What are you talking about? Costa Rica played for around an hour with only 10 men and Greece failed to capitalize.
Greece played most of extra time with 10 men after an injury. Anyway, Costa Rica has looked good, but I don't see them beating Holland. If Holland plays the way the played against Mexico yesterday I guess they could lose, but I really don't see it happening, they don't have a good back four, I think the Dutch will be able to exploit their weaknesses, especially if Robben keeps playing the way he does

Who got hurt? I was watching the game and don't recall this happening at all.
Anyway, Costa Rica should be able to put up a fight against the Netherlands. The Dutch goalie really isn't good. Costa Rica also has a huge home-field advantage - they are definitely more accustomed to the heat, which is clearly a huge factor in this WC. I'm not saying I expect Costa Rica to win, but they are definitely a darkhorse to surprise people. Don't forget that they won all 3 group stage matches and are coming off a huge emotional victory. They are on a roll...

Don't remember who is was. But on the screen in extra time it said "Costa Rica and Greece playing with 10 Men" above the score. All that you said is true, but if we're talking weaknesses Costa Rica's back four should be discussed. Holland's front three is top three in the world, give any of them, especially Robben, a little bit of space and they're sure to put one in the back of the net. Costa Rica has been spectacular. It's hard to believe that's the same team that the US was playing against in qualifying

Or that the whole fucking country has a population less than South Carolina. The shots from San Jose after their last win were insane. Pandemonium. It's what makes the Cup the greatest single sporting event in the world.

Just some fact correction: Dr. Joe - Costa Rica did not win all 3 group games. The won 2 and drew 1.
Son of a Beek - after looking into it Greece played and finished the entire game with 11 men. I think you're confused about Greece having to remove an eligible man for penalties in order to keep both teams at 10 possible shooters.
Costa Rica play with a back 3/5, not a back 4. This is very similar to Mexico's system that was effective up until the Dutch changed to play a more traditional 4-3-3. I'd be surprised if the Dutch came out in a back 3 again this tournament.
Also if not for the sham of a game in the snow in Salt Lake City, Costa Rica probably would have finished over the US in WCQ. They beat the US 3-1 playing at home. I'll concede that they've been a surprise this torunament, but maybe shouldn't have been. Clarence Goodson recently tweeted that they were far and away the best CONCACAF team the US played in qualifying.
Also, two goal in 4 games with two shutouts is hardly "shaky"
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
Prior to the US v Germany game, I've never watched more then 20 minutes of soccer in my life. I've watched the US/Germany, Brazil/Chile, and Costa Rica/Greece games in entirety now.
Have to say, they've all been enjoyable games to watch. I'm not a big sports fan most of the time, but I could see myself watching World Cups and other major tournies.
Soccer, like baseball, can be very exciting and stressful. But, if you aren't into it, it's just a slow, confusing game with little scoring.
Pick a team you want to follow, and the rooting interest makes the game much more compelling. NBC Sports Network carries the Premier League games every weekend during the season, and those broadcasts are a blast to watch. A lot of the guys you have watched in this tourney (T. Howard, Paulinho, Schurrle, and most of Belgium) are regulars in the games. Pick a team at random, and get behind them. (personally, I recommend Tottenham Hotspur -- Come on you Spurs!)
I would add Chelsea to the big clubs. Although I hate them.
It will be interesting to watch Manchester United this year -- first year without European plan in ages. Having their weekdays free may make them more dangerous for league Saturdays. Or, they may miss all that extra income and become just another club. They have not had to manage much turmoil since SAF took over in the stone ages, so everyone will be tested.
I'm not going to lie, I don't support any specific club team. I never got into it b/c the EPL wasn't often televised when I was growing up unless I was at certain friends' homes that subscribed to soccer channels. Having said that, my parents and all their friends are immigrants from Europe so soccer has always been a focus growing up (especially the world cup, which I've been following/watching since I can remember). Besides that, a lot of my closest friends are massive soccer fans (2 chelsea and 1 liverpool) and another actually plays for a team in the USL. I'm definitely no expert on soccer, but whatever I do know about it has pretty much been through watching the world cup/USMNT, the occasional champions league or high profile EPL match, or through osmosis.
If I had to pick, I'd go with the NY Red Bulls. Although in reality the only team I have genuinely "followed" is the USMNT.
FTR, I think we win today 2-1. My brother keeps talking about how we're going to outflank them b/c the Belgians have 4 CBs playing, and they won't be able to handle the speed on the outside. Here's to hoping we can make something happen in whatever brief opportunities we get b/c I don't see us holding possession that much. (Apparently for T.O.P in the group stages, USA was 31/34 teams. ::vomit:: )

I feel you, I'm from a Dutch dad and an Italian mom so soccer was always the priority in my house as well. My dad supports United so I adopted that as my team too. I agree with you. Our usual 2-1 score line would be great. I'm calling goals from Altidore and Bradley today

My club is FC Barcelona. Even though they had a down season and it's becoming increasingly clear that they need to bring in more young players, I love me some tiki-taka.

Even if Altidore plays (im still doubtful he will, honestly) I wonder how truly fit he will be. Hamstring pulls are notoriously easy to reinjure. I'd be worried the first time he takes off on a sprint that he retweaks it. It would be great if he could play, but thinking he will AND score a goal is wishful thinking, IMHO.
I do hope bradley can get a goal. he has looked out of form the past two games. when he is on though, he commands the midfield and set the pace for the game. We need a big game from him.
edit: also, I'm a chelsea supporter, mostly because I used to loooove michael ballack. and still love arjen robben.

Altidore won't start but I foresee a quick substitution for him into the game. A goal would get the stadium rocking from him, however I am thinking Bradley gets one today and we go into penalties 1-1.
Bradley has been pretty bad and I'm not expecting him to improve against an organized Belgian squad. Hope I'm wrong. When he's good, he create a lot of opportunities for us

on the contrary, i think if he plays at all, he will start. if klinnsmann subs him in, and he winds up getting hurt again, then we've just used 2 subs. also, if we sub him in and then go into extra time, is he going to be fit enough to handle that? if he starts, klinsmann can control exactly the amount of time he plays, and isn't risking losing another sub in the case of his injury. Plus ALL of belgium's goals in the group stage came in the 70th minute or later. I don't think Klinnsmann risks subbing altidore in. the smart play, imho, (if he plays at all) is to start him and sub him at halftime, and depending on how the game is going put in an attacking midfielder and switch to the 4-5-1 we used against portugal and germany, or sub in aron johansson or wondo up top with dempsey.
then again, im just another dude on the internet armchair managing.
4-3-3 Bedoya-Dempsey-Zusi Jones-Bradley-Cameron Beasley Besler Gonzalez Johnson
It's really a 4-5-1 but whatever. No beckerman, altidore a late sub. Think this is the game for Bradley to show up and Johnson to show his speed on runs down the flank.
i fully support leaving beckerman out. i think he is overrated, and doesn't add anything to the attack. his first look when he gets the ball is backward.

I hope Cameron has been working on his clearances.

Very true. That Belgium 4-2 victory last May was heavily due to missed clearances and several US mistakes.

Well that would be the logical thing to do. But really who knows how Altidore really is? Klinsmann and the US team are the only people who know his true status. I think the US really wants to get a feel of how Belgium is going to attack. If the time of possession is swung too far in the Belgians corner I believe an Altidore substitution will come in the first half (that is, if he is close to 90%).
I just realized while watching the first half that I have a completely different arsenal of reaction sounds for soccer than I do any of the other sports I watch. I'm guessing that's because I learned to watch soccer in Germany with Germans. Someone should do a study on it
