Hrm not sure how I just noticed this thread now. Anyways, congrats to all you ladies! It sounds like everyone is on the right path.
I'm just starting my weight loss regimen. Doing what Clarity mentioned in the way of writing down everything I eat, and my exercise. I'm going to way of jogging to start. I haven't jogged in over a year since moving home. I've gone from a size 10/12 to a 16/18 in a year. It's amazing the effect stress and grief have on a body...

I've lost 21 lbs this year so far. Trying to lose 50 lbs by bonnaroo. In the past I've been miserable during bonnaroo due to my weight. And my boyfriend and I always take pics under the arch together and I am huge. I want the pic this year to be awesome! I could lose over 100 lbs so its gonna be a long journey. Good luck to everyone. I'll definitely post before and after shots this year.
So I'm taking Pilates for a required credit at school. What should I expect? Figured this would be the best place to ask.
I'm sure someone with more experience can say better, but honestly, the few classes I took? Kicked my ever-lovin ass. And I was training pretty hard at the time. I think I expected yoga? Its not yoga!
Best thing I can compare my (very limited) Pilates experience to, is if you've ever done 'super slow' sets in weight training. Lots of slow, muscular movements, lots of bodyweight work, and tons of balance challenge. I personally found it hard on my joints so I didn't continue but its VERY interesting work.
Do you like torture? Then you will like pilates. Really though, it's not that bad, but it's definitely a lot of slow movement and holding positions like mizvalentine said. And you will hurt afterwards (in a potentially good way).
Not gonna lie, I'm kinda jealous that pilates counts as course credit for you...
Hello girls! So happy to see this thread. My New Years resolution was to become vegetarian and doing so has helped me shed 7 pounds to date. I'm trying to up my game though because I'm wanting to lose 15-20 more pounds by Bonnaroo. I'm happy to know I'm not the only one needing/wanting to lose weight!!! Good luck to all!
And while I'm at it, completely off subject - but to all the hoopers in here, if I was wanting to start out, would I just buy a normal hoop from WalMart/KMart, or do I need to purchase one online from a hooping store?

Nooooo! You need a real, adult hoop! The ones from Walmart are made for kids and are way to light for an adult. An adult hoop is bigger and heavier, so it is easier to keep up and keep moving. You'll get a way better work out because you will be able to actually keep it going and working for a long time. I've been an avid hooper for 3 years now, and I can barely keep one of those kid ones up.

That's good to hear! I tried one of those kid hoops a couple of weeks ago and thought I lost my skills!

love the thread ladies! keep up the great work. i recently started a 90 day fitness challenge, not so much to loose weight but just to improve overall strength. day one, vom... its been progressively getting better though. i was lifting a rather large patient at work a few weeks ago and my lack of up body strength was annoying. i was 4 sport athlete through college and I'm turning 30 this year, i need to get my a game back!
I have lost 25 lbs and 2 dress sizes since last summer. I began last summer with lots of swimming laps and walking/hiking, and joined a gym in late fall. I now go to the gym 4-5 x a week and mix in some hiking some days. Can't wait to get the pool open again.
I seem to be stuck where I am as far as progress, though. I can't really afford a personal trainer...I know that part of what I need to do is eat better...although I've made a lot of improvements I have a long way to go. I work irregular hours and also seem to work out stress best with eating...both handicaps.
I would love to try hooping...did it as a kid...tried it a year or so ago before losing the weight and I couldn't keep the thing up more than a few seconds. But I already see huge differences in my endurance after my months on my journey.
I'm really aiming for this to be a lifestyle change. As clothes get too big I discard them or go to goodwill. In the past I had several different sizes in my closet to go back and forth....no more.
the recent weather has made exercising awesome. Friday spent 3 hours playing basketball. Saturday attended a softball clinic and Sunday spent the day with my daughter at the batting cages. so much easier to exercise when its nice out. But alas its supposed to snow here thursday.

Keep up the awesome work everyone! My wife and I are doing Weight Watchers and I just said ^^this to her yesterday. I have lost 18lbs since the middle of January and my goal is 82 more by the end of the year. I don't want the option of being able to gain 5lbs back. Hoping to drop 20 more before Roo! It would be easier to drag my a$$ around the farm in the TN heat!

