Vampire Weekend really disappointed me. I just didn't connect with their performance like I expected I would. Could be because they went right after Janelle Monae who had such a great stage presence and energy. She was the surprise of the weekend for me or maybe it's just the crowd I was around. Still love them and will hopefully get a chance to see them again. But with them being my second most anticipated act behind Kanye I will admit I was disappointed.
I like Vampire Weekend just fine but they're kind of a weird band to me. Like, it's hard to picture someone being a passionate fan of theirs. Maybe because they seem so emotionally detached.
I enjoyed their show from the pit line, though, and thought that they sounded good.
This goes for nearly every show. If you don't make it under the tent - it's like you're excluded from the fun. It feels like you're just watching the party instead of being a part of the party. There's so much energy going on under the tents.. I got there 2 hours early and managed to get a great spot up front. Easily the highlight of my weekend.
They would be my second most disappointing. I had fun but I was too far back but I wasn't leaving Kanye early so I should have known it would end up that way. Not their fault and hopefully I get a chance to see them up close eventually cause it looked great.
Yeah we gotta see them again. MOEMS '13 taught me that: Disclosure = spiritual priapism

Not many disappointments at all, actually!
My biggest was certainly Kanye. Now before all y'all get your panties in a bunch, I have my reasons for being disappointed and I think they're valid. I was a bit far but not so far that it should have been an issue, but I could hardly hear him, the side screens weren't on so I couldn't see him, and I guess I just couldn't really get into it. I was really looking forward to his set because I heard he's an amazing performer, but honestly it didn't even feel like I saw Kanye. I don't mind too much when artists talk to the audience, but his "rants" were maybe too long for me (yes, I know, they're SUPPOSED to be like that, but it doesn't mean I have to enjoy it). I ended up leaving and chillin' out under a tree.
My only other and very minor complaint might be Jake Bugg. He sounded great but the show was a bit boring.. the crowd kinda got into a few songs but not really. He mainly just sang with his guitar, nothin' was really different than putting in an album. I enjoyed it much better when I saw a bit outside of the tent and listened while sitting on the grass.

I thought it was a bit lackluster as well but his cover of "My My, Hey Hey" pulled the crowd in and "Lightning Bolt" sent us away happy. I will say that he was a more interesting guitar player than I was expecting. He just needs to develop a bit of stage personality.

The sound was really great. I have no idea why they didn't connect with me. Maybe they were just too tight and no real stage presence.

We need to experience that together...
My friend said the exact same thing. Said that was the best Edm show he has ever experienced by far.
I really only had one that disappointed me - Ben Howard. Maybe I got my hopes up too high..... Everything else I saw was great.
His sound was just so so so bad.... Saw him before and it was like the biggest night and day shows I can compare too. His sound was SO good the first time and so clean. I think it started so bad with no mic for the first 30seconds to a minute of his opening song which also happened to be off his new album just killed the crowd. I too was so underwhelemed and he was my #1 to see. With that said I think they get the kinks worked out and I would instantly see him again.
I was underwhelemd by Elton too. Maybe it was the crowd.. Maybe it was just me being tired. I camped out through Avetts who I thought were going to bore me to tears and who I thought killed it into Elton who I thought would kill it and underwhelmed me. Petty closing Roo in the rain for me was way better Roo closer.
Caught 17 full sets tho and some partials which means 15 just outrageous full sets isn't bad way to spend a few days in Tennessee !

Real Talk: I was impressed with Elton's ability to perform but I had zero interest in the songs - which kinda threw off my last show on the Farm. So I think this might be a contributing factor. (plus that bonnaroo's fans are too diverse and knowing all the words becomes more difficult) I've only really seen successful sing a longs for Macca, Pearl Jam, Jay-Z, MMJ, and Arcade Fire - unless someone can refresh me about more?
I can't put my finger on it.. but I felt that way about the Elton show. Last year's Tom Petty was such a great time - and many other headlining acts as well. But for whatever reason, the vibe just wasn't there for Elton. He didn't interact with the crowd very much - and I was personally hoping he'd throw us for a loop and give us a Lion King song for shits and giggles. But I've talked to a lot of people about it, and seems everyone was feeling the same way about the Elton performance.. I just didn't get that "last hoorah!" feel that I normally get on that last night of the farm. The whole damn weekend went by way too fast to me, more so than it has before.
Your words I echo like every single one I can relate to. I just want you to know I feel EXACTLY like this paragraph in all aspects.

