I'll throw my 2 cents in
This seems to be a sensitive topic, almost like a raw nerve was hit at the thought of Phish playing 'roo.
First, some of the same people i've talked to who say there's no way (logistics, cost or otherwise) Phish can/will play bonnaroo were strong believers in LZ or Floyd playing. It seems to be a double standard.
I firmly believe that there's a way for any band to play under the right circumstances.
As already mentioned: - Phish is not in it for the money - Existing relationship with ac/superfly - Already on tour, could still schedule own festival - Ease of organization with top notch festival - Economy is tight and this would help superfly turn the dial on previous 'roos (cough lez zeppelin cough)
I kinda feel that people who are sure Phish will not play are (for the most part) either (1) super fans who don't want their band playing as part of a larger festival (maybe shorter sets, mixed scene not dedicated to all this phish) or (2) are not fans of Phish and just don't want the hype and the phish crowd crashing the party.
Me, i'm not a fan...well I know like 10 songs..cavern, wilson, waste, wading in the velvet sea etc etc. I am all for ac/superfly mixing it up. Bring the boys to the farm and I can see my first Phish show. If i get bored (which will probably not happen), I would still have 150 other bands to check out.

Honestly I could care less if they are or aren't at Bonnaroo this year. Yes, I would love it. It would be amazing, one of the single greatest weekends of my life. But if they aren't there....well okay, it's not like Bonnaroo is gonna be a giant pile of sh*t. They continue to bring it, year after year. I know alot of you don't agree with that, but that's your opinion, and you are entitled to it. And to think Superfly "Couldn't handle Phish"? I'm pretty sure the biggest/best run festival on this continent, has the logistical know-how to make it happen. I honestly don't believe there is a single band that is "too big" for the farm. Yeah, tickets might sell out quicker, and be out of reach for some. But, going back to all the Led Zep bullsh*t from early last year, the biggest point to be made is about how many people are truly willing to "do Bonnaroo" We all know it's a lot to deal with, and a good 75-80% of music fans aren't as hardcore about music, that they would travel for umpteen hours just to go to a fest. Let alone to camp in a field, in 100 degree weather, and be out of their "comfort zone". This country is too damn lazy. Smite if you wish, but some of the comments in this thread are comedic, and I had to add my 2 cents.

I think we can all agree that Bonnaroo is the only festival in the country that has any chance of getting phish to play a festival if phish doesn't do their own phestival.
Strongly disagree. Let me prefis this with saying I do not believe Phish will play any festival. BUT if they did one, Roo would not be it. The members of Phish are personal, long time friends with the man in charge of booking for Rothbury. Trey pushed to have Rothbury be his first performance back, and 3 of the 4 played there together. Not Bonnaroo. So, if they were to play a festival (which I don't think they would) it would be Rothbury.
Plus, (sorry to open up this can of worms again), after the shit Roo pulled on Phil this past year, I would be extremely dissappointed if Phish played there just out of principle
1. Where did you get this? 2. There are a lot of festivals on there (hence why I don't believe it) 3. Clearly you've never been to the Newport in Columbus. It only holds a couple thous people (and thats rounding up). I highly doubt they would play there - though I friggin love that venue 4. Hookahville? Really? - again, hence why this "schedule" is a joke
Sorry for being so harsh, but come on. Let's hold onto a little bit of reality here
edit the posted "schedule" I'm referencing was delete-hence why this post no longer makes sense
edit: ok sorry about that, apparently camp bisco had to cancel, apparently some permit issues or something, the venue wanted nothing to do with it. this is all still pretty tenative anyway, but so far it looking like this. i'll let you guys know when everything becomes official.

Interesting (and depressing) point. But if that is the case, could Rothbury possibly handle a band/show as popular as Phish? As many have pointed out, even the Bonnaroo attendance might be pushed up, and Rothbury's capacity is nowhere near as big as the farm, correct?
I agree with those that think Phish might do their own thing this year. Maybe Roo 2010, when their comeback is less big news.

