I guess I just don't care. If you disagree with her "shock" method of getting publicity, ignore her.
How many rock musicians over the years have openly mocked Christianity? How many have mocked presidents, politicians, religious groups, races, etc. Quite a few.
Some of the time it's to get attention, some of the time it's genuine. But making it out to be some sort of major issue that has an effect on anyone is pretty ridiculous.
As far as I can tell, this chick is a nobody and not even popular. So the net effect of her actions is pretty minimal. If anything, the protesters and people in an uproar over it are giving it far more publicity than it would have had if they just ignored it.
Seems counter productive. Like protesting a Westboro Baptist Church gathering. That's exactly what they want and it keeps them going.
I would agree with you if she and he were targeting somebody in a position of power, but this situation is different for a number of reason. Native Americans and Native American traditions have been nearly wiped out and are barely still around. Treating a headdress as a costume and ignoring its significance is an act of further erasure, and it should be counteracted. Whether this nets the mayorgoverner's daughter publicity or not is far less important than making sure that a wider populace is aware of this disappearing history so it can live on.
Also, it always bothers me when people compare hurting the feelings of someone who belongs to a powerful organization/holds a great amount of power to promoting harmful stereotypes, cultural erasure, etc. It is not the same and should not be treated as such.

Yes. It makes sense that Kliph was fired for musical reasons and that his firing was a good move.
That said, I don't think the initial headdress controversy was blown out of proportion, and I'm glad that it received attention and Wayne apologized, even if its constantly getting harder for me to like him outside of his work.
His WTF interview was fairly good from what I remember, so I may revisit that in light of all this, as well as breaking out the Heady Nuggs box set again.

It's exactly the same and by trying to differentiate them you are showing your own bias which negates your opinion completely.
Essentially if nobody paid any attention to what she did, almost nobody would have ever heard about it. Now, tons of people all over the US have heard about it since they decided to protest it and make it into a big thing.

Wayne Coyne is not a racist!
He supported a racist who was doing racist things, and then kinda did some racist things himself, but he's probably not a racist.
*EDIT*
I don't think he's a racist. I do think his actions with regards to Fallin are crappy, and I don't think there's anything wrong with calling him out for it. He's a relatively wealthy white guy, he'll be OK if we call him out for this.

Actually, since you fail to point out how my argument that they're different is false, my opinion stands. My bias is against people who openly contribute to the erasure and desecration of what is very nearly gone. Your assertion has all the nuance and credibility of a 15-y/o who believes that "racism = hurt feelings."
And why is it bad that this has become a big thing? It's certainly brought attention to how fucked up the commodification of headdresses is among friends of mine, and nobody I know went to listen to this woman's band. The fact that more people are deciding that, maybe it's a little bit fucked up to steal the style of another culture with no respect for the substance or history of the item is pretty fucked up.
Contributing to the erasure of a culture that is barely alive today is to making fun of the Catholic Church's indulgences as robbing an immobilized person who is lying in the street is to shouting that the CEO of Whole Foods a hypocrite. You may be asked to leave the store, but nobody who regularly shops at Whole Foods is going to listen to you.

I don't quite buy Coyne's description of Fallin as a fragile, sensitive girl. It doesn't square with someone who goes on stage and baits protesters with hate speech.
That said, it looks like a lot of factors contributed to this Kliph story. It looks to me like both he and Coyne had some personality issues that neither were able to bridge, and this Fallin thing just exacerbated those.

That isn't the only thing about the interview that seemed off. The whole thing seemed pretty incongruent, he kept saying the Lips are about positivity and then going out of his way to attack Kliph. I also have a hard time trusting anyone who refers to someone as a "pathological liar." It's one of those things people say to try and invalidate someone, it's like when someone publicly says someone is crazy or on crack to me. Yea, some people smoke crack, some are crazy, and some love to lie, but when someone says it in an interview it feels like they're trying to squash that persons point of view and I take it with a big grain of salt.

All I've gotten from this is Wayne is a creepy old man pedophile just trying to get into some girls (Cyrus, Fallin) panties. He's a Hoes before Bros guys.

