And I've also cut out just about all alcohol - less for its calorie content than for its ability to make me eat crap. After a few beers, do you really want the grilled fish? Or do you want a burger? For me, it's always the burger. And even worse, the next day I'm always extra hungry - even after a modest number of drinks. So alcohol gets saved for maybe once a month.

Yeah, alcohol and I have a love/hate relationship. I justify my daily wine intake because: 1. it's my job and 2. I LOVE wine, and then hate the scale. I know nothing about this "hate the sin" nonesense...
If I am a bit more than tipsy I get a strong craving for sweet potato fries with sriachi mayo. *droooooool*
But my new craving that really kills me is pork humbow. I love me some sweet, steamy bun goodness loaded with sweet and tangy pork.
There is this sushi place by our favorite date night location that sells the most amazing steamed buns for $1.00!!!! WTF?!?! It's like they want to break any willpower I have left and stomp on it.
We go out, have a nice night and then as we are trekking to the bus stop to head home... BAM! PORK HUMBOW IN YOUR FACE! CHEAP! = *nom nom nom* damn delicious NBC.
*edit* when did we change "love children" to "NBC?" After my post went up I had no clue what happened to my last word... took me a second to figure that one out.
I've made more from the magazine than the website but had a lot of good results, and the Clean Eating pizza dough is my go-to pizza dough recipe that I make at least once a month. You can double or triple it and freeze for later.
One more... this is a food website that my friend created after losing 100lbs that details her new approach to food:

I'm with all of you girls in the lose 10 lbs for Roo camp. That's about what I'm hoping to drop. Should be doable for all of us!
We just got another load of snow dumped on us today....probably close to another foot. Sigh. So much for any hope that winter might be easing up!
So...what are anyone's suggestions for indoor workouts that don't involve me going to a gym that I can't afford? It's like unless it's nice enough out to go running, I can't find a way to work out because I don't know what I can do when I'm stuck inside.

I have a bunch of bootcamp style workouts that you can do at home and that require no special equipment (some you may need 3-5lb weights for). I will try to scan and share them this weekend if you're interested.
Here is a workout you can do indoors, add in some Burpees and you will have a full body workout with cardio. 10 push-ups 10 sit ups 10 squats - 10 rounds. I would suggest doing 5 burpees after each round and it will get you sweating!

Working out at home is great! I almost never go to the actual gym anymore.
This is a great workout, it got me into weight training years ago and I found it fun (and butt kicking!)...its also quick but effective, which I think helps if you're busy: www.stumptuous.com/workout-6
The whole Stumptuous website is pretty awesome for women's fitness, I think. Krista is very inspiring and she has TONS of at-home workout ideas, with little or no equipment!
I also like this simple kettlebell circuit...its a great cardio and weight lifting workout and you can get a 15 or 20lb kettlebell at Target for $30 or so. I do 50 kettlebell swings, 5 grapplers getups, then 40 kettlebell swings, 4 grapplers getups, and on down to 10 swings and 1 getup. One circuit should take you 20-30 mins with rest in between and (they say, anyway) it burns as many calories as running five miles, with better full body muscle involvement.
This is a grappler's getup (that's Krista from Stumptuous):
This is a kettlebell swing (this guy has great how-tos on Youtube, and his form is very good):
Oooh I like the kettleball idea! I might have to go grab one of those tonight. How long do you rest between sets?
Melanie, I used to do a lot of the workout DVDs... I'm the same as you, I'm not too jazzed about leaving the house to go work out. Amy Dixon does a set of DVDs for Women's Health magazine, but you can get the DVDs on Amazon, and they're half cardio and half strength training. And Women's Health usually has a tear out workout routine every issue... I'll dig through some of my old ones and scan them for you if you want.

Yeah I'm thinking some sort of video workout is the way to go - I really don't have money to spend on DVDs right now, but I can probably find some stuff on Youtube or something.
All of that stuff just bores me so much, though. That's why running outside works so much better for me - it's not as repetitive so it's more enjoyable and easier to motivate myself to do. Plus once I start running I can't quit until I get back to my house! ;D

