Wonder if this could be related to very strong ticket sales. Knowing that even more cars are gonna show up this year than in the past few years.
I don't think it has anything to do with ticket sales.....it probably has more to do with complaints from the last few years about traffic and waiting in line.
originally the Thursday night thing evolved because it was just local acts and regional acts and we didn’t even announce who was playing. It was intended just to give the people who came to the festival early some music that they could enjoy before the actual festival kicked in big time. And it was our opportunity to surprise people with new artists that they probably didn’t know, but that we thought they’d really like. .

Why's AC gotta lie like that? The first Thursday night bands in 2003 weren't "local" or "regional" acts. One of the first was Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, who were playing on the main stage the next day!
That Ashley, always lyin'. [/quote]
That Antibalas set was a blast. But I wouldn't say A.C. was lyin' about the Thusday bands being lesser-known locals back in the day. We've gone from Pink Floyd & Rolling Stones cover bands in 2003 to Vamp Wkend & MGMT. Antibalas was exceptional and led to bigger/better things.
Nice. Isn't earlier than previous years? Either way, I hope it takes down some of the traffic since I have to come in Thursday morning.
I don't think so, in 09 I got in at 6pm on Wednesday. I'm hoping the difference this time is they open tent only early as well, cause camping Wed night in BFE then bringing your stuff over on Thursday morning was a pain.
i dont think this is new either... i want to say it was the norm for at least the first few years of the fest. i never went that early once because friends of ours did a few years in a row and ended up parked by the main medical tent off of woodland road, i think thats the road... if you have been out there before, you had to walk across a small bridge and then they built up vip infront and i do believe you need to walk out and around that now too, or did the last time i use the med tent anyway. like i said, i never parked there and have only used the med tent a few times but was told before they fill in there first because its the furthest end of the parking lot from an enterance, which would make sence.

It is new.....in a way.
The actual process of going in early isn't new. That used to be a "secret".
Bonnaroo telling people to come early because they are opening the gates Wednesday night (as opposed to telling people "Don't come until Thursday morning or you will be turned away") is a new thing this year.
I think I feel positive about this. I mean, the last two years I got in early on purpose to avoid the longer line, but have a longer walk. Now it's probably gonna be a total guessin' game. But it could cut down on traffic overall. Hopefully. But I'm hopin' my favorite part of the 007 campgrounds will now spread all over on Wednesday. Just gettin' to meet your neighbors, start talkin' about who everyone's excited to see, where everyone's from, blah blah blah. As long as I get my caravan taken care of it'll be great!
I still think that they'll fill BFE first because isn't that where they fill in VIP from but in the opposite direction? I'm guessing that they won't want to try and coordinate two-way traffic down there.
I'm a little bummed, though, because from 05-09 I showed up at 1AM Wed and was in pretty much the same spot in BFE. Last year that got scuttled due to the monsoon but I was hoping to be back on track for this year. That area's just pretty quiet and chill and you're surrounded mostly by Roo vets who knew that if they came early they could get in early and set up camp.
I won a free night for Wednesday night at the Holiday Inn Express at Exit 114 and I was pumped to finally get to see the Wal-Mart scene after 7 years. But I am wondering if this will change things and I will miss out again.

It will probably affect the magnitude of the scene, but I'm sure there will still be plenty to see. If you are going to be in town Wednesday already, I'm sure there will be plenty of pre-festival festivities during the afternoon and evening as people are coming into town.

I think you are right. One thing I am worried about is when/if they will block off the I-24 entrance ramp on Thursday morning at exit 114. I would love to get a good night's sleep in the hotel and hop in line right there at 10 or so.

I've got a motel in murfreesboro for wed night (40 bucks!). i don't mind being stuck in BFE as long as it's not the very back, I can handle a 25 minute walk.
What time should I plan on leaving the Murf and get in line?

As of now I don't think anyone can give you a good idea of a time to get in line. I think this official announcement of the earlier openin' of the campground changes the parkin' game. I'll agree that chances are that if you're in line earlier Wednesday night you'll probably still get camped in 007/BFE. But it might fill up faster this year.

That's what I loved about the 007/BFE campgrounds! Lotta veterans. But last year especially I felt there were a lot more virgins! Most of my neighbors had never been before, but were great friends all the same!
So again, I'm tryin' to stay positive about this. I think mostly I'm now just worried about how long the line will be startin' on Wednesday now.
"I think mostly I'm now just worried about how long the line will be startin' on Wednesday now."
Ha! I was thinking the same thing. This will be our first Wednesday night entering. We won't even get in line until 9-10, depending on the drive. I can't imagine it could be worse than last year...in line at 8am, in the gates at 8pm. Boy, there's going to be a lot of beer consumed Wed night. Hope I don't get to camp in BFE and find TO is already open. We're going to have one long drunken hike at some wee hour. HAHAHAHA
So... according to roo's Ask Gary feature, Gary makes it sound like Tent Only will open Wed night. Then again, it's a very generic answer and doesnt make sure to mention if it includes TO. "This year, the festival grounds will be opened for people to start setting up camp at 7pm on Wednesday."
Personally I'm pumped about the earlier time. I've been to the Wal-Mart for the last two years and to be honest I think it may have lost some of the greatness it had from before. Don't get me wrong I met some rad people, but mostly what I saw was people who partied way too hard on the first day, and were clearly not waking up soon, when we got inline at 6 am. I do wish I could get the Yiungling All the time though. We don't get it here in Iowa.
For the rest, I will miss the Wal-Mart party but I won't miss sleeping straight up in my car waiting for morning to come only to sit in a line and not be able to sleep, because I need to stay awake incase the car ahead one me moves 3 feet.
Honestly, I still wish that the farm opened on Thursday morning. I was excited by this news at first, but after letting it marinate I think that it is going to cause me problems. Especially under the assumption that T.O. opens on Wednesday also. I was planning on getting to Roo about 1-2am on Thursday so that we could hopefully secure a spot in T.O(we still are), and now that the gates open at 7pm on Wednesday I'm afraid that we won't be able to get it.
The change in gate opening times honestly just puts us back at square one. No one really knows how this will change things. Hopefully for the better. Hopefully it doesn't make the T.O fill up too fast. I have a feeling that we are going to have a LOT of new roo'ers this year and they won't even realize the change in the time. My hopes are that many already asked off for work for Thur/Fri/Sat/Sun and can't ask off for Wednesday now. (of course I hope this isn't the case for my fellow inforoosters )

Or maybe they will not know as much about TO so will be less likely to pursue it. I'm staying with the car either way, but I'm trying to be positive for you.
I keep considering doing tent only, but I dont know how to secure my cooler when nobody is home. I think I will stay with my car and pray that I get a decent spot. I may also go in wednesday night. The bond camps CANNOT be any worse that Grizwald last year, and once again, I will likely donate atleast $20 to the golfcart taxis
The more and more I think about it I don't think this year will be any worse than previous years. It was announced so late in the game that alot of people already have plans set and taken time off work.
I got lucky with my plans as I had already taken off a few extra days, but I'm not the norm for a Bonnaroo attendee.
If you arrive Thursday morning or even afternoon, you will find a spot in tent only. We were stuck in line Thursday until the first shows were starting. We had space for an easy up and a small tent right next to it. Of course TO has shrunk over the years.... I'm starting to think people are feeling the tinges of anxiety that sometimes couple with extreme excitement.
