I'll be camping, sorry LD. But have you actually looked to see if there is even a room to rent before you start asking around? It looks like there isn't:
Really? I could have booked a room about a month before the festival last year.
I just checked the closest lodge that came up on the lodging part of the MJ website (Kaatskill Mountain Club). Im guessing it was the on-site lodge. Again Im a MJ noob. I could be looking in the completely wrong place
I can't vouch for it. Just what nbcst said. I'm not looking to rent a room though. I'm taking so many days off, I can't afford it! I'll vacation pay for job one but I'll be losing upwards of 1000 bucks of missed Cheesecake shifts

I tried to post the link but it wouldn't work. I just went to Google maps and the area code is 12442, so I typed "12442 hotels" and it comes up with about 10 or so places. I'd start with those, because they're going to be very close to the festival. If those don't work, you can look farther away.

ITM, Flanzo, I will be looking to you too for moral support during those few weeks! Yeah, I need to take some sleeping pills and PASS OUT that Monday night for as long as humaly possible (I'm not a later sleeper normally)
Ncb- It does look sad! Sometimes, it's a Roo birthday, but now it's all off it it's lonesome. Oddly invigorating to have it "so far away" from Roo. Spending 20+ hours in the car on your birthday (Roo 2010) SUCKS.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Now I'm seeing Mj >> Roo as a challange, and now reeeeeeeally want to accept it. Although Mj only 3 or so hours away and flying to Roo kinda feels like cheating.
It's going to be a HUGE challenge. I am hoping that it'll be a tad easier than it looks based on: A. It's only three hours away from me too. B. I won't get woken up at 7:30 AM from the heat C. VIP= free, hot showers D. I am aiming for no late late nights at MJ to reserve as much energy as possible for Roo.

Umphrey's started at like 1 last year, and went to what... 3?
I fly to Roo anyway, so it gives a few days to rest up. Bonnie, you should come with. Save yourself a little hell and make a few bucks while home those extra days.
Ya the late-nights go way past 1, but don't worry about it. I was able to sleep in my tent until 10-11 almost every morning no problem. One big thing to consider is the cold. If you are camping make sure you have a real sleeping bag. I would say one rated to 20-30. It gets COLD.
I didn't say I would be up late.. just not late late. I'll be up late enough to see at least some of everyone. I have trouble staying up past 1 or so anyways unless I have a little help. I am an old woman at heart. I like to camp, so I am aware that I will need to pack some warm pjs and a thick blanket, but damn... 20-30? That seems absurdly low.
I don't plan on ever flying to Roo unless I absolutely cannot find a Roo buddy to drive with. I want all my gear with me and I don't really mind driving. This year, my main Roo buddy is planning on bringing lots of goodies to sell. If that's the case, I doubt that I'll want to be in the same car, so I might be looking for other options.

Absurdly low is right. The weather can be really unpredictable and intense but it is a unique and wonderful factor of the festival. In 09 Sunday was the greatest example of the huge variation that is possible. The day started off warm and sunny with a few clouds here and there. There were rumors of a storm coming but they hardly seemed believable. Then right before Franti started it started getting windy and the mountains started getting dark. About ten minuets in to Franti's set they starting tying stuff down and eventually they made him stop playing. Pretty much the second he stopped the storm hit. It rained intensely for about 15 min before the storm blew over (during which Franti and a few members of his band came out into the crowd with drums and such and led a drum circle/chant for the people crazy enough to stay). After about 15 min it stopped and by the name they uncovered the equipment on stage it was already sunny. They blasted "Here Comes The Sun" over the PA and then started where they left off in the set. The only problem was after the storm passed through the temp dropped a good 30-40 degrees and the wind kept up. I was on the rail the whole time camping for Levon and thank God I made some friends who held my spot so I could change out of my soaked cloths after Franti ended. The temp continued to drop as it got dark and when I got to my car after Levon it was 34.
My best friend volunteered last summer. He said it was the best volunteer experience he ever had. Everyone was really laid back, easy work, super helpful.
And baconus - I ran back to my tent for that mini-storm, then felt foolish when it was gone so quick. But "Here Comes The Sun" really helped pick my spirits right up! That whole weekend was probably my favorite festival experience ever! Wish I could be there this year!

I believe the schedule came out fairly late last year. Maybe only two weeks before. It doesn't matter as much though because the two main stages are side to side and have no conflicts. The only other stuff going is the indoor stage and acoustic stage. Conflicts were not a problem for me either year
Dave is playing Boston the Tuesday and Wednesday in between MJ and Roo. This is sounding more and more like something I need to do. God knows how long it would take to recover from nearly 2 non stop weeks.