This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

Soo I was 100% set on skipping them for Nick Cave, especially after the Wayne-Kliph fiasco, but holy fucking shit, this setlist they've been playing:
The Abandoned Hospital Ship She Don't Use Jelly Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 In the Morning of the Magicians Watching the Planets Feeling Yourself Disintegrate Race for the Prize Look...The Sun Is Rising The W.A.N.D. Try to Explain Virgo Self-Esteem Broadcast Silver Trembling Hands Waitin' for a Superman A Spoonful Weighs a Ton

Wow, that set list is amazing. If we get that at roo I will be thrilled. I've gone back and forth with flips and the superjam, but seeing that set list has changed my mind for the last time. I will be in the pit for this show. And that's my final decision. Leaving jack white early is going to be really really tough though...

I'm sorry I doubted them for even a minute. This was my 4th time seeing them and it was absolutely the best. Dare I say better than their 07 Bonnaroo set.

This was my favorite show at Bonnaroo this year. Fuck yeah roo balloon, glitter canons, Lucy in the sky with Diamonds, it was just fucking crazy. And not really that packed. It was amazing....
I'm not even sad I skipped skrillex superjam.
And I did giggle when he started doing the where's the press...

Well, couldn't leave jack white early for pit, jack had me mesmerized! So I got to the flips show right as they started playing feeling yourself disintegrate. What an amazing show! It was, to me, one of the most magical experiences of my concert going life! Also if anyone was serenaded by a pirate with a blue parrot during do you realize, that was me. It was such an amazing feeling seeing all the smiles on everyone's face as I walked through the crowd. Its hard to put into words and people will think I am crazy, and that's perfectly fine. Probably right too! It was truly everything I thought it would be and more! Only wish I could have made it for the whole set.

We left an hour into jack and got into the tiny VIP hook then hugged the inside rail - best flips experience I've ever had. Abandoned was a tear jerker to begin, and that version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was so Acidic I melted my fucking face off.
I missed a lot of great for this show, I missed nothing to embrace this experience. Best moments of the weekend
I had no idea.. No idea anything. Kind of dug the Lips in the past but with Skrillex SJ smashing against it I thought I had to skip it. We left Jack early and were heading to the SJ and I just COULD NOT help but look over at that amazing stage setup. It looked like peace and love from a distance and everyone looked SO happy. We wandered over after the first song and it was the best on the fly decision of Roo this year.
They were so peaceful, loving. The visuals were insane. They made me feel at peace. Left that show SO happy when they did Do you Realize? into Lucy in the Sky..
I need to thank my neighbors Pete for putting the seed in my head. It was his 9th Roo or something insane and Friday morning he kept saying, "I'm telling you man the Flips LOVE Roo and they are going to put on a helluva show"... Pete was right!!!

I'm going to go ahead and agree. Lucy in the sky was a total face melted. I've never left a set so happy and just like... Fuck yeah! When I saw flaming lips live changed me, it literally changed me. I wish I could quit my job and just follow them lol anyway. I've had the visuals for watching the planets stuck in my head but can't find a live clip online from their tour to rewatch it.

This is why I said the Flips were a no brainer for me as my Saturday LN choice. They put on one hell of a show and Wayne is awesome. I went to his interview on the solar stage and that made me like him even more. He even stuck up for Kanye which I personally thought was great. He's very kind hearted and down to Earth. The new album he's doing is all for charity. All the proceeds are going to help stray dogs and cats plus help families that don't have the money to take their sick pets to vets for treatment. Personally I love to feel happy and to feel the love from everybody which is what I get at their shows.

I was really really conflicted between doing the Skrillex superjam or the Flaming lips. I got the the skrillex superjam around 11. 11:30 came and it didn't start on time. 12:00 came and I could SEE the flaming lips start in an eruption of confetti and light and it took everything I had not to dart out of that tent and run to the flaming lips. The superjam finally started and it was cool and all but the entire time all I could think about was how I was missing the flaming lips across the field. Around 1 I am just not feeling the superjam anymore and finally let myself go catch the last 30 min of the F'Lips and was sooooo glad I did. They put on the greatest spectacle of a live performance and I should never let myself forget that. God are they amazing. Also I totally forgot about Wayne's Solar stage thing and I'm sad What did he do, exactly? Just an interview? Did he play any songs?
Didn't catch Wayne's solo show but did run into him in centeroo Friday just walking around before NMH. Pretty awesome to meet one of your main influences, none the less at your first roo. Granted Thursday was an awesome day but after I got to talk to Wayne it hit me "I was at roo!" It killed me leaving jack white after ball and biscuit but I don't regret it one bit