I hope you enjoy it! Even if it doesn't end up being your main exercise, its really fun to mix things up with.
For rest...Depends on how I'm feeling that day But usually 60-90 seconds or so. Your heart rate should come up really fast, so don't feel like you can't rest and let it come down a bit between sets. Another circuit I sometimes do for cardio is 10 kb swings at the top of the minute, then rest for the remainder of the minute, then repeat for 15 mins. It'll really kick yer butt!
One thing I should've said in the original post, for the grapplers getups its 5 each side, then 4 each side, etc... not just 5 then 4. Also, there's some good kb training videos out there but you'll want to avoid the Jillian Michaels one... her form is terrifyingly bad, like you could really hurt yourself. If you're looking for a video you'll want a trainer with RKC (Russian Kettlebell Certified) next to their name.
After reading through this thread with all of the discussion of hooping I just signed up for a 4 week beginners hooping class in April. I've been doing all of these hard bootcamp classes and thinking about gettint into kickboxing but I need something fun that I can look forward to... I'm really excited to start!
I had started with the calorie count plan that I posted earlier, but have kind of gone off on my own, now. The biggest help I've found is that I'm keeping a nutrition journal. I log all of the food I eat every day and my workouts. Then calculate the calorie difference (in-out). It's been great! It's really helped me figure out exactly where my problem areas are and fix them. Plus, you have to really think about what you are doing (or not doing, in my case) when you have to see it on paper every day.

ok... gonna suck it up here, and try to hold myself accountable ;D I quit smoking right before my 30th birthday and then got lazy, so in the last 6 months I've added an extra 20ish pounds... I'm working on having at least 15 gone by June... I'm a stress/bored eater & 60% of my extra weight is around the belly, so it's very easy to pull off the "pregnant" look right now So back to hooping, walking & weights I go... and hoping all the awesome roo clothes I've been collecting over the last couple of months are a helpful part of my motivation, considering i bought them with my "roo weight" in mind

I started the c25k last week - today will be my third run and I'm loving it so far. I was vegan for a number of years, did yoga twice a day - this all helped me lose 50 lbs. Now, I'm married, work requires a lot of travel - about 25-30 weeks a year. Thanks to all of these wonderful changes in my life I've gained 45 of the 50 back. I'm no longer vegan (lacto-ovo pescatarian now) so that doesn't help. I'm doing my best to lose 30+ lbs before Bonnaroo and I'm hoping this thread will help keep me motivated I did jump on the scale a few minutes ago and I'm down 5 lbs since last Sunday That's a start, right?
I was getting kind of down because I've been on this plan for 5 weeks (though I cheated a lot the first couple weeks) and my weight really hasn't changed. It actually went up a 1/2 pound. But I weighed in today and I lost 2.5 lbs this week! So, stick with it through the plateaus. Weight loss will come!
Friendly reminder (because I have to remind myself this all the time): if youre working out you may not lose weight at all. Muscle weighs more then fat. You should measure progress by the way your clothes fit not the number on the scale.

Both of these!
I have to remind myself of these two things all the time!
I've been down on myself the past few days because of the plateaus, feeling mopey, time-of-the-month issues. etc. etc. But then I put on jeans that have always been a little bit baggy and they fell off of me. Woot!
And as I was putting some clothes in the washer this weekend, Ron walked into the laundry room and said, "Wow! I can really tell you are losing weight from the back!"
"... thanks... ?"
These kind of complements always make you feel good, and then you wait a second and it turns into, "I wonder how long I've had a huge ass..."

Definitely seconding this!! Since I started powerlifting regularly again in September I've only lost 15 lbs but I went from a 40" waist to a 34" waist. I find body measurements much more informative and satisfying than the scale.

Well I know I am not a girl but am into fitness so wanted to pop in and see what you girls were talking about. Muscle helps burn fat. Girls worry about getting to big but weightlifting does help with weight loss just try to go for more reps rather than more weight. Also scales lie its all about how you feel if you feel good at 130 and crappy at 120 which would you rather be? Well that is all I have its awesome that you girls are so into all of this.
Yay for all the successes! And thanks for the reminder to measure myself again tonight.
I have a rough estimate number in mind that I'd like get to, but the true test is a pair of jeans stored away in the back of my closet. When those fit easily again, I'll know I've reached my goal.
I'm a giant couch potato, getting over a shattered shoulder, etc but I did my first Zumba on the Wii yesterday. Any advice from Zumba ladies on here?
I did Zumba at a local church this summer ($5/class, or 10 classes for $40 or something like that) and I loved it! I have since moved from Indiana to Austin, but I have a Wii and might get the game. There are a bunch of opportunities for live classes though...just do an online search.
My advice for Zumba is don't just go through the motions, really think about what muscles you are working and holding everything together and firm. It really increases your calorie loss and heart rate!

I as well have started to loose/work out in preparation for Bonnaroo and because I have gained since a knee injury and surgery 3 years ago (Went from a physical job to being a full time student). I live in a cooler dryer climate so I am also using the steam room to prepare for the heat and humidity.
PS. I hope I'm not intruding on your thread.
There's a guys' fitness thread somewhere, but we're pro-men around here!
