darkside was incredible, if you didn't enjoy it you have nobody to blame but yourself or your tastes don't line up. everyone around me was dancing and I was completely enraptured the entire time.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.

Only three shows that I saw would be considered "disappointing" to me...
1. Sasheer Zamata--but it's obvious she's a much better sketch comedian than stand-up 2. Elton John--I'm not a huge fan, but expected this to be a lot of fun, and for me, it was a snooze fest. 3. Glitch Mob--being late is strike one, then I could barely hear it and we were just outside the tent in the rear...we were exhausted and I didn't know if I should have went to Darkside instead, but we just went back to camp.

Only disappointing set I saw was Arctic Monkeys. Even though I got into the pit, it was just a little boring and I thought they had pretty weak stage presence. Every song sounded the same to me as well.
In my mind, the only disappointing set was Kaskade, because I had to involuntarily see him any time I stood more than 5 feet outside of a tent for a late night show. I left Darkside a few times for bathroom/drinks/etc and literally the moment I stepped out of the tent it was just nonstop untz in my face.
I feel like the just can't seem to get the Which stage right. It's either way too quiet or way too loud.

2) Kanye- not for the reason you think. I thought the ranting was hysterical. All weekend my camp would yell "I know y'all be watchin movies!" Or "now it's my turn to piss on you!" My complaint was just that I was hoping for a better setlist.
This. But I also enjoyed the show and spectacular of it enough to let it go.
Also I went to nothing I was disappointed in really, which is why I caught a lot of full sets instead of my usual run around.
edit: 1. People talking at concerts, was rampant this year. I had to dance myself back into the vibe a lot of times because so irritating. 2. They really really need to hire a company that can do rap and hip hop vocals properly. Or they need to take their ear plugs out for a few seconds - because holy jesus I was pissed that Pusha T's mic was like half the volume of his hype man. And then like a 1/4 of the backing tracks... it just threw the whole thing off - and most people were probably straining to hear.

ICE CUBE (he soo cold) was horrible. Never felt such hate in my life. especially when he played this;
a Rap Denouncing interracial relationships! "Horny Little Devil"
[Intro:]
You are the prince of darkness Arch enemy, father of evil Hell born, demonic, savage, fierce, viscious, wild Tameless, barbaric, uncontrollabe, obstinate beast
[Verse One:]
Horny little devil, you gotta back up Horny little devil, you can't bust a nut Lookin at my girlfriend's black skin You wanna jump in, but she don't like white men So don't throw that work you fuckin jerk Or get your punk devil ass hurt motherfucker She ain't with the pale face Cause y'all fuck at a snail's pace And you might get sprayed with mace By the ebony So when she's doing her job you better let her be Don't try to pinch the gluterus Thinkin that you about to knock out the uterus Cause she'll tell you to kiss her ass quick And where I'm from, devils get their ass kicked Mr. Sexual Harrasment Asking for a blow while the answer is "fuck no" Looks like you wanna terminate But that's when I go Psycho like Norman Bates I wanna kill the devil for talkin shit Cause he can't get a taste of the chocolate African breast; cause white bitches got no butt and no chest Black women have bodies like goddesses Sorta like Venus, but put away your penis Cause the devil is a savage motherfucker That's why I'm lighter than the average brother Cause you raped our women and we felt it But it'll never happen again if I can help it (me neither) Cause nobody in my neighborhood has caught jungle fever yet So horny little devil, you better listen Before your ass comes up missin and it's like that
[Verse Two:]
Now you wanna get me Horny little must be a F-A-G Tryin to fuck me out my land and my manhood Got broke eating Spam and canned goods Locking down on my neighborhoods Treat me less than a man cause right now you got the upper hand But my ass is a virgin You mignt have fucked the Indians but you can't surgeon me And when I'm on top I wont be fuckin ya I'd rather put a buck in ya Cause I hate the devil with a passion and when I see the whites of his eyes I start blastin Dig a hole and throw his ass in And I won't be happy til I'm down to my last ten Get his fuckin pitchfork Tie him up, and then feed the bitch pork Little devil wanna fuck me out my pay But horny little devil true niggaz aren't gay And you can't play with my Yo-Yo and definitely can't play with me you fuckin homo Cause we'll blow your head off And turn that white sheet into a red cloth Plus when they're all dead I can quit that jheri juice and get a bald head Then let it nap up Go down to the corner store and beat the Jap up Clean all the crap up out my city Now the whole block look shitty Put his dick on a wood block Swing swing swing, and chop chop chop Now who's the next to nut Color Me Badd, but you can't sex me up So don't even try to put a dick in a die Because this is what why in 1991 I'ma get my gun Put an end to the devil, so get a fucking shovel

