Had a great time again this year. Here are my favorites.
1. Radiohead 2. Flying Lotus 3. Modeselektor 4. Black Lips 5. Amon Tobin + Wild Beasts, Beirut, St. Vincent, Beats Antique, First Aid Kit, The Weeknd, Other Lives, and Laura Marling.
The first weekend of Coachella 2012 not only sold out in record time, it also drew a record crowd. According to NBC Los Angeles, 80,000-85,000 people attended each of the festival’s three days, up some 10,000 from last year (which was the previous record) and more than 20,000 from 2009. Question: Do holograms count as people?
Funny cause I cant stand M83 on record but I actually really enjoyed what I heard on the live stream. And that was one of the bad shows?!?
I'm biased, as I saw them four times before touring their other albums. I might not be the best person to ask as I absolutely cannot stand the Peter Gabriel vocals and the bastardizing of old songs that they used to just CRUSH live.
I'll back you up on this. I hadn't seen them until last year at Moog, but I was a big fan of everything they did up through Before the Dawn Heals Us. It's not the same band anymore, and I don't mean that as a value judgment - they just sound very little like the band that made the first three albums. While watching them at Moog, I found myself wishing Gonzalez had changed the name of the project before Saturdays=Youth. I wouldn't say the new stuff is bad, it's just not my thing.
Just getting around to this thread since returning from my first Coachella. What an experience! Radiohead and Dre were easily the top acts. Some other great sets I saw were Band of Skulls, Noel Gallagher, Modeselektor, araabMuzik, Bon Iver, Flying Lotus, Real Estate, the Head and the Heart, Santigold, and Beats Antique.
M83 was one of my most anticipated acts but they were somewhat disappointing. I ended up in the back of the tent due to my late friends. The sound just was somewhat muted and I was constantly being shoved by people moving in and out of the crowd.
While similar in scope musically, Coachella is much different than Bonnaroo. I still can't decide which is better. The art sculptures are far superior at Coachella. This is one of my biggest disappointments about Bonnaroo. They really need to step up their game in this area. The people are really the biggest difference, as different as California and Tennessee. There seemed to be an element of people there just to be seen and say they were at Coachella. People are just friendlier at Bonnaroo and the music seems to mean more. Security was way more intense at Coachella, to the point that I almost felt molested. The bathroom situation was much better at Coachella. I never waited and they were always cleanish. Finally, the beer situation at Coachella is ridiculous. I just want to buy a beer and go to a show. I hated the beer gardens.
This is probably the only time in the foreseeable future that I will go to Coachella, so I am very glad I went. Bonnaroo, however, will always be home.

Spot on. That was exactly how I felt about everything. Down to the fact that this is the only time in the foreseeable future I'll be able to go to Coachella. The only difference is that I was close for M83 and enjoyed it. But we even had the same favorite shows of the weekend.
Are they not live streaming this weekend??? I wanted to rewatch all my favorite sets!
The last few songs were great. It was the earlier stuff that I was having a hard time watching due to options. Of course I had 2 other options at the time, with just a click.
I'm also sure that a lot of people will disagree with me.

Buzzcocks was rad. I left for 15 minutes to see part of Kaiser Chiefs, but I spent every one of those 15 minutes wishing I was back at the Buzzcocks set.

Absolutely great weekend even though it was really damn hot until Sunday night after the music was done. My top shows in a not very thoughtful order:
Radiohead - Jeff Magnum - Andrew Bird (cool St. Vincent sit in) - The Black Keys (cool Fogerty sit in, they covered The Weight in memory of Levon) - The Death Grips - Dre and Snoop - Fitz and the Tantrums.
I'm amazed again at how well run this festival is. The art and technology really set it apart from other festivals. I love Bonnaroo and I know they try for a different vibe but AC should be going to school every year in April. There is a bunch of stuff that really should be incorporated.
