Haha, for me team sports is a different animal. If I was going to compare him to a football player, I'd say Steve Smith. They both seem so angry, and for what? Immaturity. Time to grow up guys. I don't hate Kanye, he's not the devil or something. I mean I love the Beatles, but John Lennon was an enormous prick. I'll still listen to his music, but I wouldn't be very excited to see Lennon, not like Macca or Harrison. That's for sure.
Ironically, I'm listening to Kanye on shuffle right now, only College Dropout, Yeezus, and 808's. I have the rest on CD.
It is true that John did a lot of bad things in his younger years (beating his first wife, neglecting his first son), but he changed in the 70's and became a good person. As much as everyone loves to hate on yoko, she did make him a better person, I have that to thank her for.
Once again, I get not wanting to see his performance, I get disliking his music ("not feeling it").
But this is where I get confused, no matter how many times someone tries to explain it to me.
Beat a wife, neglected a child (but got better!) > not humble, egotistical, outspoken, showed up late to a festival performance

It boggles my mind really.
It is crazy how someone can relate domestic abuse and child neglect to the way Kanye acts....But I guess if you really dislike him than you can make sense of that in your mind. Although I do agree with the haters about not liking him for the way he acts. I enjoy some of his music from the earlier years(still don't like him as a person), but I can't get into his newer stuff.
For those of you that really like Kanye....surely you don't like the song Bound 2 right???

And don't mistake - I also understand someone not caring for Kanye's public persona. I'm only speaking here to the comparative valuations.
Edit - Oh and I actually do like Bound 2.

Lol, at least you got a few good years out of him. Yall must have been pretty tight.

by no means is it his best song on the album, but yeah, I like it too.
If only we could hear the world with different ears.
Yes. But I don't see the rant as a mistake, I think he earned the right to say what he did. He's the best conerback in the game, so have no problem with him saying it
A single outburst compared to Kanye's track record is a poor comparison. Steve Smith is close, though.
That's not his only time of acting like that. He has been doing stuff like that since his rookie year. But one thing about running your mouth all the time....if you can back it up then no one can really say anything. I like him for the most part...I love watching him play.
But I don't think you can compare Sherman or Steve Smith to Kanye...Its just a different thing IMO.
I mean, if someone doesn't like a headliner, why shouldn't they skip?
With the money it cost to go to Roo, I think every person should do the exact thing that makes their trip the best for them. If that means skipping a headliner then great...If that means waiting in line for the Pit all day and not getting to see the other shows then you should do that.
With that being said...I have learned through my Bonnaroo years, with the money spent on a headliner to be there and the money top artist spend to put on a good show....its generally going to be pretty awesome to see. They are headliners/top artist for a reason and 90% of the time they are going to put on a kick ass show. I couldn't believe it last year when I saw people staying at their camp site for Macca...I just figured nearly everyone would be there for that...Just because of who he is and I figured his set up/show would be insane. And it didn't disappoint one bit.

If I couldn't separate the art from the artist, I would have to throw away at least a third of my music, books and movies. Thankfully I don't feel that way (which is good, since I just got the Morrissey autobiography for Christmas).
If I were going to be at Bonnaroo this year, I'd give Kanye the same chance I've given every headliner in my four years - stick around for 45 minutes or so, and if it's not doing it for me by then, it's probably not the show for me. The way I feel about Kanye is a bit like how certain board members feel about The Beatles - it's not that I think he's terrible, just that he receives an undue amount of praise. If he goes on another 27-minute rant though, that's when I'd head off to the Broo'ers Lounge. Ain't nobody got time fo' dat.

Whoa whoa, i never attempted to connect the way kanye acts to domestic abuse/child abuse. beavdog151 mentioned that he could never have gotten excited for a John Lennon concert (if he were still with us) because of the fact that he had been a prick in his youth. I acknowledge that he was a pretty bad dude in the 60's, for the physical abuse he used against his family. But he changed in the 70's he dropped his entire career for 5 years to be a stay at home dad because he didn't want to make the same mistake twice (abandoning his first son). I'm not excusing his earlier actions, but he did becomes a better person as he aged, I believe in redemption/forgiveness.
edit Pops this is also my response to what you said, haven't figures out how to multiquote, sorry.

