And if this little tidbit were true, then it would be a problem wouldn't it? Unfortunately, this is BS, so, no problem there!
This is absolutely, 100% true. Sorry if this bursts the little bubble you reside in.
Yep this is not a story I heard second hand, this legitimately happened to my landlord last year. Also I take your point about jail or a citation roofan, but like a lot of things there is always a third way. Would Coffee county prefer to have Bonnaroo and be able to have a much more secure budget than most towns these days or would they prefer to run everyone off by writing minor BS citations in the campgrounds? There were what 90 or so total citations in 2009, and 450ish this year? They are going to citation themselves out of a lot more than they are going to gain if they are not careful.

I'm a first time rooer, so I may be naive, but I didn't see any cop harassment/theft occurring during my experience. We were camped in Camp Dillon and never bothered/had anything stolen. After Sunday I left Centeroo feeling so overwhelmed by how safe and happy I felt during the entire weekend, I kept telling my friends at home that this was something I believed I couldn't find elsewhere. The freedom and friendliness I experienced made me say to myself that I had to absolutely return every year until the roo is shut down.
That being said, my friends and I were post-show volunteers and during the first 10 hour shift of picking up trash in the sun, cash was stolen from our volunteer campsite. Yes, it was quite stupid of us to not lock up our cash but we were so used to a safe environment and didn't think to take necessary caution. A bunch of other volunteers had their cash stolen (only cash, nothing else) too. Apparently security let in outsiders and they were just combing the volunteer site while we were working. It's sad to know people would steal from volunteers, but also our fault for just leaving our valuables out to get taken.
Still have that magical feeling about Bonnaroo and will be coming back, definitely.

I was camped at Principal Vernon, while walking back with my friend down main street we came to the point where the fence is and all the cops on atvs were just chilling off to the side. I was carrying a back pack and my friend kinda tripped or something over a rock. The next thing I know I see my buddy walking towards the cop, so I instictively followed not wanting to leave my buddy high and dry. I walk over and he asked us if we were having a good time, we said yea and then asked us if we had anything on us that we shouldn't. We both said know and the turned to me and said "you look like you smoke corn, do you smoke corn?" I replied, yea I do so what? he says "well where is it, I thought you didn't have anything on you?" I said yea officer Its somewhere where you won't find it cuz I'm not stupid enough to have it somewhere that it'd get me in trouble, he said, "wow well you're smarter than most of the people at this thing, do me a favor and empty your back pack and pockets" So i did and what do you know, he found nothing and told me to be safe and have a good weekend. In reality my corn and chillum were in my cargo pocket which he didn't ask me to empty. My friend had been to every roo up until 09 and this was his first one back and was extremely confused by this cuz he said it's never been like this before. I didn't get mad, it was just more of an annoyance, honestly I think the cop for just screwing with us cuz he was bored.

Bottom line is this: Bonnaroo is not it's own country free from U.S. law. Illicit druggzz are illegal. If you want to play, be prepared to pay.
The cop presence doesn't really bother me at Roo, but the increase of shady characters and thefts has me considering other festivals but I guess that sort of thing is going to go on everywhere. Sometimes the cop problem seems worse than it really is. For instance, I went to Wanee this year and someone on those boards said that they were approached suddenly by Sheriff's Dept. while they were burning some. They weren't issued a citation or arrested but got the snotty comment "Y'all are lowlifes for choosing to live like this."
When Wanee was over there was one arrest for possession. They were mostly looking for dealers and possession of hard stuff.

When I was getting searched on the way into centeroo I forgot to put my stuff in my shoe and the security guy found my corn, after I tried to reason with him I was forced to pull it out of my pocket along with my chillum, he looked at it, said wow man this is some good stuff, now was that so quacking hard, go in and smoke one for me. This is my first roo so I was a little shocked lol

I'm glad this story ended that way. I hear of too many who give their corn to the volunteers.

It's interesting that some in this thread are complaining about the thiefs and the sketchy festival goers while other are complaining about the police and sketchy security guards.
Very strange. Can't we just get rid of both somehow? lol

re: sketch factor at roo - i haven't been back to roo since '08 (though i have been tempted), so i'm not an authority on the crowd/vibe of the last couple of years, but i can say with complete certainty that it is not just roo crowds that are becoming less than desirable; it's the scene in general. maybe i just had my rose-colored glasses on back when i first started festing, but it feels like where i used to see kind folks coming together to enjoy a temporary community full of peace, help, and awesome music has quickly turned into way too many spun-out 20-something wooks scheming on how they can rip someone off or steal someone's shit just so they can stay loaded for a few more days and forget to feed their "service animal." i broke up with roo for waka for the better crowd/vibes that i had read so much about, and for the most part, the crowds were better (sorry). but sadly, this year the waka board was also a-buzz post-fest with similar stories of shady characters and attendees not feeling safe - one girl who waka'd solo said she felt completely unsafe after dark (think she's also an inforooster). if a person doesn't feel safe AT A MUSIC FESTIVAL, then mission: FUBAR; festivals are supposed to be a haven for escaping the troubles/drama of the real world, not encountering similar problems with idiots high on bath salts and nitrous...it's actually quite saddening that threads such as this one even exist -- a sad statement on humanity and our culture in general, i guess...

