just shows how stupid radio is. The only comment I heard on the radio this morning on a major market alt rock station here in Atl about Coachella was reviewing Pat O'Brien's clothing choices.... also just shows why I will never be famous.

The consensus seems to be that Public Image Limited was hands down the best set of the weekend, followed by Muse and Thom Yorke. Deadmau5 had stunning visuals, supposedly the coolest looking thing at Coachella since the Daft Punk pyramid (nothing will ever top that.)
Hopefully the Gorillaz made up for all the hassles.

Massive attack I like, Daft Punk I do not care for much, Sigur Ros is boring to me, and I have never heard of Mogwai except on this board. If they play after midnight do they change their name to Gremlins? I like plenty of electric music, I just think most of the big names like Daft Punk etc... all sound the same.
Also since Bonnaroo that year had Oyterhead for one of their 15 total shows in 10 years, plus a very rare Dr John night tripper set, plus a unbelievable Radiohead show, plus an epic Tom Petty set, I am guessing you do not really know anything at all about Rock and Roll.

Hours after capping off what appeared to be another successful edition (our report is coming soon!), the Coachella Music Festival has something else to smile about. As the Los Angeles Times reports, the Indio, California based festival has renewed the lease on its current home, the Empire Polo Grounds, “for at least an additional decade.” What’s more, the owner of the grounds will be committing $1.0 million in landscaping improvements annually going forward. Now, if we could only fix that volcano problem.

I went to both Bonnaroo and Coachella last year. Roo was a great but Coachella had My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Paul McCartney, Chemical Brothers (kinda), Throbbing Gristle, Leonard Cohen, Beirut, Superchunk, Crystal Method, Brian Jonestown Massacre, yea it was better than Bonnaroo.
Cohen is great, giving him 45 minutes is criminal, other than that Coachella got pretty much owned lineup wise. Same thing for 06, when Bonnaroo had Radiohead, RRFB, Oysterhead, Dr John etc.., and they had Depeche Mode, and Tool.
It's the 60's, 70's or 80's either you dumbfuck. The two that "matter" for you are from then. The Crystal Method are as good now as they've ever been, still in the prime of their careers. Them and The Chemical Brothers are consistently great live. I don't know why I'm bothering talking to someone with a Kiss signature.
Ahhh the Crystal Method and their number one hit..... The Theme from "Bones".

Sorry, I'm not a regular on this board or in general but I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in but yeah it seems as if everyone wasn't happy about Gorillaz set, mostly like they ended it horribly and it was just a disappointment to watch. I saw a video and they looked and sounded pretty good but that's just me.
I saw the LCD Soundsystem set through the broadcast and damn, I'm getting more excited for them at Bonnaroo!

I'm with you on both counts. I though Gorillaz looked pretty good, and LCD was awesome. I'm dreading the LN conflicts on the Farm. . .

Dude, seriously? Were we all watching the same Gorillaz show? I thought it was amazing. Sure it ended awkwardly but damn: De La Soul, Little Boots, and The Clash collaborations? Sweet. Then again, I'm a huge fan of graphic novels, comics and anime so I really enjoyed the art and graphics video component of the show. To each their own I guess.

Hahaha ... if you only had any idea what the expectations were for this show. The"art and graphics video component" was their old music videos being played on screens with very basic lighting. Besides Paul messing up a few times nobody is complaining about the music. The production was just a massive letdown. Admittedly this was mostly due to huge Gorillaz fans on the Coachella board hyping this up like crazy but Damon himself also alluded to it being something really special. Everyone was expecting this to be as sophisticated as Daft Punk. Sadly what Plastikman and Deadmau5 did at this festival was miles more impressive visually. Also Coachella has ended on a very high note with Rage/Waters/Cure the past few years, and they gave them a ridiculously long time to set up while closing down all of the stages too (which they've never done before.) Regardless of the hype, everyone is saying that it just didn't feel like a sunday headlining set at all.
I thought the Gorillaz were good, nothing too amazing, and it looks like they've stepped out of their avatars. Maybe their show was their way of wanting to be taken seriously as a band or something. The festival overall was a blast. One thing I really liked about it was the water refill system they had with the souvenir water bottles and unlimited refills. The water tasted great all weekend and it was always really quick no matter how long the line was.
My favorite sets were Local Natives (Absolutely rose to the task and played to a packed and overflowing tent. Was probably my favorite set of the weekend), Muse, LCD Soundsystem, Fever Ray, Portugal. The Man, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, Phoenix (top 3, the crowd was huge and freaking out), Thom Yorke, Jonsi (WOW), Mayer Hawthorne, Dirty Projectors, and Old Crow Medicine Show.
- Wonderful weekend of music and overall experience. I had a bit of a different time than many others as I was not camping and relied on shuttle service to and from the venue from my hotel each day, so the logistics of coming and going were quite easy for me. Sounds like camping was a complete mess though.
- However, logistics once inside were still not great compared to Bonnaroo. Beer gardens are just stupid and annoying. Too many restrictions overall at Coachella. And too many people for that amount of space.
Now for the good stuff. Incredible music and scenery all weekend. My goods and bads below:
1. Muse - Killed it. Loud. Awesome. Nuff said.
2. Deadmau5 - Split-open rubix cube set up is indeed the coolest stage design since Daft Punk's pyramid. He will own Saturday night at Roo this year (after Jay Z of course, who I skipped and saved for Roo)
3. Thom Yorke - huge Radiohead fan, so I may be a bit biased, but I thought he was great and his stage design was also very sweet and original.
4. LCD Soundsystem - loads of energy, and a great crowd. They definitely needed longer than 50 minutes or whatever they were given. Will be better at Roo.
5. Gorillaz - everyone needs to calm down about their set. I agree it was a tad underwhelming considering the hype that came along with this performance, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.
6. Tiesto - blasted the main stage after Muse and was very fun.
7. Fever Ray - didn't catch the whole set but was a very cool/strange vibe. Glad I got to experience at least a portion of it.
8. Vampire Weekend - surprisingly the first time I have seen them live and they were great. Good crowd.
9. Spoon - not a huge crowd for the main stage but they sounded great.
10. Julian Casablancas - fun show. He threw in a couple Strokes songs in the mix which made it even better.
Disappointments:
1. Jonsi - sounded fine, but just kinda boring. I ended up leaving and watched Spoon in its entirety.
2. Phoenix - maybe more of a disappointment in the size of the crowd (or lack of space for the crowd) but I wasn't really into it and I'm a Phoenix fan.
3. MGMT - I'm over it. Glad they are not coming back to Roo for a third year.
4. Sahara tent - I'm a huge electronic music fan, but it was just too packed in there all weekend to really enjoy yourself to the fullest. I ended up leaving a lot of acts early that I would've typically stayed for just due to the sheer magnitude of the crowd.
5. Coachella attendees - I'll take hippies over hipsters any day of the week. I did meet some cool people, but t was kind of a dickhead crowd.
Overall, I had a very positive experience and would absolutely go back again. The music was incredible. Coachella's lineup definitely suited my tastes better than Roo's, but Roo is top notch when it comes to the overall operation of the weekend. This weekend only made me more excited for Bonnaroo.

