Arctic Monkeys was really the only set I was disappointed about. Maybe it was my high expectations but I thought they were just ok at best. I saw them open a few years ago for The Black Keys when I only knew a few of their songs and was not that impressed then either. But I started listening to them more and more since then and was excited to see them Sunday and was really let down.
Kanye - too far back to really get into it. I continue to be let down by every hip hop show I attend at Bonnaroo with high hopes.
Arctic Monkeys - one of my most anticipated sets. Got shutout if the pit, so I watched from the Avett's pit line. Something just didn't seem right.
Phosphorescent - Loved the latest album, got really bored during their set.
Dr. Dog - mid-day Which blues
Blues Superjam - left Kanye to get a good spot and sort of regretted it. The first hour was pretty boring with it really picking up halfway through. Seemed like a Tedeschi-Trucks cover show for too much of it. Great guitar as, but no x-factor that blew me away like the Soul Superjam last year.
really was only disappointed by vampire weekend. i'm a fan, mvotc was one of the best albums of 2013, but man were they boring. they opened with dianne young, and i was ready to dance.. but that shit had no kick to it whatsoever. like most of their show. wish i would've been at nmh but i was in the pit line for yeezy.

I feel that Chaka Khan really picked that show up and made it respectable, but you are right about the first half of it.
Really the only disappointing set was Kanye. It wasn't even his fault though, I was at the second set of speakers (so middle of What field) and maybe 20 feet to the right of the beer vendors. The sound was completely and utterly dog shit. It was so hard to get into because the sound kept going in and out. It would get loud then soft again. In fact, whenever he went on his rant I could only hear him talk in 3 second intervals then silence then hear him talk again. Bonnaroo really ruined the Kanye for me.
You're just too young to grasp how stylin' I really was. All the boys wanted to do me when I was 5. Actually the girls did too. My haircut was confusing.

I know I'm a total minority with this, but I was kinda disappointed with Jack White's set.
I think maybe I had my expectations set WAY too high.. and I'm not saying he was bad.. because he really was good, and top 5 for me for the whole weekend. But at the same time, he was probably the artist that fell the farthest below what I was expecting. Still really really awesome show though.
I do wish he would have played some more White Stripes.. I prefer that stuff to his solo stuff.
I left at like 12 to go grab a front row spot for Nick Cave.. which was a decision that I 100% do not regret.. but looking back at Jack's setlist, there was a few songs that I really would have loved to see that I missed. Maybe I can't judge too harshly considering I didn't stay for the full set.

Did you leave before the encore? That's when the Stripes came alive. He was one song from it being exactly 1/2 WS.

Yah, I did leave before the encore.. I'm bummed to hear that it seems that I missed out a bit there.
But considering that I left early so I could get right up at the rail for Nick Cave, who is my all time favourite artist.. it was something that had to be done.
Looks like I missed the half of the show that I would have enjoyed more though. If it was ANYONE other than Nick Cave playing I would have stuck through Jack White till the end. Ahh well. Can't win em all.

Yeah thats just a horrible conflict for you then. I think the best way to look at it is in terms of that whole night rather than individual shows. You had an excellent 3-4 hours of life on saturday night.

Haha, it really was a horrible conflict. The whole festival, Nick Cave was my #1 and Jack White was my #2.
But that's an excellent way of looking at things... By far, those few hours Sat night were some of the best in my life, just utterly amazing

Were you there when Jack told you to go see Nick Cave? All you were doing was following orders.
What were your, if you had any, Top 5 most disappointing sets of the weekend? Provide details as to why.
1) Frank Ocean - Short set, no live band, and minimal stage presence. Give the crowd credit though because they seemed to have more energy than Frank.
2) Disclosure - Not the band's fault, but the volume for this show was pretty low unless you were in the tent. It was hard to get into.
3) Broad City Live - Extremely awkward and not very funny.
4) Little Dragon - Weak setlist and the crowd seemed very subdued in the back.
5) A$AP Ferg - Wtf was that set?
I wanted to ask this earlier but my computer was messing up...this may have been asked before since I haven't read the whole thread but what made Broad City awkward? I tried to go catch one of their sets Saturday I believe but I was quickly reminded of how bad it is to get into the comedy tent. I love the show so i'm interested to hear what happened?
I figured Ty Segall would be packed out since he was the only one playing at 1:00, so I skipped White Denim to secure a spot. Had I known how under attended it would be, I would have gone to White Denim, too. But, Ty kicked so much @ss, I can't complain too much.