The only set I was really disappointed with was Warpaint. I really wanted to see them after missing them in 09 when they played in the cafe. They might as well played in a garage because that's what they acted like they were doing. It's like the crowd didn't exist. The sound was way off too, but seeing the singer keep running back to the sound guy, it might not have been their fault. I'm sure this isn't exactly right, but at one point, the singer said "who was at the super jam.........yeah........we were too." Ummm Ok, why do have a tone like you just found out your dog when saying that? I just found it really bland. This is coming from a fan too. I mean, I bought "The Fool" on vinyl.
I also got annoyed when Skrillex kept turning down the music at high points so he could talk to the crowd and get them pumped. It was really awkward instead.
I'm surprised with the Polica, Darkside, and Broken Bells hate. I loved all 3 of those shows.
Lauryn Hill. I wasn't feeling it all. I was right up in the pit, like 2 or 3 people back, and I left after maybe 20 minutes. I was just bored, should've gone to James Blake or Cut/Copy. Heard they both killed it. Instead I wandered over to Zedd because I couldn't really hear anything at the tents because they were both so packed. Zedd was also disappointing, but I think it was mostly they crowd. That crowd was annoying as shit.
You left too early. Lauryn Hill was my favorite set of the entire weekend. After they got the sound worked out she was on fire. Her voice sounded amazing, and her energy was great. She did Miseducation stuff, then a few off the Unplugged album, and then all of The Fugees stuff. She did all three verses of the Fugees songs, her part and Pras and Wyclef's parts. It was amazing.
It was actually my favorite set the entire weekend too. I perma-grinned from start to finish
I'm surprised nooone has mentioned Capital Cities pushing play on a laptop for their final song and then just leaving the stage.
wtf?
Yeah, that was weird. They were great other than that. And I've seen them twice and they usually play a remix at the end, but they usually stay on stage or go ino the crowd and dance with everyone. It didn't ruin the set for me, it was just awkward. No one knew whether to leave or not.
What were your, if you had any, Top 5 most disappointing sets of the weekend? Provide details as to why.
1) Frank Ocean - Short set, no live band, and minimal stage presence. Give the crowd credit though because they seemed to have more energy than Frank.
2) Disclosure - Not the band's fault, but the volume for this show was pretty low unless you were in the tent. It was hard to get into.
3) Broad City Live - Extremely awkward and not very funny.
4) Little Dragon - Weak setlist and the crowd seemed very subdued in the back.
5) A$AP Ferg - Wtf was that set?
I literally fell asleep in the middle of Franks set in the back area the tent where there was room to lay down, but in my defense I was running on zero sleep on Saturday.
Oh and who else tried to see Broad City and only got to see that Bridget Lady..... talk about uncomfortable and awkward.
Just wasn't feeling it. I like the albums. This is funny because my wife and I had been discussing how she would sound without that effect that she always uses. Well we found out and it wasn't great. Now I'm wondering why you would use it on every song then you don't use it live.
Interesting. I thought Channy's voice was on point actually. I definitely heard the effect in her vocal mix.
Trip-hop has a tendency to be a bit monotonous among more casual listeners so I get that. Different strokes, I suppose.
That's weird, we were right behind the sound board and didn't hear it. Not that it was the only reason we didn't get into the show, they were just off somehow.
I had never seen or even heard of Real Estate before but we stuck around for that set and it was definitely my least favorite (complete) set that I saw all weekend. Every song sounded the same to me.

