My thought is that they wouldn't want a festival gig so close to their own fest.
Why? Honest question here. I can't see how playing at Bonnaroo would affect their own fest, over 1000 miles away. Solid Sound is going to be a sell out or close to it.

Just the exclusivity of it, Katy. Since it's their fest, they want it to be as exciting as possible. It'd be more exciting if it was one of their only shows next year or their only festival show. We've seen what oversaturation can do to a band: look at how certain people have soured on The Flaming Lips as a live band over the last several years.
If Wilco played Bonnaroo, I'd be ecstatic, but I just don't see it for some reason.
In 2011, in addition to playing their fest, Solid Sound, they played Beale Street, Jazz Fest, Sasquatch, and Fiji Rock Fest, along with a complete tour. They don't have a history of using exclusivity to hype up Solid Sound.

They are doing at least one other Fest besides SS in June already. I don't think that SS will hinder them at all. They are work horses who know which side their bread is buttered on. Touring and playing fests is how they have built such a loyal fan base.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

One could argue that people have soured on the Flaming Lips more due to their live show being based off a visual spectacle which has been pretty static for years rather than them playing a ton of festivals.

I don't think they would rule out Bonnaroo because of playing their own festival. If anything, good word of mouth from a festival like Bonnaroo might encourage more people to their own fest. I certainly was a much bigger Wilco fan after seeing them when they played in 2009.
Gotta agree with the consensus. I actually think it makes them more likely for Roo. I don't remember the exact logic but at their Mass MOCA show this summer I heard rumbling of why it made sense(I think it had to do with Solid Sound originally being scheduled the weekend of Roo or something of that nature).
Believe it or not, I've never seen Wilco. Which is weird because I like them a whooooooole lot (YHF is one of my top 3-5 records of the 00s). Every time I have plans to see them, something comes up. If they are indeed at Bonnaroo, I will catch them unless they conflict with something epic.
I could never see Wilco enough times, but I've only seen them twice, each time at Roo. Both times I left right before they finished due to Roo conflicts; the first time for The White Stripes, and the second for The Mars Volta. I wish they would come to New Orleans for something other than JazzFest, but I'll settle for that if they want to come this year.
I feel the same way. I saw them twice also, once at the St Augustine Amphitheater and once 2 days later at Hangout. Amazingly they had completely different shows. At the Amp, they felt mellowed and serenading, pulling out California Stars in the encore. At Hangout, they rocked my face off. Like hard. It was great!

Can we make this a Roo date, three years in the running, yet never to come to fruition?

i've finally gotten around to checking out wilco. this is my introduction to the band
got any album you guys would reccomend for a noob to wilco?
All of them? Handshake NO NO WORD!!! is off of A Ghost is Born.
I'd start in the 90s with Summerteeth. Then go from there with their most critically acclaimed album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and it's follow up A Ghost is Born. Then go with Sky Blue Sky because it introduces two members that now make up the current lineup of the band. Over time they have helped evolved their sound, so give their latest, The Art of Almost, a look next.
Something like this...
SummerTeeth Yankee Hotel Foxtrot A Ghost is Born Sky Blue Sky The Art of Almost Being There Wilco: The Album A.M.
But to answer your question. If I had to recommend one album in the hopes of making someone a fan, I'd go with Summerteeth. We've actually debated the albums on the board before. I'll try to update this with a link. But Garageland is correct too.