Well you were extremely lucky to be able to use the hotel shuttle service. Most of the problems had to do with parking and camping.
One of the coolest things about coachella was how not crowded it always was. You could almost always get right up front for any band you wanted to see without a problem. People always left each other plenty of space so you could dance freely. In general people used to be much more respectful there. SO many people on the coachella board are ranting about this huge change in the crowd. Goldenvoice just seemed to turn their backs on the longtime faithful and said, "Fuck you, we want more money. That's all we care about now. Coachella is over. This is just like any other business now." One of the diehards on their board who went to his 8th coachella or so this year said, "Gone are all the super enthusiastic music geeks, they've been replaced by 15,000 candy raver tweens and hipster assholes." It's a really ugly scene over there.

Agreed. Muse was fucking amazing and Vampire Weekend was great. MGMT was a major disappointment. The Sahara tent was cool but way overcrowded. Pablo Hassan had a good show. It was a great way to start off the festival.
I agree that the crowd sucked too. 75,000 attendees and 73,000 of them must have been hipsters. They were totally rude. I can't believe the amount of garbage that was just tossed on the ground either. Is it really that hard to walk it over to a garbage can people??? Disgusting.
As killer as the music was I don't know if I'll return next year. If I do though I'm gonna make up a bunch of shirts to take with me and give out to people that say: "That's SO Lot 7." LOL.

your're right about the beauty of coachella. during that thom yorke set, i think it was during Airbag, i took a second to look away from the stage and over the sea of people - looking at the illuminated palm trees, the giant origami crane, and spotlights - it was a very tranquil scene. bonnaroo could learn a lesson in style over utility from the folks at goldenvoice.

I don't even know if I can give a full review. One thing I will say, I know I'm 20 blah blah blah, but a lot of the teens in the crowd didn't know how to handle themselves. But as long as you weren't at mgmt, phoenix, passion pit, or vampire weekend you could avoid them. I wished there were some more music geeks there, and talkative people (the people were less friendly than Bonnaroo as a whole it seemed) but there were great crowds at yo la tengo, pavement, whitest boy alive, flying lotus, and thom yorke.
I'll have a bunch of pictures later, but top 5 sets
1. Thom Yorke- hands down, one of the best sets I've ever seen 2. Flying Lotus- Super enthusiastic, was so happy to be there 3. Gorillaz- Too much hype, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the set 4. LCD Soundsystem- was great to see them on the big stage, definitely needed more time, I hope they play for 2 hours at Bonnaroo 5. Pavement- Super chill crowd (everyone was at Phoenix) and it was great to see one of my favorite bands play live 6. Jonsi- great, but short set 7. Hot Chip- Really fucking fun set
If the lineup is great again i'd go again, and I think the crowds will get better. They're not going to book mgmt, vampire weekend, tiesto, and passion pit every year.
Wow, I haven't heard anything good about Coachella yet this year. I know Idio went, I'll have to see what his thoughts are.
im planning on writing a somewhat detailed review of the whole experience - for my own sake and also because it might be interesting for you guys.
i can tell you now that the line getting in was redic - took us over 3 hours to drive a mile on friday. then it took 2.5 more hours to leave that night.
for a festie that has been produced for so long, they seem to have no idea how to properly manage logistics. it was very surprising.

LOL. Yeah, Lot 7 deserves its own admission ticket. Or they should give everyone there some sort of souvenir: "I survived Lot 7." I haven't done BFE at Roo but I image the experience is similar.
I totally agree about the crowd though. People just weren't very friendly at this festival. The negative vibe killed some of the experience for me. Even in camping people just sort of kept to themselves and didn't interact or gave you strange/dirty looks when you tried to socialize with them. I managed to talk to a few social people and they all said the same thing: They were totally disappointed in the Roo lineup this year and decided to do Coachella instead or they got effed with Rothbury got cancelled and decided to do Coachella instead. There was a large Michigan (Rothbury orphan) crowd and they were awesome friendly.
Oh and Hot Chip was totally sweet. I wasn't expecting much from their show but was pleasantly surprised.