Rothbury is expanding their capacity for 2009, and could definately expand further if they wanted. But, like I said, I really don't think Phish will do a fest, so I don't think that is an issue

Let's look at it from the perspective of Superfly/AC. Here they are, putting together next year's festival, and they get word that Phish is reuniting and touring next spring/summer. They know their core demographic greatly overlaps with Phish's core demographic. They know it will end up being one of, if not the, biggest tours of the summer. And they are on very friendly terms with all members of the band. Add to this, they of course are looking to top themselves every year, and if it is true that they sold significantly under this year (I think 65K was mentioned), they especially have it out to reclaim their status as THE American summer music festival. I guess all I really want to prove is that the powers behind Bonnaroo most certainly want Phish there, regardless of whether it may be the best decision. In fact, they may even be aware that it may not be the best decision, but still feel as though the must try to book them because they would look impotent and unimportant to outsiders if this huge festival with jam roots wasn't able to book the preeminent jamband. You can bet your ass they are at least trying to get Phish there... so how likely do you think they are to succeed?
"3. Clearly you've never been to the Newport in Columbus. It only holds a couple thous people (and thats rounding up). I highly doubt they would play there - though I friggin love that venue"
the band wants to return to their roots in some more intimate settings, hence a lot of the smaller festivals and venues
^^^lol YESS^^^ and nol...are u sure u need to be posting in this thread....i mean theres no rumors anymore
i dunno, streetbum i think you may have a point, this Friday morning, I got together with Mike, Page and Fish to talk openly about the strong feelings I've been having that Phish rumors have run their course and that I should end it now while it's still on a high note. Once we started talking, it quickly became apparent that the other guys' feelings, while not all the same as mine, were similar in many ways -- most importantly, that we all love and respect Phish rumors and the Phish rumor audience far too much to stand by and allow these rumors to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. I don't want to become a caricature of myself, or worse yet, a nostalgia act. By the end of the meeting, I realized that after almost three years on inforoo I was faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as an inforooster, united in my friendship and my feelings of gratitude.
So this lineup will be the final Phish rumor. I am proud and thrilled that it was in our home state of Tennesse. I'm also excited for the June and August shows, our most recent tour together. For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like the hiatus, which was my last attempt to revitalize myself. I'm done. It's been an amazing and incredible journey. I thank you all for the love and support that you've shown me.

This would make sense except I believe the Verizon Ampitheater (formerly Deer Creek) in Noblesville, IN is being torn down/no longer used. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

No, I believe what you heard was that PHISH is going to be tearing the place down

last i heard it is up for sale, but its not yet sold and is still being used for at least a little bit longer. hopefully the comeback should give them some extra financial incentives to keep going
I, for one, had never even thought of Rothbury as an option but you make it make sense
For the record, I too agree it's not likely they do a festie but they damn sure are gonna be asked to more than once
Well thanks. And I agree. I have no doubt that everyone is going to try to get Phish at their fest. I just doubt they will say yes
Sorry I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything. I think you make some terrific points. But here's where I disagree. I think there are in fact very few festivals right now that could actually sustain a Phish headliner (Waka, Allgood, 10KL still too small) and would even want to (not of interest to Coachella, SXSW, Virgin... maybe Lolla). Rothbury is an excellent suggestion. They had an amazingly successful first year, and are sure to grow by leaps and bounds. But still, they are a smaller fest than Bonnaroo and can only grow so much from year to year. I think that if Phish were to continue their tour through 2010, Rothbury would be ready to host them then. 2009 is just a tad too soon. And if I can add to my original post, let's again think about it from Superfly/AC's perspective. How would they look if an upstart like Rothbury booked the biggest jamband AND biggest reunion act and Bonnaroo didn't? I think they'd do everything in their power to get Phish there because of all it would do for them, and for all it would do to them if they didn't. They have been known to pull out stops and change the rules of their fest to accommodate artists (I hesitate to say the K-word), and so I think it's even difficult for us fans to even imagine what they might do to get Phish on board, so it makes it seem less likely than it probably is.
