so i remember lots of people were pretty shocked to learn there would be several metal bands at roo in 2008. despite the uneasy feeling from some, the metalheads i met at roo this year were mostly very friendly people that seemed to be there for the same reason anyone goes to bonnaroo... to let loose and see great live music.
so i was wondering if we the people of inforoo think that the metal factor at bonnaroo was a one time experiment thing or if there will continue to be several metal acts every year.. possibly expanding year after year. i mean i think it would be an a-hole move on AC/superfly's part to just abandon the metal factor next year after lots of metal lovers had a great time this year wanting to return. if you think metal bands will be a continuous trend what metal bands do you think will/should play? do you think there will be another metal headliner or subheadliner?

Interesting question. The metal bands on the undercard last year were likely booked to help attract the Metallica audience to the festival. I wonder if bands like Mastodon would have been on the bill had Metallica not been headlining. That being said, the experiment in metal did not produce very good ticket sales. Bonnaroo was Metallica's first US tour date in a long while, and the only US show on their schedule for the entire first half of 2008. Yet, the festival had one of its worst years for ticket sales ever. So, the adventure in metal might not have been a profitable one - and we all know Superfly likes profits.
I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "metal" bands at 'roo thing. I'm very picky about my metal. I hate Metallica, but I love bands like AC/DC, Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, etc. That being said, I only met one friendly/cool "metalhead" last year. I did, however, meet a lot of Kanye "metalheads" and several people who were rather rude or poor audience members. I don't mean to generalize, or stereotype, or anything. I know that metal fans come in all shapes and sizes, but the "metalhead" type people I met last year were mostly uncool - which is disappointing. I had a number of friends at college who were all self-proclaimed metalheads, and they were the chillest, most easy to get along with guys ever. Very much unlike the ones I encountered on the farm.
there's a lot of decent metal fans out there. What sets them apart from the metal meatheads is their ability to appreciate other music. They understand that every song doesn't need to be at breakneck speed and louder than hell with some fat dude screaming into a microphone. They can also laugh at the Spinal Tap-esque aspects of the genre. I'm not a fan of the Sword's music, but after seeing the interview they did on Fuse from Bonnaroo, those guys are a-ok in my books (then again, any Melvins fan is). Overall, these types of metal fans are simply music fans, and that's the best way to be. The metal fans that annoy me are the one's who only listen to heavy metal and just write off everything else as crap. It's not just metal fans, I guess. You can find people like that for any genre of music.
But as for heavy bands for '09.
John Garcia is putting out Garcia vs Garcia in 09, I believe. That would be pretty wicked. All of his post-Kyuss bands have been pretty awesome.
There's a super heavy blues band out of Austin, TX called Grady that puts on an amazing show. They'd go over well, I think.
I've heard that Jesus Lizard are getting back together. I'd love to see them. It's possible that they're just playing the one show (and in that case, I need to get my ass to Chicago).
Queens of the Stone Age are recording a new album. I have no clue when it's supposed to be released, though.

I would love to see some heavy bands again this year. I loved The Swords show last year. I'm really hoping that Clutch is back again in 09, though they aren't really as heavy as they used to be.
I stumbled upon The Sword's show last year and was absolutely blown away. Their CDs nowhere match the intensity of their live show. As for 2009, I wouldn't mind seeing a few Hard Rock/Metal acts mixed in. For me the shows are more enjoyable at night as it is hard for me to really get into a metal act if the sun is still shining outside the tent. I know that sounds weird....
Baroness is one group that I think would work for a Thursday night slot.

I don't know if any one has heard of Opeth but they would be a great fit for Roo. You all should check them out if you haven't heard them. Also I would love to see Skindred there, a reggae metal band from England.
I haven't seen Down mentioned, but I think they would be great too.
Well, before Trent's announcement of laying low for awhile after these dates, I was guessing that NIN was the most logical next step in the Friday night headliner slot... however, I'm not so sure.
I've got a sinking suspicion that Friday night this year will belong to the Rap/Hip Hop genre...
But I'm sure harder rock music is still gonna be at the farm, it's almost a given. Not sure on what metal band would be relevant enough for Roo besides what we've gotten so far and the names I've listed before.
Queens of The Stone Age would fit incredibly well. Rage... I'd love to see it but I've got to say it seems pretty unlikely. And a little risky, if you ask me (safety). Clutch had a great turn out a few years back... Faith No More has been rumored to be getting back together, right? Barely metal, but definitely hard-ass rock music... I'd love it.
Other "harder" bands that could make it: Aphex Twin (yes, I'd call it hard) Mars Volta could always come back. Primus would always be welcome, I'm sure.

