Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Your going to get the same wrist band we got in VIP last year. Plastic. RIFD chip in it. Orange and ugly.
No one tracked us from the air. No one scanned it when we went in. No one gave it a second look. No one came and carted us away if we did something naughty.
But carry on. Viva La Revolution.
if no one scanned it - why was it there? pardon my ignorance.

Bonnaroo is just using technology to make things easier for everyone, they dont care about who is doing what and where, instead of having to go around placing bracelets on everyone they just scan everyone quick, no big deal and lines to get in initially will go much faster
Ok. This is REALLY not a big deal. I promise. This RFID chip/wristband serves a three-fold purpose.....and thats it.
1) They (AC/S) simply want to reduce the chances of people making counterfeit tickets/wristbands.
2) Zero paper tickets = a greener festival + money saved on printing said tickets.
3) Hopefully quicker vehicle entry into the main grounds. I'm thinking if every passenger is wearing their wristband, then 1-7 quick scans per average vehicle with an RFID scanner coupled with a vehicle check is a logical and faster alternative to the prior method (the driver giving the tickets to the volunteer, the volunteer scanning tickets, then the volunteer distributing wrist bands to everyone, etc).
To the paranoid, rest assured, these RFID chips are passive. Meaning they have no power source. They require an independent external electromagnetic field, a la wrist band scanners the volunteers will be equipped with at vehicle entry, to validate your entry into the festival. Really, thats it, your wrist band simply scans you in. There will be no huge electromagnetic pylons scattered throughout This Tent and The Other Tent and the Mushroom Fountain. Ashley will not be watching your every move. The organizers are simply practicing logistics and loss prevention with low level radio frequency identification.
All will be well, Big Brother will not be watching......well at least not from the plastic around our wrists.
Yeah but I still want a ticket. A plastic wristband is a pretty Leno-y souvenier.
And I agree with you 100%. I have proudly displayed my '08 and '10 tickets in my office. I'm really bummed that "Bonnaroo X" will not have a paper ticket as a souvenir, and mind you a plastic wristband most likely vs. the nice artsy cloth ones.

I work with RFID every day and I can pretty much guarantee they will be tracking how often people are coming and going through the main gates. I'd bet money on this one. With that said, I doubt they are going to offer anything for payments if this is the first year they are using this for everyone. The cost of RFID systems are through the roof.
My guess is that the main use of the RFID chips will be to track the flow of the patrons around Broo so that they can optimized flow patterns for future roos. AND Track the demographics of the patrons with respect to the bands that they are watching (they will be able to determine how long you stayed at any particular venue). once again to optimize the lineup for future roos. I think this is fantastic, and glad they are going to use technology to improve roo.
"Actions Speak louder than words" It's the equivalent of filling out a questionnaire without having to do anything. Remember, this system approximates your location, it's not a pinpoint system. They would have to have RF receivers that overlap one another in order to determine your exact position. I think this would be overkill and stupid for the purposes of collecting data that benefits Roo.
If you are still worried that the MAN is after you. Build a small Faraday cage out of copper screen to hold your wristband.
Look to all these people worried about tracking at all. The RFID chip is a TICKET!!!!, they will check it at the gate, and that will be it. Good lord people, you all really have a inflated opinion of what RFID can do.
Some of these RFID systems are not at all bulky so it would make sense if they are using them to track traffic patterns - peak times for arrival & exit especially. All of the information they are collecting they already have so it's not going to be an issue of "your information floating around" - hopefully it'll help them determine who plays when & where. It sucks when two similar bands are on at the same time and you want to be there for both sets. This could be a very good thing for the future of Bonnaroo

Ummm unless they put a bulky battery these things the chips will not work unless they are within a few centimeters of a reader.
One more time here
PASSIVE RFID IS USELESS FOR TRACKING PEOPLE UNLESS YOU ARE ACTUALLY HOLDING THEIR HAND!!!!!!
Maybe they will do it on the way into centeroo as well as on to the farm, but that is it. Personally I do not really care if the lot bums are going to be unable to sneak in anymore.

