Hooping ladies: I'd like to get a hoop and start doing it for fun and somewhat for fitness. My question is, what size hoop, and with what weight, do I need? I've only hooped once, and it was a great workout, but I have no idea what the size or weight was.
Any advice for a beginner?
When I picked my first hoop out, the basic rule I went by was to measure the distance from your feet to your waist - and that would be your hoop size. However, I found getting it to spin was a bit of a challenge.
Knowing more now I've learned that it's probably best to start with something a little bit larger than that.
You will find that a larger hoop will get you waist spinning sooner. When you're ready to start more tricks (upper body, hands, etc) you'll probably want something a little bit smaller and lighter. Oh, and don't be afraid if you bruise at first, this is normal.
A large hoop won't be a waste once you get the waist (lol) hooping down, because you'll still use it even after you've progressed to a smaller one. Since larger hoops spin slower it will help you with learning new tricks.
If you really like hooping you'll find that eventually a collection will start growing...
And for reference a standard size hoop is usually 42'
Soooooo a good plan may be to measure the distance, compare it to standard size, then go up a size from whatever size is closest to what you measured. ...Sorry if that's confusing!
for those of you who might be saving money for bonnaroo, dollar general store has hoops for 2$.i know its not the same kind of hoop but they did have different sizes. it could be a starter hoop to see if you like it.
I couldnt find a guy's only thread so here I am. I've been working overtime ever since deciding on Bonnaroo... coz I really dont want to worry about anything out there! Major loser here, I dropped more than a 100pounds in a flash last year and now I'm a fitness nut. Spreading the love is what I'm all about. If anyone wants any supplement, food or exercise tips... I've got your back www.bodybuilding.com is all I ever used but there's a plethora of everything so for more concise info, I'll do my best. I saw a yoga at bonnaroo video on youtube... what's that about?
yes, after my initial successes I got a little sloppy over the holidays with diet, and have had trouble keeping it reasonable. With a mini beach trip in April then Roo in June its time to heat it up again.
I'm doing OK with exercise, although could always do better!

Awesome thread!! With all this wintertime crap, I'm am in dire need of some endorphins to get me out of this funk! I'd like to loose 30lbs or so to get to my ideal weight, but it's no big deal if that doesn't happen by June b/c I've already lost 120 over the last 16mos! At my previous weight Bonnaroo was HARD, the heat seemed to affect (effect?) me more, my feet/ankles were swollen by the 2nd day, and the embarrassment of being so big made me want to be covered up (so not the thing to do in 100+ degrees). Now that I'm in better shape, I can function more like a normal human being and I have endless energy. I guess my question is what can I do with all that energy? I've been banned from hooping in the house, it's too cold to run or do much outside, and I can't afford a gym membership. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Clarity--My husband is buying me one of your hoops on etsy for Valentine's Day! I'm so pumped! Sooooo looks like I'll be hooping, walking, and watching what I eat to get ready for the summer!
It does cost money, and I hope it is not defunct. But it may be worthwhile. We did this at the Cleveland Clinic, and saw tremendous success for participants. It provides accountability and motivation. Even doing just one month is long enough to start good habits and get going! But we could do three months, starting March 1st and that would bring us right up to June!
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Sweet, I've been meaning to dig this thread out and bump it up myself because I definitely need to lose some weight before Bonnaroo.
Today was that first slightly-warmer "oh my god winter DOESN'T last forever" day we've had here - it's just going to go right back to being cold and snowy, but it's nice to get a slightly warmer day and know that if there are more days like this I'll be able to get out and go running.
I downloaded an app on my phone called Cardio Trainer a while back - I haven't gotten to test it out yet because it's been so cold that I haven't gotten myself out running, but it looks pretty cool. It kinda functions as a pedometer while you're running (or whatever) and tracks where you go and how long you run, and then it'll track all your workouts and how many calories you burn and all that. I'm not explaining it terribly well but I think it should be fairly useful. My phone runs Android so if any of you other ladies have Android phones it might be worth checking out. I don't know if the app is available for iPhone too or not, but if not I'm sure there are ten thousand similar apps.
Thanks Pepper! I've got a Droid as well, so I'll be checking that out. Also, there is a C25K (couch to 5k) app for Droid and iPhone that is awesome. It's been pretty grey here (imagine that) but as soon as we get out of monsoon season my butt will be out the door and running. Considering I have a 5k coming up March 13, that better be sooner rather than later.
Clarity - Thanks for Calorie Count! I've been using it since Sunday and have already dropped a lb! I'm one of those obsessive weighers... it's horrible, but it also makes me feel awesome knowing that I've got one down! Side question - do you do hoop convergence or any of the west coast hoop meet-ups?
So I just got back from an awesome hoop class so I'm feeling extra motivated and hyper, but I wanted to share a little snack/lite meal that has been helping me. I make grilled cheeses out of the low cal/high fiber wheat bread (90 cals for 2 slices) and then use a wedge of the light laughing cow cheese (35 cals). I usually add a slice or two of tomato and some garlic and then use the spray butter for the outside of the bread, and Voilà! Healthy grilled cheese!
Also, the Wheat Thins Fiber Selects are less than 10 calories a piece! Woot! I love crackers, but they are usually sooo bad for you. A few crackers, some grapes and more of that laughng cow cheese (that stuff is the BEST!) and you've got a great snack.
I'm a compulsive weigher as well. And I've found that if I weigh myself every day, I can maintain or lose. If I don't weigh myself for several weeks, I'll step on and will have gained. Knowing that I have to look at the scale every morning keeps me accountable to myself!

