"Come early to avoid traffic delays!
This year, Bonnaroo will open on Wednesday evening June 8th at 7:00PM to allow more time for vehicles to enter the campgrounds. Historically, the longest delays for arriving attendees have occurred from 4:00AM to 7:00PM on Thursday, so consider these peak delay times when you plan your trip. Come early and get ahead of the crowd!
The parking lot and campground will OPEN at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 8, 2011. The parking lot and campground will CLOSE at 3:00 PM on Monday, June 13, 2011."

So what is the general opinion on this? Do you think that Advertising the open gates on Wed Night will make a huge difference in when you get in and where you end up?
I was hoping to do what I did last year and get in line (I-24) at around 3am (which put us about 4 miles from the Roo Exit,) but now I'm worried about how many people will already be in line by the time I get there.
I'm hoping that the general public that doesn't spend hours and hours disecting what time to leave and arrive on this message board will read the main site and plan on getting there a little earlier that the peak times that were mentioned.
I think this will make the line on wednesday night move a little slower but take away from some of the stand still traffic that happens on Thursday around noon.
I really haven't gotten a good answer for this....Do you think that this means the tent only area opens up at 7pm as well? I heard it opened at 7 or 8am in years past on Thursday but I'm not sure if this change will change when it opens.
Wow, that's cool... I don't know if that would change my travel plans if I was going, though.
This already changed my travel plans. I would have changed them even more if I would have known sooner. I would have asked of work on Wednesday that way I could get there when the gates open. I plan on leaving STL around 6pm and getting in line around 2-3am. Hopefully the tent only area will still have spots!

Something tells me that Walmart and the police may be keeping their lot clear and telling people to go over to Roo, getting there on Tue don't make a lot of sense to me but do your own thing. Also I am sure they are doing this to try and ease the lines into Roo. For me knowing this is going to be a 12 hour drive I want to get in reasonably quick, set up, and get some rest before the party! I am thinking 5-7am arrival in by noon up by 2pm.
This probably won't change our plans unless my bro gets off work early. He leaves Northern VA at 5:00 PM Wed. Gets to SC by 12:00. We leave there right away to get to Manchester at 7:00 AM Thursday. It'd be awesome if he could get off at noon though.
so we can continue going in on wednesday like we've been doing for years? ok roger that
Nice. Isn't earlier than previous years? Either way, I hope it takes down some of the traffic since I have to come in Thursday morning.
I don't think so, in 09 I got in at 6pm on Wednesday. I'm hoping the difference this time is they open tent only early as well, cause camping Wed night in BFE then bringing your stuff over on Thursday morning was a pain.
will they still be letting ppl in once it is dark cause i find that hard to believe?
Yea....that's how they do it every year. Do you really think that they would tell the line of people "Hey.....it's getting kinda dark....you'll have to come back tomorrow".
They have lights and the first people have been let in late Wednesday/Early Thursday for years now.
I'm pretty sure I read this on the site a while ago under the FAQ section. Seems like everyones talking about it now cuz of an e-mail roo is sending out.

That's not what I meant. What I meant was the whole reason people started hanging out in the parking lot because they were waiting to be let in.
Eventually that's what turned the three day festival into the four day festival.
Now that they are advertising the Wednesday opening eventhough they've been doing it for a few years, I think there will be more people showing up on Wednesday morning/afternoon in order to get into line for the evening opening.

This year will be my first time, but from reading on this board the difference is that the gates won't close once they open at 7pm Wed. In years past didn't the gates open at 7pm wed, then close at some point late at night, and then reopen again around 7-8am thur? So if you showed up at 3am you'd have to wait for 4 hours for the gates to open...so you could wait in line for longer still, ha.

No, not at all.
Can you imagine waiting in line for like 5 hours, getting right up to the entrance gate, and then being told "hey guys....we're closing up for now. come back later/tomorrow"
It would be a logistical nightmare. The car lines into Roo are usually very long and if they just stopped letting people in then there would literally be nowhere to go. People would have to sit in their cars overnight while waiting for the gates to open.
What used to happen is at some point Wednesday night the gates would be opened and they'd start letting people in. Once the gates are open....they stay open.
I remember my first year I got there at 7:00 AM Thursday, we didn't come earlier because they were saying if you got there before 7:00 you'd be turned away, but there were already hundreds of cars ahead of us.

So then it really is no different than years past? The gates have always opened Wed evening and stayed open. People can drive in at any hour of the night? And there is still a long wait in the weee hours of the morning?

It's very different. In the past they would tell people that they wouldn't be allowed in until Thursday morning. There are a portion of the Roo crowd who know that they can get in early so they would always head in but not EVERYBODY who goes to the festival would know that they could have gotten in. So not EVERYBODY tries to get in Wednesday night.
Point is, they never promoted opening it early so a majority of the people (mostly people who don't check inforoo or haven't attended the festival before) would show up at some point on Thursday. This year they're opening it up extra early and promoting it so that more people can get in before music starts.

Hmmm, I too would really like to know what this means for Tent Only. If I can go at all there's probably not much chance I could be there Wednesday night, so if they open TO only too, well, I would pretty much not have the option of going TO. I'm KINDA thinking TO will still open the next morning, though. It would suck if wanting to go tent only basically required you to show up the day before the festival actually starts.
I'm also really curious about how they'll start filling in cars/campsites on Wednesday night. In the past it's always seemed that going in Wednesday night would guarantee BFE, but now that they're publicizing the Wednesday night open, I'm thinking they'll probably fill campsites the same way they fill the rest of them. Good news for anyone going in Wednesday who wants a closer spot, I guess! Bad news for anyone who wanted BFE though.

While they do tend to try and fill up BFE early.....that doesn't always mean going in early would put you there. It's really luck of the draw. I went in Wednesday night/Thursday Morning the last two times I went and got nowhere near BFE. I had a short 10 minute walk to Centeroo.

That makes sense, and yeah I can see you are right there will now be people who will get there Wednesday morning so they can be in line for the Wed eve opening. Next year they could have bands on Wed. Eve. then.....Makes you wonder how long before this becomes a week long festival?

A quote from Ashley Capps, one of the Bonnaroo founders:
At some point you’ve just gotta decide you’re not going to do some things. All of a sudden your festival lasts a week instead of three days and originally the Thursday night thing evolved because it was just local acts and regional acts and we didn’t even announce who was playing. It was intended just to give the people who came to the festival early some music that they could enjoy before the actual festival kicked in big time. And it was our opportunity to surprise people with new artists that they probably didn’t know, but that we thought they’d really like.
Then it became more and more popular and more people kept coming to the festival earlier and earlier so we turned it up a notch and started booking bigger up and coming acts. It’s still generally focused on relatively new artists to their scene but have a considerable buzz gathering around their music, but we really don’t want to program the big stages that early in the weekend. It’s enough to stay focused on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

watch 'em flip the script this year and put every1 that shows up weds night in the prime spots while those who get there thurs morning get stuck in BFE.