Dude, chill. I do indeed work with this technology EVERY SINGLE DAY! I know what I'm talking about. We use this technology to track people in/out of trade shows w/out them even knowing about it. You are way off base by saying the tags need a battery - the power source will be in the gates or sensors. The tags are encoded and the sensors can pick the data up from 20+ feet away. So, that fancy BONNAROO gate everyone walks through could be loaded with these things to pick up everyone's entry/exit times. The likelyhood of them putting all your information in the tag is slim to none. The organizers using RFID tags should be the least of people's worries.
^If you use it every day you damn well know that without a huge tower to generate a electro-magnetic field that the chips are essentially deactivated. Trade shows have doors, Bonnaroo has a gate so stop perpetuating this ignorance. The only thing they are going to do is stop people from making fake wristbands. Also I would love to see the RFID technology that can activate a tag and read it from 20 feet away. Do you think they are going to make the arch into a scanner, because that is what it would take?
Also what happened to you thinking they were going to track the shows we were at? Which is why I had to point out the stupidity of this to start with. Sure they might check you at the gate, but when you are checking individuals you are going to use a hand scanner, I doubt they care much about traffic patterns.

It would be sweet if everyone was tracked and we got to see the map of the USA on wednesday June 8th, i think it would be so cool to see where every roo-fan comes from and to see a map of all of us in mid-commute to roo, i imagine all the major freeways having multiple "DOTS" cruising slowly toward manchester, TN.

haha Not feeding into any fear, just letting you know you are wrong. They will be tracking, but it's absolutely nothing to get your panties in a bunch over. It's a good thing for future events and keeping scalpers from making a boatload of cash. We use UHF tags and there's no battery on the attendee's badges. It's a simple RFID sticker. About 1/4" wide & 1" in length. The only information it's going to be tagged with is a ticket number. Those numbers will then be loaded into their scanners at the gates with an accept/deny function. No reason for anyone to freak out. www.gaorfid.com/images/UHF-RFID-Tag116028.jpg You can set this system up w/out doors, hell, it could even be buried in the ground. Cell phones can deactivate these things. You know those fancy tolls on some highways that have the express lane if you have the express pass? They use RFID technology. It just happens to be tied to a debit/credit card. Is that w/in centimeters to capture your information? No. Battery powered? Not likely since it's lasts for years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_toll_collection How RFID works -

Gee but how are they going to use this to know what shows we go to like you originally stated.
They are tracking the gate nothing else, and yes you are trying to feed into peoples paranoid fantasies. Also please go ahead and show me the RFID scanner that works from 20 feet away? Every express pass I have seen certainly has a battery btw..

It's on the youtube video. I'm not trying to bust your balls, I'm an easy going girl. They could use it around the main stages easily. I've never been to Bonnaroo, this will be my first year, so I have no idea how they set the stages up. At Lolla & Pitchfork it seems like there were arches here and there, they could have sensors on something like that. But that's just from past experience. Anyone who's worried about these things is being silly... I was just trying to clear the air that nobody is going to be able to access their data aside from the show organizers and if someone did manage to access their data, it would just be a number that would mean nothing unless they had the entire ticket database which is even more crazy paranoia.
No hard feelings, man. I am new here and don't want to get off on the wrong foot.

wow i havent been around for a few days but i love the direction this thread has taken... fyi, i think bonnaroos had control of my soul since 03, i wish i could just say the festival scene in general but theres really just nothing out there like roo
Getting onto the farm they are still going to have to scan each individual like they would each ticket. They are probably going to have to check each persons wrists bands to see that they are securely fastened around peoples wrists too. IMO this will take just as long to get in as the old way.
Scanning bracelets will now just be one more thing security has to do before letting people in. I don't even want to think of the pain in the ass that could insue if scanners don't work properly throughout the festival.
Sounds like the only people this helps are bonnaroo. Are there really that many people sneakinng into centeroo to warrant this?
4. I miss having a physical ticket as well, they have gone downhill but they are nice to have. I certainly still have my collection of 06-now.
Someone pointed out that the VIP people were given some sort of souvenir ticket so I don't really think this will be a problem. I'm sure we'll get some sort of ticket-like thing that you can save.
We (VIP) received a commemorative ticket last year after we got into the fest. I bet souvenir tickets for GA will get handed out like the CD's used to back in the day, when you come in the first check point.
