Not sure how though. The writers are just very deliberate with what they do, and I don't think it's a coincidence that they all share the same type of issues.

This makes sense. I was trying to figure out last night, if Ben did kill all of the Dharma folk, did he warn Ethan beforehand, and if not, why didn't Ethan die? But if Ben just killed his father, then maybe somebody else decided to let Ethan live . . . or maybe it was Ben. I don't know.
I was wondering why Ethan was participating in the first place. Isn't he part of the Dharma Initiative, and Ben is part of the Others? That'd be breaking the truce.

Check out what I just found.
* The real-life Dr. Richard Alpert (aka Ram Dass) is a noted psychologist and Hindu spiritualist. In 1963, he was dismissed from Harvard University for his research (in collaboration with Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg and others) into psilocybin, LSD-25, and other psychedelic chemicals. He later traveled to India, where he was given his Hindu spiritual name "Ram Dass", which translates as "Servant of God". Alpert wrote of his experiences in an unusual tome entitled Be Here Now, and founded the Hanuman Foundation. See Bio and Wikipedia entry. Damon Lindelof confirmed that the character of Alpert was indeed named after a famous person. [1] * Richard Alpert's colleague Aldous Huxley wrote a book called Island, which has been referenced in Lost, most specifically with regard to the Pala Ferry; Pala is a Utopian island in Huxley's book.

I'm not completely sure that Horace is Ethan's father. I think Ethan's father is Amy's first husband, the one that was killed and whose body was taken by the Others (when the first Losties arrived in 1974; Sawyer negoiated with Richard Alpert to take this man's body since he killed two Others). I believe that this man-- I can't think of his name-- is actually alive and is Ethan's real father. Amy could be a spy for the Others, and could have been before her husband was killed, and married Horace since he's the one "in charge" of the Dharma iniative. If this were true, then it would be easy for Ethan to be an Other, with the help of his mom and real father. It's purely speculation, but it makes sense to me
And this isn't my theory, but Hurley could be the one responsible for "the incident". During last week's epsiode when he was at the Swan's construction site, he commented that they were building the thing that housed the computer that crashed their plane. Maybe he goes in to try to sabotage the construction of the hatch and something goes badly wrong.

It wasn't even a good recap show, it seemed like it was put together by a high school media class. They should have just reran the Locke/Ben episode - I've watched that three times now and I'd still have enjoyed it more than that recap.
Any fan of lost should check out the new issue of Wired magazine. JJ Abrams is the guest editor and it is the Mystery issue. Some really good articles and there is apparently a bunch of hidden lost stuff in their. I have had a chance to comb over every page yet but it is a good issue.