I wouldn't rule out NIN yet....Trent said they would be performing NOT the totally awesome OMG!! light show that they've been touring with so far...but did leave the door open for some toned down sets for some undetermined time....
And as for Rage...I don't think you would see the crap like at Lolly at Roo....I think it would be more like they had at VooDoo in 2007....just a nice High Energy...but not violent....crowd. That crap at Lolly...eh....that was just cause the crowds in general at Lolly were AWFUL!! I was up on the Hill for Rage and had a GREAT time...no issues...didn't even KNOW about the crap till I read it in the paper on Monday....
I'd be good with all the others though...would LOVE to see Mars Volta at Roo...they kicked total arse at VooDoo! ;D

I've seen two Rage shows. Coachella was pretty damn rough. But there were a lot of fratboy types around, which usually leads to some stupid mosh pits. The show they played at Alpine Valley had a rowdy, but respectful crowd from what I saw. Part of it probably had to do with the rain and the fact that the entire hill turned into a mudslide (some good videos on Youtube) so people couldn't really mosh, even if they wanted to.
I think Rage @ 'Roo would be more like the Alpine Valley show. I'd definitely like to see it.
Having never been to Coach don't want to say for sure...but I would imagine the crowds being more Lolly-like than Roo/VooDoo like. Sounds like Alpine Valley and VooDoo were similar...High Energy, moshing def happened at VooDoo...but it wasn't the OMG!! trash everyone and don't give a F*ck thing...they did it more like fun and helped everyone out....I saw one girl get smashed against the rail while WAITING...but after they started....it was just BALLS of ENERGY...nothing violent...just everyone enjoying the show and really into it...which if you've ever listened to/experienced RATM....it's GONNA get you fired up! ;D I dare ANYONE not to get jumping/fist pumping etc at a Rage show!

definitely.
At Alpine Valley, people were sticking around to help people climb up the hill after the show. You seriously needed someone to pull you up it was so muddy. That just wouldn't happen with a Coachella type of crowd.
Yes....definitely sounds like Alpine was more like what I would expect from a Roo crowd...and what I witnessed at VooDoo....Coach and Lolly sound like they have a similar vibe...it's more about the "being there and being seen" than about the music Ick....don't know that I will go back to Lolly even though I LOVE Chicago and they usually have a kick arse lineup....and been thinking of doing Coach sometime...but if the crowds are like Lolly...nah....

having been to both a few times, they really are very different festivals, but each special and cool in their own way .... i think coachella is about new music, groups you have never heard of or seen, where the roo is about the best musicians in whatever incarnation, and you may have seen them a lot of times .... coachella is a younger crowd, which has its good and bad sides ... i think they tend to have more money, dress nicer, and not as kicked back ... there are a lot more druz at the roo, which again people would say is really cool, or really bad ..... coachella is about new times, the internet, iphones, being up to date with the world .... the roo is more about family and sticking together .... i would defend either crowds because i have friends in both places ... diversity is the best .... cr****
hey someone gave me a karma point since yesterday ..tnx ...

The only reason coachella was as wild as it was is because at the time Rage claimed it was a 1-time show reunion, it was the first concert in over 7 years so people were hyped on it. Coachella is pretty calm other than that, last year their headliners were Prince, Portishead, Fatboy slim and Roger Waters... cant expect to much crazyness out of that

American Head Charge would be a great (IMO) metal band for Bonnaroo, they have said in past interviews they want to play festivals with more variety instead of their typical metal shows. (favorite band)
Mastodon is due to release their next magnum opus in early 2009 (and yes, I'm aware that the very definition of "magnum opus" means that there cannot be more than one for any one given party. I don't care. Mastodon could do it, because they rule.) They should be back at the farm, because they're better than everyone else.
As much as I'd love to see Mastodon this year, they're going to be in Finland with Metallica for the 14th and 15th of June... so it's highly unlikely.
