Well, just finished watching this week's episode. I was (unfortunately) spoiled yesterday in learning about Sayid's death. But, I was prepared for it to happen anyway... I've been expecting it to happen for several weeks now. I didn't cry, surprisingly, considering Sayid is/was my favorite character. (Streetbum, I also kinda cheered when Kate was shot.)
I'm a bit sad to see Sun and Jin go but I think their storyline had run out anyway. Their death scene was a bit too Titanic-ish: "I'll never let go, Jack" = "Sun, I'll never leave you again"... I mean, c'mon, a total rip-off.
I think Desmond will end up saving everyone's a$$es.
Loved the episode! Great acting. Jacob's and Man-in-Black's motivations explained. But, we still don't know who/what their crazy mother is, where she came from, and why she was in charge of protecting the island. I'm not sure we'll ever get an answer, as there are only 2 episodes left.
The episode was pretty good... but I feel like they still have a lot left to explain and only 3 1/2 hours to do it. I also wish they would have given us a hint at the date. How long ago did all this happen?
Another question, which may be completely stupid but I just want to clarify: Jacob killed MiB, correct? And the Smoke Monster that came out of the light-spring thing is his soul which can inhabit others (including his old body)?

Yes, that is my understanding. I also wish they gave us a date, but I would guess it was between the 10th and 15th century. Any longer and "Adam & Eve" would have been piles of dust. Right?
Ok, so if Jacob killed his brother, and MiB killed their "mother", is that why they can't leave the Island? Because they are stuck there like the others (such as Michael) that have done bad things??? I didn't feel like that was explained very well, why they can't leave.
Jrpacman, I have no idea how long it takes a body to turn to a pile of dust but given the humidity of the Island and the scavengers, I'd be surprised if the bodies lasted more than 50 years or so. I wonder if the Temple and the Four-Toed statue were built by Jacob or if they were already there?

I've really been enjoying this season a lot, but last night's episode gave me a glimpse of the satisfaction I thought JJ Abrams had no chance of pulling off Totally can't wait for next week now!!!
Also, Allison Janney was freaking riveting (as always), KICKASS casting, and I really hope we get to see more of her before the end (someone here at work thinks she signed on for 2 episodes, so...)
The "mother" told them they couldn't leave even before Jacob killed the MiB. But it seemed like she wanted them to stay to protect the light and not so much that they were stuck and couldn't leave. But perhaps when Jacob drank the wine and MiB became the smoke monster, that is what prohibits them from leaving.
Now in earlier episodes when we saw Jacob and the MiB talking and drinking that bottle of wine, was that before or after Jacob killed the MiB? I think it's after but wasn't 100%.
I think that when the "mother" told them they couldn't leave when they were kids, it's because she just really didn't want them to. They actually could have left at that time. However, once MiB went into the light that trapped his soul on the island. I assume that happened to the "mother" as well in an earlier time and that's why she was so adamant that they never go into the light.
Jacob never went into the light, and was able to leave the island...as he did several times in crash survivor flashbacks. I guess that once MiB went into the light, he was no longer a danger to destroy it, so Jacob felt it was ok for him to leave the island from time to time.
There are still about 1,000,009 questions that need to be answered, but I'm afraid we're just gonna have to settle for this answer: it's magic.
Also, the boys in the forest earlier were Jacob and the MiB when they were younger. I know everyone thought that already but it was a nice confirmation after last episode.

I hope we see her again... there are still so many questions, and she probably holds the answer to a lot of them, at least answers about the Island.
I'm curious HOW Jacob left the Island. By way of the frozen donkey wheel? Ship?
Who built 'frozen donkey wheel' if their mother filled the hole back in... so many questions, so little time.
Good question... I hadn't thought of that. I'm guessing that either she didn't kill all of MiB's "people" or that people that arrived later did it. I really doubt Jacob did it.
And Druid, the phrase "frozen donkey wheel" isn't mine to steal... wish it was though! ;D
so the mother told them when they first saw the light that no one was allowed to have it. my understanding is that when MiB went in there and came out as the smoke monster that he now IS the light, no? That's why he can't be allowed to leave the island or life/death will all be kaput. but clearly all the magnetic/frozen donkey wheel stuff still worked with the main Losties so maybe not. Or is MiB just one piece of that energy? Man I thought I had it but now as I write this I'm confusing myself.
anyway, kudos to the writers. I really like how we were lead to believe one was good and one evil, they kept us from knowing which was which, and then they weaved and plot where both have different motivations, but are essentially just doing what they think is right.

I bet MiB put the donkey wheel down there in an attempt to get off the island later. Also I was thinking maybe the mother was the smoke monster and the Jacob-like guardian before. How else did she destroy the well and kill all those people that easily? And then when she died one son took over each half. Also Leno would have worked out much nicer if the mother just explained everything and told little MiB why she needed him to stay.
Also the knife MiB stabbed his "mom" with looked like the same knife that Dogen handed Sawyer and MiB handed Richard. MiB stabbed his mom before she spoke if that is important. Those were just some observations I made and other people connected for me, well the second part.

I've heard several people say that they believe she was the smoke monster before, too... I'm trying to put it all together but there are so many pieces missing.
When watching it I felt as though Jacob seemed a bit... slow. Was it because he was "all good" and so naive? Or are we going to find out something about him in the next episode? Cuz really... he seemed pretty "with it" in all previous episodes - very calm, very intelligent, very all knowing. In these, as an adult he seemed to still be very childlike.

Even though he was an "adult," isn't it like hundreds of years, or at least a LOT earlier than we've ever seen him before at the end of last night's episode?

I really like how Jacob and His nameless brother were portrayed in this episode. We've all know Jacob as mysterious and all knowing and flocke as manipulative and evil, but I enjoyed getting to see that Jacob wasn't always all knowing that he basically was just told he had to protect the light. I also liked that no name brother wasn't just an evil force, he was person.
I read someone's thoughts of what happened with the smoke monster on facebook and I thought it sort of made sense. Do you think that Jacob had to protect the light not only because other people wanted to find it, but because it also had evil inside it too? so then maybe when Jacob threw his brother in, the evil force was able to come out using his brother just like what happened to Locke.

Yeah, but I don't think normal 20-somethings (or 30-somethings or whatever the heck age Jacob was in this episode) act so slow and clueless... especially since MiB seemed to be relatively logical and together.
