This year, Bonnaroo will open on Wednesday evening June 8th at 7:00PM to allow more time for vehicles to enter the campgrounds. Historically, the longest delays for arriving attendees have occurred from 4:00AM to 7:00PM on Thursday, so consider these peak delay times when you plan your trip. Come early and get ahead of the crowd!
The parking lot and CAMPGROUND will OPEN at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 8, 2011.

A little bit of both maynardave, but so many on here have been wondering if the campgrounds were gonna be opening Wendsday night as well. So I checked again and sure enough they will be.
No, they're wondering about Tent Only. Traditionally it hasn't opened until after BFE has filled to prevent two-way traffic down that back road.
Edit: Also wondering about VIP which in the past hasn't opened until BFE was full.
(Both of those things happened because they let folks in earlier than the posted times, hence questioning if those time-frames have shifted or will remain the same.)
They do but the thing is the use the same road that feeds BFE but they go the opposite direction. Obviously that road is not built for two-way traffic so something's got to give there.
I read earlier in this topic that Thursday started because they wanted to let people in and have minor acts going on that night, then grew to what it is now. So could this be an indication that Bonnaroo is getting close to expanding by a day? Maybe not this year, but next if enough do show up on Wendsday. This will be my first year there and I am planning to be in Manchester by noon on Wendsday at latest at this point.
Too soon to say if they'll make the festival longer. I imagine AC/Superfly would probably wait a few years to see how Wednesday night fills up, and they'd probably have to talk to the town about extendin' the festival.

In the "Ask Gary" Q&A section of the Bonnaroo site the answer to the question of when tent only opens suggests it is Wed. at 7 p.m. A clarifying question was asked five days ago and has gone unanswered so far.
I wasn't aware there were gates around TO keeping people out. Thought it was just open between the roo arch and parking areas. Correct me if I wrong though.

I think that it's considered "off limits." There might also be a line of cones preventing you from getting in.

I could see this getting earlier eventually with events on Wednesday. Not necessarily music, but something. I know a bunch of Euro festivals open up super early before the event.

I'm fine with nothing on Wed so people gradually show up through-out the day/nite with little gridlock. If anything, maybe they'll eventually move up the set-times on Thursday with more regional acts.

This is what I'd like. They've at least pushed the Cafe acts up until just after noon. I'd like to see them start programing stages around two instead of closer to four.
Also, I'd like to see them open Centeroo early on Thursday, around 9 or 10 so that there isn't a big ol' traffic jam waiting to get in at noon. Then, LEAVE IT OPEN! No need to recreate the same scenario on Friday. They leave it open straight through the end of the festival after Friday's opening, no reason to make Friday a big deal again.

I would be REALLY surprised if they ever made Wednesday part of the fest to the extent that Thursday is now. They might do SOMETHING, including maybe some small bands playing, but I highly doubt Wednesday will ever become the new Thursday. I think they're already quite hesitant to make Thursday any bigger than it is since they know there are people who can't get there until Friday or at least can't get there until Thursday evening if they work a full day on Thursday. I don't think they'd want to add ANOTHER day that even more people couldn't make unless it was an extra thing - either something that you had to pay more for, or something small enough that nobody would feel like they were getting ripped off by having it included in the ticket price if they couldn't make it.

I would be down for them having some sort of attractions on Wednesday. I think they should keep the music to a 4 day event. At least the Centeroo music. Maybe add some campground stages for smaller bands to perform. Start allowing people to come in and camp beginning Wednesday afternoon/early evening and have some kickoff events. But I think the festival is fine the way it is with 4 days of music.

Yes!! I was going to say this. The start of the fest will always be the moment the gates open whether or not that opening is official. My fest starts the moment on Wednesday night that I enter the gates. Its irrelevant if bonnaroo officially adds wednesday bands or stages. If you bring some microphones, instruments, speakers and power sources, you are the opening act of bonnaroo... Even if you're opening at the outer limits of pod 1. I can't wait to see the first show. I hope their stage is right next to my tent.

I agree. In a sense the party on Wednesday is moving from Wally World to the Farm on Wednesday with campground djs, drum circles and other festivities.
