cornquacker, i want to thank you - fever ray was AMAZING - and i would have missed it if it weren't for your suggestion.
Sure thing. Check out The Knife material now. It's all even better than the Fever Ray album. Silent Shout is a great place to start.
I'm glad you guys were still able to enjoy despite the ridiculous greediness of GV with overselling the hell out of this. If haven't already, check out the coachella boards. There's so many long time devotees that are super pissed off, even enraged. It's going to take a public apology and a commitment to sell 15,000 less tickets to get the formerly faithful fans back next year. One good thing is that GV is finally getting some really bad press about this so now they can't just deny that they did anything wrong.

I guess I'm used to Bonnaroo and thought the crowd was even a little sparse. Seriously the campgrounds were cleaner, I had an easier time getting close to the stage if I could get there at least 20 minutes before the set started, and on Saturday and Sunday there was no line to get into the festival. I have no idea what it was like before hand, but for me it really wasn't that difficult to get around the festival.
nodepression, im with you on that one - i didnt think it was that bad, crowd wise. maybe i was at the shows no one cared about?
but even for thom yorke, i went from the baaaaaaaaack, to fairly close just by walking down the side and cutting into the crowd. and it wasnt like i was being an a-hole, there was ample room. because i had to dance to that... and not the hippy shuffle, but a full blown freakout
to the guy who shouted "one million more songs" - hell yes.
i agree that the tents were jammed, your best bet was viewing from one of the side entrances if you showed up late.
cq - i plan on it. it's a shame she doesnt tour more, it was very captivating. lasers, lamps, and satan
the people i met were generally friendly - although everyone i talked to about bonnaroo (i was wearing the shirt for 2 of the days) said it was the better festie. i think the coachella boards really hype shit up (kinda like here), but worse, and then if the slightest thing goes wrong, they bitch and moan.
I have no idea what it was like before hand, but for me it really wasn't that difficult to get around the festival.
It was gloriously crowdless for a festival of that magnitude. For example, I was able to walk up really close to Paul McCartney no problem. Not having to deal with the hassle of the ridiculous crowds was one of the best things about Coachella. There's also lots of complaints about the change in the crowd with there being WAY more douchebags this year than ever before. Oh and the art, oh God the art. I've seen the pictures and wow that's so disappointing. The big crane isn't embarassing on it's own or anything but compared to the stuff they used to get it is. They did away with the telsa coils which has everyone scratching their heads. The Do Lab looks like it was a joke. They used to put so much time and effort into that to make it truly special and unique. What happened? "The magic is gone" seems to be the consensus on the coachella board. I can see how your perspective would be totally different considering it was your first one but for the diehards GV really needs to earn their trust back, and for some it's already too late.

I still am somewhat confused how things went so badly in some ways. I was at the 60k Coachella shows and I wouldn't think 15k more would make that much of a difference. So it's early in the summer season, but Coachella gets a black eye to start. All of you that dog the Roo and say how much better Coachella is, should take note of how a real festival is run (I am sort of kidding) cr****
I think people had different experiences. I showed up at about 10 PM on Thursday and yeah, we had to wait a couple of hours to finally get to our campsite, but we were close and in a very convenient spot to the stages. I never really felt like it was too crowded the whole weekend. Am I the only one who thinks it's a good thing that all these bands had huge crowds get to see them play that normally wouldn't? If you wanted to get close to a show it wasn't that hard, you just had to show up a little early and you could get up close. Of course if you wander up to the tent at or after the set start time, you're not going to get in. We just went to the back of the tent to be able to hear everything well, and worked into the cracks as they appeared.
Walking from set to set wasn't a problem at all either, there was never a clusterf*ck like getting from What to Which in between two huge sets. I felt like there was a lot of space to walk, unless of course you're up close for a set. If you were up close chances are you weren't going anywhere until it was over, but isn't that the whole point of getting up close anyways? I don't know, I just didn't really have any of these problems I'm reading about, but maybe I'm one in the few. I had a blast and I thought it was set up well logistically from all of my experience. We went into the stage area at like 11:30 every day and didn't have to wait in line for more than 10 minutes...

LOVED IT! Had a fantastic weekend. I like that they transitioned from a day festival to a camp oriented festie, the stage in the campsite was amazing.
That being said, the logistics were fucked. They should've just sent 10 people to Roo to take notes and they could've avoided alot. Beer gardens are stupid and I still don't understand the point. No water available except the $2 bottles for sale, insane, if you ran out of money you either died of dehydration or left the show, period. The line getting in was super long and crazy, but nothing compared to waiting to get into Roo (I know Roo is bigger and everyone is arriving at once so that's NOT a knock on Roo).
Crazy story - Posted on here before I left that the camping sold out (?) so I had to pay $300 for a $50 pass. After waiting for 4 hours (and flying from Minneapolis to get there) we got to the front and realized that our pass was a fake. After talking to three different "managers" one eventually painted a 7 on our windshield to distinguish us from the car camping cars and told us to take a left.
Here's where the shitty logistics worked in our favor. After taking said left we basically ran into a dead end and some dude screamed at us to "turn around a$$hole". We did, and the guys running the line waved us through. OK. So we ended up getting into the car camping site even though our pass was fake. I saw multiple others with "7" on their windshields so it makes sense that they ran out of spots. Counterfitting was crazy prevolent from what I gathered from others.