This! It's all festivals! There were asshats at Wanee this year too. And believe me, just like Bonnaroo I locked ALL of my sh!t up in the car before heading to the shows.
No, the dog stayed with his handler right next to the car.
Could have been taking himself to poop.
Well, I thought about that... "There's the state trooper taking a hike through the tall grass to take a leak, 30 yds away so it's not urinating in public. And, there's his partner with the dog standing by the vehicle, so they have his back if something goes wrong."
Bottom line is this: Bonnaroo is not it's own country free from U.S. law. Illicit druggzz are illegal. If you want to play, be prepared to pay.

I will say I did not have the first problem with the Bonnaroo security staff this year. I never really got searched hard, and never really waited in line for more than 5 minutes.

With all sketchiness going on in the campgrounds (and I'm not talking about illicit substances), why wouldn't this draw an increased law enforcement presence?
This isn't necessarily shady, but i got really pissed off when i saw that someone tagged one of the rented tents. Really dbag? They gave you 489637963 walls to graffiti and you go and tag a rented tent.
this and did you see people tagged the mural posters of the bands @ the arc entrance?!?!?! like i remember thinking to myself "that not even graffiti art... thats just obnoxious tagging." these ppl need to go back to coachella.

whoever drew a penis on the boss made me .
looked like someone in the crowd was holding on to it.
entering thru the arch felt like i was cattle or getting ready to ride a roller coaster.

First time poster, long time Rooer. Heres my thoughts, its an opportunity for the local police force, just as its an opportunity for car rental agencys to jack up the price during huge events in their respective city. Or Airlines to raise prices during spring Break. Not saying its right, but thats how our society works unfortunately. Anyway call me lame or whatever, I dont partake in corn or anything other than the occasional beer. I always have a wonderful time with my wife and friends, we love music and most people, we are glad Bonnaroo comes to us. I dont get aggravated with people too much, I just move on and enjoy myself. Hopefully one of these years I will get to meet alot of you. Sound like a fun bunch. Peace

bsalvia217 - The answer to "do you eat corn" is ALWAYS NO unless the asker is handing you a fresh, full cob!
Also: "Don't bring groceries to the grocery store" is the best advice I ever heard on here. I just don't think its worth the trouble or the worry (for me).
The citations in the campsites make me VERY sad though. That's some seriously unsporting behavior.

This year was the first time in my three Roos that I saw police presence in the campgrounds. Camped in Dr. Egon Spengler, at some point during Saturday morning, I woke up and Voidoid told me about the cops who just busted our neighbors for toking. Rode up on ATVs, took their stuff and wrote a citation. Never had that happen to myself or to anyone of my knowledge in previous years. As far as getting pulled over on your way to Bonnaroo, I honestly feel everyone gets a fair waring through one Google search or quick read through yoderoo's Arriving at Bonnaroo Guide. Just don't be a dumbass.
People were walking by my tent a lot too. I was in the tents only area right across from centeroo. I heard several people in the tents next to me that didn't sound like my normal neighbors. There were definitely free-loaders looking to get some free stuff. But yes I saw LOTS of sketchy people walking around. Especially on Sunday night. You guys know that Manchester is notorious for it's gang activity right?

We had a pair of deputies creep up on our campsite in RV because they "smelled some corn" and thought that it was us. It was not, so those two moved along and about 30 seconds later 3 more popped in asking "Who's the mushroom man?" (referring to a tapestry I have up and my gnome/mushroom village). I told them I was. "Well then who's the mushroom woman?" They looked around the hookah lounge, saw the hookah didn't say anything really after that.
Second year we've had the deputies come check us out. The gnomes and mushroom village really attracts those looking to buy, sell or bust. Meh.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Camped in tent only, right near the breakfast burrito stand. My friend had her backpack stolen which contained all her cloths and a wallet. Some of our beer may or may not have been stolen also, but thats beside the point and probably was just me anyway lol.
There was also a huge bust right beside our tent, some older vendor was chased down while he tried to eat all of his stash... he was out of his mind. Needless to say they caught him, I remember my friend yelling during all of this chaos "IS THIS REAL LIFE?" what a bazaare roo moment.
I was using the ADA entrance all weekend long. Never got searched once until Sunday. So I never bothered hiding the contents of the front pocket and I usually had a few beers in my backpack. Well on Sunday the security decided to check my bag. He looked right at everything I had. Then looked at me and I tried to give him my best "innocent me" smile. It totally worked because he closed my bag and handed it back to me and told me to have a good time.
Then about an hour later we were at Joy Formidable and had the two empty cans at our feet ready to be recycled when the show was over. A security woman came over and repremanded us for having "outside" cans with us. She then told us she was going to have to take them. I said ok and handed her our garbage which she threw out for us. Double win.
First, good to honest, laugh out loud I've had all thread.
Wow. All this talk about thieves and shady characters makes me glad we stayed in a house in Manchester. We didn't get searched driving in but some punk kid asked my son if we had any durgs. We said no and he said, "you did them already?" I just kept quiet and we went in. They looked in our trunk but we didn't have anything worth bothering with. Never asked us to get out. Maybe because I'm old! ;-) Both of us carried in audio gear, stands and chairs each day and they barely dug through my backpack. I spied a Frank Zappa lookin' dude at Centeroo the first day and he had me in in about 20 seconds. Nobody ever asked me about the audio gear and we never had any problems. Of course, neither of us had anything illegal, so it was never an issue. I have no problem with the cops, but I hate thieves and annoying shady carney types. I definitely want to come back, but would have some problems camping. We camped at Talladega Superspeedway for 11 straight races and NEVER had anything touched. Of course, you don't screw with people's stuff at a NASCAR race. MSTaper