I got a little burned out by the self-blowing that JW and Kanye put on occasional display, but I also sang my heart out to new slaves and thought jacks first hour was nasty and only left to get a good spot in the (empty) VIP pit for flaming lips - turned out to be the defining moment of the weekend.
It's unfortunate that the other doesn't get stronger equipment, Goat would have played the other twenty minutos if it had.
I thought disclosure was great but I was also front and center and very relaxed.
Cake was definitely disappointing. The set was interrupted a lot by talkin about Iraq and being too into your devices. I feel like it wasn't the platform to do that. Put that into your lyrics if that's what you want to say. It broke up the flow too much and was kind of uncomfortable.

All my disappointing sets stemmed from logistical and production issues. The What was really quiet of Friday, still enjoyed Vampire Weekend a ton but it prevented me from really enjoying Kanye (also had to do with the poor crowd and the screens being turned off).
On Saturday they turned up the Which way too much, couldn't get into Lauryn Hill due to Zedd's goddamn sound bleed. The Skrillex super jam proved they NEED screens at the tents, the sound wasn't the greatest in the back and not being able to see who was on stage dampened the experience.

Amen to the Skrillex SJ comment. Had they had screens and better sound I might have missed the Lips insane show though... .. But seriously screens would change some tent experiences entirely.

it wouldn't have helped as far as viewing....but i got pretty close stage left. But I was mostly facing a screened fence. being 6'3" I could kinda see over it....but it sounded great from there nonetheless. And it was pretty wide open over there due to lack of viewing. There was some little adorable chick with her faced glued to the fence claiming she could see through fine as long as she was pressed up against it.

I guess I could say that I was disappointed during Neutral Milk Hotel... not with them per-se, more with myself. I was right in front of the left mains, so the sound was shit as a result. And my knee was crapping out, and I was running on fumes. I felt like if that wasn't the 3rd time I saw them, I would have most definitely have been blown away, but mostly I was just sad because I wasn't experiencing it like the rabid crowd in front of me was. They were amazing, and the crowd reaction was amazing, but for whatever reason it just didn't click with me at the time.

1. Bully ... seriously, don't sound check for 30 minutes by having each member of your band play alone their entire part of a song. This is 'Roo, the equipment is fine, just play when you're supposed to play.
2. Vampire Weekend ... the vibe out in the field was like everyone was waiting for them to step it up, and they never did. A couple of times they completely lost momentum, it didn't feel like anything more than singles strung together, there was no greater sense of a show.
3. Kanye ... There was a huge opportunity for him to be humble, entertaining, play all night, etc... instead he didn't use the video screens, so no one outside of the pit had a good view, and he fueled the haters by being an egomaniac, which made the vibes in the crowd go to trash after the first hour. He didn't put on a particularly strong show either... I'm still confused why he chose to prove the haters right, and punish general audience members in the process.
4. Skrillex ... the sound bleed from Skrillex hurt Nick Cave. Eff Skrillex.
5. Dark side .... after a weekend of seeing talented live musicians like Andrew Bird, Phosphorescent, Nick Cave, etc, seeing someone take so much time to setup and the dicking around with ambient sound for 15 minutes at 3 am, its just too much at that point. No thanks, it seemed much cooler on the schedule than it wound up being.

Well said. He certainly is a talent. Just not much of a personality. I wanted him to talk, because I cannot understand a word he says.
My biggest disappointment would have to be the crowd at Elton. I moved 3 different times just to get away from people who were not paying attention, talking, or just being plain rude to me! Some dumbass bros literally tried to steal my parrot from my hands and throw it in the crowd for no reason! It seemed to me like no one was singing along, no one was cheering, and no one even cared that we had a legend playing on stage. Thankfully I found some nice folks to watch the show with. Other than that, j Roddy was a little disappointing, and I just couldn't get into Andrew bird. Everything else, and everyone else I met all weekend were fantastic! Especially the great folk in the phoenix pit! Helped me name my parrot, he is now Phil Collins lol
My friend was reading thru this thread and pointed this out to me, this was totally my group of friends who helped you name your parrot!!!

Capital Cities was a dud. Fellas didn't seem like they didn't want to be there at all! Bad way to kick off a Saturday. Thankfully the amazing trifecta that was Damon Albarn>Lionel>JW made Saturday the best day of the weekend

Agreed anyone who didn't like Darkside can eat a cow dick. "Ewww it wasn't dancy enough"... Well when they take your brain out of your head and reconstruct your idea of what live music can be, YOU DON'T ALWAYS HAVE TO DANCE. U should have gone to dance to the candy ass kaskade shit. Sorry I've been working all day and I'm a little grumpy.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