Top Sets of the Weekend (quick overview):
Thom Yorke/Atoms for Peace - Amazing. Funky. Bass. Angelic. Radiohead California style.
Dead Weather - Face melting doesn't even begin to describe it. Seems like Jack is singing more on the new stuff. I want to marry Allison.
MUSE - So loud and full of panic. These guys are gigantic.
Pretty Lights - "Certified" as my favorite DJ.
Tiesto - Not a huge fan of his music but had so much fun at this show. People were going ape sheet.
MGMT - I was totally over them. Saw them 5 times in two years and wasn't impressed anymore. They killed it on the new stuff though. They are getting better and better with every show and the new material proves this.
Dissapointments:
Sly Stone - Didn't even show up. He can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Sadly this didn't suprise me.
Jay Z - He just sucks. This didn't suprise me either.
Gorillaz - Thought the stage set was going to be more than just their videos. I really enjoyed the music though. The ending was just odd and anti-climactic. Crowd was too beat down after the whole fest.
Any Dub Step - Didn't like it going into this. Tried my damndest to get into it multiple times. Didn't take. Please, no more.
Sly Stone - Didn't even show up. He can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Sadly this didn't suprise me.
Oh yes he did show up and it was one of the most awesome things ever! He came on late. I saw the webcast. It was the most hilarious trainwreck I've ever seen. I literally fell out of my chair and was rolling on the floor laughing at one point.

i was there when he was supposed to go on, to a pretty packed tent - but they said it was postphoned. i felt bad for the next band, since their fans would be missing the show, and waste their time showing up for sly.
they announced the new time for the sly stone set after Atoms for Peace and the guy next to me said "hah, that's a pretty funny joke" and "i cant believe they would just make fun of sly like that" - they also put the sly stone settime on the monitors on the second stage during the gorillaz
somehow, my gf didnt know he is known for not showing up and being a recluse for the last few decades...
i need to see that webcast! are they on youtube or somewhere?

What??? After Thom Yorke some announcer came on and said "Sly Stone will be playing at 10:45 at the Mojave tent due to his plane being delayed........maybe." I thought it was a joke. Why was it so bad/funny???

My friend also agreed about the set times. He said by the time acts started getting their grove, the set was over. Glad some people enjoyed it. My friend informed me he will never go back again.

Nobody ever dogs how Roo is run, just the lineup this year.
I beg to differ. A lot of people say "Dirty frigging hippies", "It's too far to walk" "The dust is everywhere" etc. I hear it all the time but mostly on the Coachella board, so it goes ...cr****

Sly made Ozzy Osbourne seem completely coherent. He had no quacking clue what was going on. He was stumbling around the stage the whole time and he even laid down once. While attempting to play the keyboard, he was sitting in a rolling office chair and he would keep zoning out and rolling away. It looked like he fell asleep a few times. He would keep stopping in the middle of the song and yell things like, "What the quack was that?!?! What was that noise? What is that?" Obviously there were no actual unusual noises. Probably the funniest part was when a stagehand gave him a towel to wipe some sweat off. It was just a plain old white towel. Sly flipped the quack out over it! "Ahhh!! What the quack is this!" He looked so lost and confused Then his exit was priceless. He rolled off the stage and proceeded to walk along the front rail. He just kept going and going and didn't stop. The whole band was looking at each other all confused like what should we do now as Sly just wandered off into the unknown. End of show. It lasted about 20 minutes. Some of it is on youtube. Dance to the Music actually came off sounding alright for a minute. I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard.

You have to catch it on youtube or somewhere. It was the funniest concert moment in years. I think I am spacey sometimes. Old Sly made me look like a walking genius ...

As soon as Thom Yorke ended and they announced about Sly "Sly Stone will be playing 10:45 in the Mojave tent, we hope..." I literally couldn't stop laughing, probably the funniest thing I've heard in awhile.
About the camping pass, after I went in Thursday to go to Tent Only, the guy at the gate said he didn't even have to scan it and that I should go back in line and scalp it, which I though was fucking ridiculous. I didn't want to get out of camping because I didn't have my ticket anymore so I waiting until he ripped off the stub and went on with the other part of the ticket. Nobody ever checked my camping ticket again, but I still couldn't believe the volunteer recommended me scalping it.
After going through my pictures I forgot some other highlights for some reason,
The xx was one of my favorite sets of the weekend, I thought they would be boring live but I was mistaken. Great sunset slot.
I'm taking Grizzly Bear for granted, they played one of my favorite sets of the weekend as well, but only getting 50 minutes was a crime.
well i was curious to find out your reviews of the fest and this post and the one previous game me a good idea. im very glad to hear thom and grizzly pulled it out