I joined TOPS in my area and I weigh tonite. I have to go weigh in with people to hold myself accountable . I"m such a child ...Last year's heat is a good incentive to drop this weight for this year's roo.

This is the first time I've seen this thread! I love it! I'm glad I'm not the only one that says "ok I'm going to be in a swim suit most of the time at broo so I need to get in shape." Now we are going to Hangout as well so I have less time. I have been using an app called "lose it" You put in what you would like to weigh and it tells you how many calories you should consume. You log your calorie intake and exercise and weight and it reconfigures everything for you. I make sure i weigh myself on friday and then on monday. It helps me be good for the wekends.

Thanks for bumping this because I really really need to get back on this. Last year I started going to the gym (first time in my life) and loved it. I lost about 10lbs and was really happy but then the holidays, family and winter happened. I gained all the weight back, none of my clothes fit and just cannot get motivated to go back to the gym or even go out and walk.
Help motivate me please before I cancel the gym membership and start starving myself instead of exercising

Dreamingtree, I found it helpful to dig up old pictures of me when I "looked good" in a swim suit and post them on the fridge or the treadmill. The tv is also a good place. It motivated me!

This thread is awesome! What a supportive community. This will be my first year and I've been thinking that I'd like to shed a few before June. I've been working out with kettlebells since the start of the year and I'd recommend them to anybody. I've been a powerlifter and done yoga for years but I hate hate hate cardio... kb's are a nice combo of the two. Plus its fun!

Oh no! I remember when you were doing so well - I loved your FB updates!
Well, you don't wanna starve yourself because then you'll just be cranky and the weight will come back quickly. You want to head to the gym and get walking because when Roo time comes, you'll need that stamina to make it to all the late-nights we'll be dragging you to!

I know Dani, I was doing so well! Then winter happened and I just got unmotivated to ever leave my house..... I am trying though and I know you are right about the stamina - especially at my age I need to be able to keep up !
Hope everyone stayed strong over the long weekend.
Unfortunately, we had ZwickelmaniA (brew fest) on Saturday. Craft brews all day combined with strong cravings for pizza and Mexican = not good for my diet. We did walk most of the tour, so I walked about 5 or 6 miles... but I still managed to drink my weight in beer.
I have hoop class in a little bit though, that should help me get back on track.

I did pretty well this weekend food wise. I also went back to the gym and walked my dogs, so I am off to a good start. I will try to walk or go to the gym after work today!
My motivation is coming back now that I see all my cute clothes for Bonnaroo and none of them fit.....
We went to Austin for the weekend, so I ate way too much good food. But we also walked a ton, so I'm thinking it evens out. Plus, watching my hubby run a marathon got me super motivated to get off my butt! I'm on week 2 of the workout plan and it's going really well so far.
Hello! I've been lurking on the boards since my first Bonnaroo in 2007 and this and the girly fashion thread are two that I have read all the way through... finally signed up to join the conversation.
Before the holidays I was doing bootcamp twice a week, running and going to yoga. I lost a bit of weight but the scale wasn't the best measure of my improvement because of how much muscle I gained. I have never felt so strong! Then December happened and although I'm still going to bootcamp it has been too snowy and slippery to run outside and I gave up on weekend yoga classes in favour of sitting on the couch and drinking wine under a big fluffy blanket.
SO, now that I have my Bonnaroo ticket I am determined to lose 10lbs by June. I'm not going on any crazy diet, just trying to focus on clean eating, smaller portions and less alcohol and lots of exercise. Enough exercise that I won't feel bad when I drink beer and eat pizza on the weekends. I just need to keep my motivation up and reading about all of your goals and amazing work helps a lot!
I was considering Weight Watchers as a way to get the last 10lbs off but I'd rather not spend the money, gonna try my best to do it on my own and see how it goes.

^^ This! I just need to lose about 10lbs or so also and it is really easy to do just by watching portions, calories and adding a little exercise I also must drink less wine!!
I am with you both on being minus 10 lbs before Roo! But cutting down on wine (and beer) is going to be tough, it's just too good!
I managed to drop about 10 a year or so ago by watching calories and working out 4-5 times a week... unfortunately right now, my job keeps me out of town every other week so it's harder to do this when I'm eating out for every meal. What do you guys do to cut calories at restaurants? Any specific places that you find are lower cal overall?
Skip the entrees and order a non-fried appetizer and a house salad. Watch out for entree salads since they often have lots of high-calorie items. Grilled fish is also a good option with just vegetables on the side. I'm always amazed at how delicious it can be.
But I have to say, the best thing I've done to lose weight is to eat 6 times a day. Forcing myself to actually eat breakfast at a normal time. A small snack mid-morning and mid-afternoon so I'm not STARVING at mealtimes and can make a sensible choice. This was such a revelation to me - I had been resisting for years.
When I'm traveling I try have a healthy breakfast that's typical of what I would eat at home so I can start out feeling like I'll have some control over what I'm going to eat for the rest of the day. I don't know that I make the best choices in restaurants (I usually order vegetarian options and have more than once found out later that I ordered something with way more calories than a dish with meat) but I make it my goal not to eat everything on my plate, which is hard for me. I just know that if I eat everything I'll end up too full and feeling bad about myself and I always get more food than I need in a restaurant anyway. I try to stick with whole grain options, veggies on the side (or no side at all if I can't get veggies) and try to evaluate what I do and don't need to eat when I get my food.
I don't always do that when eating out, but when I'm traveling for any period of time I find that I have to so I don't feel gross all the time and end up gaining a lot of weight (which did happen the first time I had a job that involved a lot of travel).