I went to the gym today for the first time in a few weeks. I've been badly slacking, but I have to be skinny for my sister's wedding and trip to wales in 7 weeks and of course for Roo..... For dinner was fresh haddock and steamed veggies I'm getting there.....

Ughhh, I wish I was able to motivate myself to get out. I use to run on average around 15-25 miles a week, but I've barely been going the last month or two.. And I have a serious full-blown addiction to ice cream. I know I'm not fat, but I'd really like to tighten up the belly area and have the endurance to be walking around/standing for the four days at roo. Anyone have some inspiring words or advice to get me going?

You can do it! I hear ya with the ice cream though..except I love cookies more than anything! Try reading some user stories on livestrong.com or similar sites to get you motivated. One of the healthy living blogs I read actually had a post on exercise mantras. Maybe they'll help too! www.pbfingers.com/2011/01/19/exercise-mantras/
I expect it to be very interesting haha. I'll probably be the only guy in the class.
I took some Pilates classes one summer when I started MMA training to tighten up my core. I thought I was in fair shape before but it hits your abs and some and good. Expect pain after the first few classes or even weeks. I was also the only guy in the class but to be honest I didnt mind it was very nice.

I've never heard of the Paleo diet either. I've noticed that since I've amped up my workouts I have soooo much more energy and I'm not even tired at work (and sitting at a desk all day bores me to tears, which in turn makes me tired), and don't need caffeine to stay awake! I've also cut way down on meat consumption and added a second yoga class per week to my weekly regimen. Seems like everyone's doing really well to get healthy for Roo and for life!
I was at my sister's house this past weekend helping her with an upcoming move when I found a pic of me right after high school (about ten years ago), in a bikini on the beach with no fat anywhere! I have been sulking all week. THEN I saw this thread and started reading your posts and not to sound totally cheesy but I do feel inspired! So just wanted to say thanks ladies and everyone keep up the good work!
I've been in a slump the last couple of weeks. I haven't been working out, and am only half eating right. Because of that, I'm tired, so I can't get motivated to get up and start up the routine again. BUT my hubby just got p90x, so I'm determined to start that on Monday.
ps for those of you are obsessed with ice cream, try the skinny cow products. They are delicious!

Good luck the the P90X....its killer if you can stick with it. Those are the workouts I use on my non-cardio days.
And I second the skinny cow. I jsut bought my first box Tuesday and they are delicious!

Me and my guy just got over some terrible, debilitating stomach virus that's kept me from working out all but twice in almost two weeks... terrible!! We just couldn't get out of bed though, it was really something. But we're finally recovered and I'm back at it tomorrow, hell or high water. I'm just gonna go ahead and not think about how much strength I've lost in my lifts... or how sore I'm gonna be this weekend!
Sorry you were sick! That's no fun. Great attitude getting back into the swing of things
So I've noticed my right side (arms and legs) is more defined than my left, even though I work them out evenly. I'm not super ripped or anything, so it's not noticeable to others, but is this something I should worry about? Should I use a heavier weight on my left side? Or is this normal since I'm right handed?

Totally normal. Are you working with barbells or dumbbells? If you're using barbells it can exacerbate the difference because your strong side will pick up the slack for the weak side. If you switch you dumbbells you won't have that problem. Also, they say work your weak side first and only do as many reps on your strong side as your weak side can handle. That'll give your weak side a chance to catch up.
For lower body, you can try doing exercises that work one leg at a time (lunges, one-legged calf extensions, one legged leg press) with the same idea of letting the weak side catch up. Maybe try some split lifts too (if you google there's some good how-tos for form)... I don't do these because I'm missing my ACLs in my knees but if you're healthy it could help.
My chiropractor had me do some strength test to see if my core was getting out of balance from hooping predominantly to one side, and IT IS! So, for all you hoopers out there, the moral of the story is, hoop both ways!
I finally have got back into the habit of going to the gym 2-3 times a week (after months of procrastination!), and I've lost 3 lbs
yay!!
I just started doing 3 days of cardio at the gym in addition to my 3 normal days of weights at home and I think the cardio was finally the missing piece to get over the plateau. Ive lost 3 lbs as well!

Damn, good for you!! I'm looking forward to the weather getting decent so I can walk a few miles to work every day in addition to lifting 3x week. It makes SUCH a difference.