My only honest disappointment was Kanye. For various reasons that have already been discussed in the Yeezus saves thread. I'll just say it wasn't hecklers or sound issues.
I will say one other set I thought I'd be much more into than it turned out was Polica. I just can't for the life of me pin down why. I dunno if I was fading from only sleeping about 2.5 hrs wed night before getting to the farm Thursday? The fact that Break Science was just so unbelievably awesome and it couldn't quite live up? I don't know. Because I can't really think of any faults in the set that stood out. I just know it wasn't moving me nearly like I thought it would. And my view and the sound couldn't have been much better....I was in the stage right pit. It puzzles me.
1) Shovels & Rope. They weren't bad by any stretch. It's just that they were the top act on my list and the set just felt a bit disconnected. They literally played on an island in the middle of the stage. Their set seemed a bit rushed. It just didn't end up feeling as special as I wanted it to be.
2) Kanye. I really wanted to get rid of the sour taste that 08 left in my mouth so I camped outto get in the pit. (I find that my enjoyment of What sets is proportional to my proximity.) The revisionist history. The poor flow due to rants and/or starting over. The negativity. It didn't work for me. I didn't hate it but I won't go out of my way to see him again.
3) The weak singing ability of crowds at What. Especially during Elton John. It seems like it's a weakness at Bonnaroo, Macca aside.
4) The sparse crowd for Nick Cave. Judging by Inforoo feedback, I thought it would be packed but I don't know if it ever got to half full. Between Jack White running longer than originally expected and some stuff competition, I guess it was inevitable. (Hell, I was late as well.)
5) It's not a musical issue but I'll second Baconland. The product did not stand out to me. (I know, average bacon is like average sex - it's still with having.) They also ran out of everything but bacon on the occasion that I tried to get a grilled cheese sandwich. Points must be deducted for that.
Overall, small quibbles over a weekend that - arriving and departing aside - was pretty great.
3) The weak singing ability of crowds at What. Especially during Elton John. It seems like it's a weakness at Bonnaroo, Macca aside.
Real Talk: I was impressed with Elton's ability to perform but I had zero interest in the songs - which kinda threw off my last show on the Farm. So I think this might be a contributing factor. (plus that bonnaroo's fans are too diverse and knowing all the words becomes more difficult) I've only really seen successful sing a longs for Macca, Pearl Jam, Jay-Z, MMJ, and Arcade Fire - unless someone can refresh me about more?

