It always comes down to money and how bad the city wants it to happen. Sadly, I just don't think Asheville wanted it to happen.
I think this was more evident when you contrast it with Big Ears. Knoxville's mayor is a very visible and vocal supporter of having Big Ears in Knoxville. She shows up at the events and talks it up in the press. I never saw anything like that from anyone in Asheville during MOEMS/Moogfest.

That's a bummer. I don't think the event sold nearly as many tickets as they had planned on. Their pricing structure and line-up roll out was a complete miss. I outlined my thoughts on that a few pages back.
Could be a bluff to get more $ from Asheville, but I doubt it.

Honestly, Big Ears was the first thing that came to mind. Knoxville is throwing almost $1m to keep that festival there over the next few years. That says something. Asheville wanted the notoriety, I think, without the price-tag.

It should be noted that this was printed back in January and it's the first I've seen of it. I'll be sad if it moves as I love Asheville exponentially over Durham. It would be a lot closer for me though and easier to lock me in. It's really a Win/Lose situation for me.
Thats an old article. I tried reaching out to Moogfest when that first came out but couldn't get anyone to comment. I'll be running into the Moog folks at Movement so I'll try asking them again if they plan to keep it in Asheville. I'd be pretty upset if it moved.

Jesus fucking christ, I almost vomited thinking this meant it's the same exact weekend as Movement in Detroit, but Memorial Day is the following weekend next year.

Damn, I really wanted this fest to stay in Asheville. However, judging from Moog's website, it looks like they at least smartened up on the two biggest issues I found with the festival's structure. They've moved to 4 days, and are offering $99 pre sale tickets right off the bat.
Not surprising at all considering they only sold ~7,000 tix. BUT there are 2 easy fixes that should really boost ticket revenues and cut costs if they decide to bring it back next year:
1) Move to 4 days instead of 5. 5 days is tough sell for any prospective customer, even the music-fest junkie; a 4 day fest is a much easier sell. Furthermore, programming was pretty light on both Wednesday & Sunday. Changing to a Thursday-Sunday fest should be an easy decision that can help cut costs and increase their potential customer base.
2) Pricing structure. Absolutely horrendous pricing structure. Any consulting they received on this aspect of the fest couldn't have been more off base.
- $200 pre-sale and $300 on-sale is not ideal pricing. Announcing the lineup in waves also more than likely resulted in slower ticket sales, thus leading to the $99 flash sales. While that was a great deal for those who could take advantage, it left a sour taste in the mouth of those who bought early, and also yielded little to no money to the festival. -A more traditional tiered pricing structure would be ideal, something along the lines of: ~$100 pre-sale (limited quantity) ~$150 pre-sale (large quantity) ~$175 on-sale price (limited) ~$200-275 tiered pricing up until day of fest

So some overlap then?
Oh, without a doubt, especially since Paxahau books both festivals now.

I can't wait to be living within driving distance of way more fests. this should be awesome! (though I do with I could have experienced an asheville festival)

So did any of y'all attend Moogfest in 2010? I ask because I am going to see The Volt Per Octaves on Friday. Listen to some of their stuff which sounds good and they use Moog instruments live on stage, which should be interesting to see. The thing I am curious about is that they are playing with Bernie Worrell and apparently they did at Moog in 2010. Having a hard time imagining this group playing with a funk guitarist and was wondering if any of you caught that show?
Yeah, I echo the sentiments of wishing it was still in Asheville, but Durham's cool enough. I'd say I'm more than likely in on this unless something comes up between now and then, and assuming they keep up with the rather great lineup of 2014.

Did anyone else pick up a $99 early bird ticket for this year? Still getting over the shellshock of hearing they'd made the move from Asheville to Durham, but Durham will be new territory to explore in terms of food, venues, etc. so I'm trying to look on the bright side. Hopefully Durham's as walkable/accessible as Asheville is? Who's booking things this year if not Paxahau? And when do we start up an official Moogfest 2016 thread outside of this one?