The thing with Sherman is that he's just a shit talker. A lot of athletes are shit talkers, most of the greats were, MJ was probably the best at it. I compared Steve Smith because he always seems angry and ready to fight which is how Kanye seems to act. Short fuzes for those guys. I do agree that it's hard to truly compare an athlete to a musician, though.
I definitely used the word "fan" loosely here. I like how he's brutally honest, but of course there are times where he makes terrible points and gets annoying. Personally I'm a big Woody Paige guy, he's awesome!

Skip Bayless is a scummy little shit-weasel with absolutely zero integrity.

And that is why Richard Sherman tearing him to shreds is the best thing ever shown on ESPN

Boom.
Plus I think forgiveness is something people need to practice more of. We all make mistakes and it's not fair to hold something over someone's head forever. People grow and change....although I understand the concept of "fool me once.." , it seems we never give people second chances anymore. Or third for that matter. From Lennon to Kanye and all those in between, they made mistakes and because they're in the public eye they can never live it down. I think that's unfair. Just gotta forgive, move forward and love man.
Dang it I'm starting to sound more and more like a hippie.

I disagree, I think most people tend to be forgiving, sometimes too forgiving. There are always gonna be the over-the-top people out there calling for Kanye's head that will not waiver. Some of it falls into the category of people being sheep. I'm sure there are plenty that attended in 08 that are still mad, but I've met a decent amount of younger people that don't want Kanye at Roo, just because of what they've heard about 08 and they weren't even there. This behavior happens a lot today.
It's really tough with celebrities because all we get to see is what the media wants you to see, at least for the most part. There are some artists that you can get an idea of how they are in real life when you see them up close, whether it's live or recorded. To be fair, most of us will never know these people so it can be tough trying to judge ones character, especially if the media pushes you one way or the other. A ton of celebrities freak out on the paparazzi. Some people learn from their mistakes, while others continue to make them repeatedly. So far, it's seems as if Kanye keeps making those mistakes. He's gotta understand that it's the media's job to get a reaction from him, good or bad. Even though a lot of laws in this country are bs, assault seems to be a good one. When somebody pisses you off I don't think that gives you the right to cause bodily harm. Kanye's pretty young still so I think change is possible but it becomes harder and harder when you surround yourself with knuckleheads like Kim. I myself am very lucky that my wife is the opposite from me when it comes to fighting and violence, she's helped me change a lot in the past 7 years. Like Kanye I grew up in a shitty part of Chicago, I've heard him use that as an excuse to fight with people, which is just immature and ignorant.
Personally, I wish Kanye the best, I hope he matures because he has a chance to be iconic and as big as he sees himself. Nothing wrong with being cocky but a little humility is equally important. Life is all about balance and love is always the answer.

Aw, you think Kanye does insane things by accident? That's so cute!
And please shut up with your "love is the answer" shit. I'm going to throw up.

I don't think he does insane things on accident, he does them because he's immature and ignorant. If he surrounded himself with less knuckleheads, he might actually grow up.
I'm sorry that you're not a fan of "love" That makes me sad

How often have you ever heard of one of his "knucklehead" friends getting in trouble?
I have no issues with love, I hate people that use cheap, meaningless cliche's like "love is the answer."

It's a great comedown from the album's intense journey.

Cheap? Maybe deep? But yeah, that Dalai Lama guy's a real asshole that should be hated.
Pretty simple for me. I think he is a pompous ass and I cannot stand his music. I will have no qualms or lingering regret missing his performance, if it happens, no matter how many lights and actors and mountains.
I can't think of an headliner that I would skip. I've been trying to think of one for awhile. I just think it's so close minded not to even give it a shot
I have heard him. It takes more than a spectacle to get me to a show. There has to be another reason. Such as enjoying or even being on the fence about the music. What he is like or at least his persona is simply just another reason not to see him. The important and most heavily weighted is not enjoying the music, at all. Call it closed minded if you would like, no skin off my back.
If Kanye played unopposed I'd definitely check it out. I waited for him in 2008 for about 30 minutes after Sigur Ros ended, but then got sucked into the laser-beams from Ghostland. Maybe my ADD will always win out over casual devotion to a musician.
I never judge an artist's music based on their public image, and I do love all of Kanye's albums. I was there in 2008, and honestly, if you are going to show up that late when three other shows are going on, of course I'm going to leave. I didn't take it personally, but I did get a laugh out of all the reactions from people the next day. And Ghostland was a blast.
But yeah given a 2nd opportunity, and if unopposed, I'd love to attempt to see Kanye again. If he played opposed, well I'd certainly pick him over the Jack Johnson type.