I can't put my finger on it.. but I felt that way about the Elton show. Last year's Tom Petty was such a great time - and many other headlining acts as well. But for whatever reason, the vibe just wasn't there for Elton. He didn't interact with the crowd very much - and I was personally hoping he'd throw us for a loop and give us a Lion King song for shits and giggles. But I've talked to a lot of people about it, and seems everyone was feeling the same way about the Elton performance.. I just didn't get that "last hoorah!" feel that I normally get on that last night of the farm. The whole damn weekend went by way too fast to me, more so than it has before.
2) Disclosure - Not the band's fault, but the volume for this show was pretty low unless you were in the tent. It was hard to get into.
This goes for nearly every show. If you don't make it under the tent - it's like you're excluded from the fun. It feels like you're just watching the party instead of being a part of the party. There's so much energy going on under the tents.. I got there 2 hours early and managed to get a great spot up front. Easily the highlight of my weekend.
I can honestly say that I didn't encounter any disappointing sets at Bonnaroo.
A disappointment would mean I had some expectations (maybe some that would have been too high). So I can't say First Aid Kit or Cherub (on the Sonic Stage) were disappointments for me because I didn't really know what to expect from them. I wasn't really feeling those shows, but whatever. I listened for a bit and moved on. I also expected the crappy sound on Which from a spot way back for Cake, so again, not necessarily a disappointment.
And on a positive note, I feel like ALL of the rock and roll I saw this weekend exceeded my expectations. Not only acts I've seen before (Jack White & J Roddy) but also new finds in Seasick Steve and Black Pistol Fire. Can't wait to see that last duo again. Wow!
Really the only disappointing set was Kanye. It wasn't even his fault though, I was at the second set of speakers (so middle of What field) and maybe 20 feet to the right of the beer vendors. I had the same experience - the sound was total shit where I was.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
I don't want to keep talking about Kanye but that set broke my heart. After seeing the Yeezus tour I was expecting to be blown away. It was going to be perfect, Kanye was going to redeem himself and all would be perfect. Instead the whole thing turned into a nightmare, a scary alternate universe where Kanye kinda sucked. I heard all the people up front had a lot of fun though. But that wasn't the show he should have brought. All that ranting wasn't for Bonnaroo...one good rant after killing it for the first half and that should have been it (also I thought he said he'd stop ranting for 2014). "No more chances if you blow this, you bogus I will never ever let you live this down" those lyrics I feel are kind of relevant to that Bonnaroo situation. Kind of unfair that Coachella got such an amazing show from him. Elton was a little disappointing but I think it was just because of the crowd. I knew ahead of time Elton wasn't always that great live. Thankfully I think more things surpassed my expectations than disappointed me.
Any type of list like this is subjective and only based on shows I caught and can definitely be influenced by my mood/state of fatigue. So, without being definitive whatsoever, here goes:
1. Real Estate - Slow, repetitive, unenthusiastic dusk set on a Thursday evening when I was already running on an hour's worth of sleep. 2. Broken Bells - See above, except that it was Sunday approaching dusk and the fatigue of four days at Roo had long settled in. I needed more energy at this point to stay interested. (The Shins had a late Sunday set two years ago that was way more energetic and engaging.) 3. Skrillex - Much more subdued than the 2012 set, it seemed to me, but that may be the new album and the change in his sound. I'm not an EDM-head and actually like his new stuff more, so it may be my own fault for expecting a 2012 bass-blasting repeat. (This all said, the Skrillex Superjam ranked in my top ten shows -- I feel like his energy was more focused here and it paid off.) 4. King Khan and the Shrines - For some reason, I couldn't quite get into the set. Just transparently over the top. 5. Allah-Lahs - Yes, it's lo-fi, but again, the energy was lacking.
Cake was definitely disappointing. The set was interrupted a lot by talkin about Iraq and being too into your devices. I feel like it wasn't the platform to do that. Put that into your lyrics if that's what you want to say. It broke up the flow too much and was kind of uncomfortable.
10/19/14-Phantogram
11/29/14-New Politics, Bad Suns
4/17/15-Hippo Campus, Night Riots, The Mowglis
5/1/15-Penn State Movin' On Music Festival-New Politics, Passion Pit, Big Gigantic, Big Sean
6/11/15-6/14/15-Bonnaroo!
6/21/15 - Paul McCartney
6/27/15-Halsey, Imagine Dragons
Vampire Weekend really disappointed me. I just didn't connect with their performance like I expected I would. Could be because they went right after Janelle Monae who had such a great stage presence and energy. She was the surprise of the weekend for me or maybe it's just the crowd I was around. Still love them and will hopefully get a chance to see them again. But with them being my second most anticipated act behind Kanye I will admit I was disappointed.
2) Disclosure - Not the band's fault, but the volume for this show was pretty low unless you were in the tent. It was hard to get into.

They would be my second most disappointing. I had fun but I was too far back but I wasn't leaving Kanye early so I should have known it would end up that way. Not their fault and hopefully I get a chance to see them up close eventually cause it looked great.
I can honestly say that I didn't encounter any disappointing sets at Bonnaroo.

Am I the only one who thought the sound on Cake was fine? It was the only time during the weekend I was at the Which and could hear perfectly.
Cake was definitely disappointing. The set was interrupted a lot by talkin about Iraq and being too into your devices. I feel like it wasn't the platform to do that. Put that into your lyrics if that's what you want to say. It broke up the flow too much and was kind of uncomfortable.
Cake as a band are pretty political-- and they seemed unhappy with the time slot they were in.