I feel like they are a much better to listen while lounging around the house or going for a drive. It's relaxing music. That usually does not translate, for me anyways, to a very exciting or memorable live experience.

oh Monie.
token07 and I were middle center for Lauryn Hill and it was utterly tremendous. I haven't posted in the Best Sets thread yet, but she is going to be on that list for sure. I'm sorry you didn't dig it.
Apparently I left too early then. Maybe I was just getting antsy because I caught James Blake starting and didn't really want to leave him. I just had too many conflicts at this time and for her to not blow me away right at the start didn't do her any favors.
While no shows sucked (like The Police, in 2007), here are the ones I wasn't truely feeling :
1. Kanye - It was all good.....he had us forgiving him......he was putting on one HELL of a show. Then he walked into a waterfall, and walked out an A - Hole. A 25 -minute rant about how great you are.......We can all now truely say " F you, Kanye!!!"
2. Disclosure - I dont know what it was, but I wasnt feeling it as much as I did when I saw them last year at Lolla.
3. Cake - sounded old and slow......not good.
4. Glitch Mob - All of their beats sound the same......not my bag.
5. Sir Elton - see Cake above......lost interest QUICKLY!!!!!!!
1. Kanye West... Never a huge fan, but gave him a shot. I can honestly say, I was pissed, It wasn't the rant(well kind of). I expected that, but the sound, I could talk to the person next to me without raising my voice at all.... 2. Jack White.... He didn't play longer enough... Not that he didn't play a full set, but I just wanted to hear more...... Love Interruption and Sixteen Saltines were amazing. Best concert of the weekend. 3. Sir Elton John........ Boring 4. Me passing out during cake... no idea if they did good or not. 5. Everyone who had real disappointments at Bonnaroo.... Its fucking Bonnaroo, you just had the best week of your life.... come on.
I feel like they are a much better to listen while lounging around the house or going for a drive. It's relaxing music. That usually does not translate, for me anyways, to a very exciting or memorable live experience.
Totally. A lot of bands I like (Camera Obscura, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Beach House) really put on lackluster stage shows for the same reason. Even though I'm a fan, I didn't check out their set for that reason. I am looking forward to the War on Drugs here in SF in October which could be more of the same.
Cake - No energy, difficult to hear, just all around meh. Andrew Bird & The Hands of Glory - Not sure what it was, but wasn't feeling this set. Back to back with NMH really made it look bad. Kanye West - Obvious. Didn't think the music was that bad, but the awkward silences between songs and the rants killed it.
That's about it as far as sets I expected to enjoy.
1- Cake - nothing to do with them, everything to do with the Which stage. They definitely should've been on What. It was so crowded I couldn't get to a spot where I could actually hear them at an acceptable volume for a live show. Finally gave up after 5 songs and strolled right into the half empty what pit to see the end of Tedeschi Trucks. Definitely should've had them on each other's stages.
2- Pusha T - same complaints as everyone else.
3- Kanye West - I actually thoroughly enjoyed his set and took the rants for what they were and didn't let them detract from my experience. But not being able to see him at all and the fact that the show was a good 12 songs shorter than his tour left me disappointed. But still, as someone who had a bad taste in his mouth back in 2008, his performance was redeeming and enjoyable.
4- Myself for crapping out after Jack White. Really wanted to see Nick Cave, Skrillexjam, and Darkside, plus intended on checking out Mannie Fresh, but just had no energy left and went to bed instead.
That's it though. Pusha T was the only artist I thought put on a lackluster show that I saw of the 39 I was able to attend.
You missed out.
I showed up at 11:30 to get the corner rail spot, center stage for cake.
I agree a larger stage would have been better, also a slightly later show. It was hot.

I admit to being disappointed in Frank Ocean's set as well. This was my first time seeing him live and the energy just wasn't there especially for a late night show. I know he's had issues with stage presence since his introduction, but I assumed that he would have worked through that at this point.
