Because only they can see them. It could explain why they see them when they are alone with MIB. They are the childlike innocence the MIB is trying to get rid of.

Thw Whispers aren't just any old dead people, they're the dead who can't move on because of bad things they've done. I don't think that would apply to Alex.
I thought so too from what Michael said, but what about when Ben saw his dead mother on the island when he was a little kid? Didn't he hear the whispers first?
I remember Harper (Goodwin's wife) saying to Juliet "Whenever you hear the whispers, you'd better run" or something like that. At that time I figured the whispers meant that the Others were around and coming your way.
Just read Doc Jensen's recap. More usual crap that isnt really relevant. However he had one cool theory that I'm not sure I agree with but would be incredibly awesome.
The reason MIB threw Desmond down the well is because he stumbled onto his big secret. He's actually John Locke!
He goes on to say if that were true he thinks MIB is in the body of Frank Lapidus.

Yeah, people were always hearing the whispers right before bad stuff happened. I think maybe the whispers function as sort of an alert to the living that something is about to happen, ghostly or otherwise. I don't think all ghosts are whisperers (Alex, Ben's mom, Isabella), nor are all whisperers visible ghosts.
I don't know how to explain Locke's body laying on the ground as the MiB walks right by him on beach. So I don't really think that theory holds water.
I really hope they have a good explanation for this - preferably one that allows a return of the real Locke. I hope it's not just a continuity error and the writers just forgot that Christian's body disappeared when used by MiB. It's so tragic the way there are two Locke bodies that could be fully functional on the Island, and the real Locke is stuck in a paralyzed version that just got smashed by a car. No fair.

I thought the kid was Aaron... but after realizing it was two different kids, I think Airline is right.
As for Locke being Locke... I don't really agree with that. That would mean Locke is the smoke monster... wouldn't Frank be the smoke monster if he was MiB?
Locke pushed him down the well because he can't kill Desmond, because Desmond is the secret weapon. Didn't he say it would violate the rules of the island?

Well, it seems that the kid in the jungle from "The Substitute" is the same actor in this week's episode, but with different colored hair.
One of the blogs I read had a theory that Jacob and MiB are the same person. Her idea is that Jacob is the angel on one shoulder and MiB is the devil on the other shoulder. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it makes some sense....

^^ haha, no. Well, I guess it would be everyone's shoulder so we could include the kids in that. One representing good and one representing bad. It's up to you, the individual, to chose which one you go with.

Unfortunately they only go through season four. They're pretty funny to read, one of them says about Shannon "she drives me crazy." Heh. But they neither prove nor disprove what Michael said about them and seem to me to be more like Cosmic Gossips than anything else. They mention "the brothers that help us" which I think suggets Jacob and MiB are brothers. Boone seemed to be one of the voices when Shannon is killed.

good episode. nothing mindblowing but good action. seems everything is about to change. any speculation as to why widmore is holding everyone captive? i'm going to take an educated guess and assume sayid didn't kill desmond.

No, there's no way he killed Desmond. I think Widmore is using everyone to get the island for himself....and because he's a dick.
