I feel it should be mentioned that Kanye shortened his set while Jack lengthened his. Do you think it was because of the artist or the audience?
He played roughly the same set he had the weekend before and will likely play the same set all summer. Some bands ended early, some ended late. Who gives a shit either way?

So Kanye was trying to be inspirational. Fine, but he didn't get his point across to at least half of the audience.
I think nearly everyone felt like what Jack White was saying was pretty cool, to the point, and certainly wasn't perceived to be insulting, as Kanyes talk was.
I don't care about what either of them have said or done prior to last weekend, or since.
When I asked random strangers about eother show, I got a "that was amazing" or "I hate I missed it" when I asked about Saturday's show.
When I asked about fridays headliner the comments were "it was good, but...." or "I can't believe the crap he said"
Now I know that the kanye fans are about as loyal as the mob to Yeezus, and he can do no wrong. That said, from what I've read, seen, and heard, jack white put on a far better bonnaroo show then Kanye.

Yeah, Jack started at 2 hours, went down to 90 minutes and then back up to 2 hours right before the festival.
You know what Jack White and Kanye West have in common, they're both extravagant, make great music and do whatever the hell they want. Bonnaroo was treated to two extremes of that on Friday and Saturday night. It's as simple as that.

For what it's worth, I was standing in the EXACT same spot for both sets (directly in front of the sound booth on the left side...I see you Kim K!), and loved both, though I'm of the belief that Jack's was much better. I'm a fan of both artists (Jack moreso than Kanye), but I though Jack just burned the stage to the ground.
I could tell that if I weren't that close I definitely would not have enjoyed Kanye as much, due to his performing almost exclusively in silhouette and not really using the video boards.
Bottom line, both put on amazing shows (from my perspective and of my opinion), but Jack's was the show that I've been telling friends/co-workers about all week.
Anyone who was offended by what Kanye was saying wasn't paying attention.
Honestly, I wanted to pay attention, but it was hard for me to follow. I'm sure I can find a video of it somewhere and hope I do, because I want to hear what the fans apparently heard that I didn't.
Kanye ending 10 minutes early made it easier for people to get over to late night tent's without having to miss too much, I wasn't mad in the least about it.
The fact that news outlets and posters keep saying he came out 20-30 minutes late, when it was 7 minutes, bothers me. At least half the sets that weekend started 5-10 minutes late.

It could be, from other posters I read, they honestly didn't know he started yet.
Someone in the Yeezus thread had mentioned that, because the side monitors weren't on, he didn't even know the concert had started yet. I think he realized it about 10 mintues in. Said he saw some guy jumping around on stage and realized it was Kanye

I clocked it at 8 minutes but whatevs. I actually felt like I needed to do it because I knew his arrival time would be an issue regardless of whoever else was late throughout the weekend.

They didn't realize it when they heard a Kanye West song start playing, with live vocals....?
I was pleasantly surprised when I realized he had actually started on time. I give everyone a solid 10 minutes at Roo before I consider them to be late.

No he thought it was a background track they were playing before the show really started.

I honest to god was completely confused as to what was going on and could hear no vocals.

that's the best one I've heard. If you didn't know that he was on the stage, then I don't know what to say. It's baffling

How did Bonnaroo fuck up the sound so bad, where were you sitting? The more I hear about this, the more I think the sound people at Kanye are the main reason those further away just couldn't enjoy it.
One thing I feel I need to mention is, Kanye went into this forgetting one very important thing. He was playing to a Bonnaroo crowd. Not a crowd that came only to see him. And whether he wanted to admit it or not there was a number of people that only have the 08 show as a reference point. Maybe toning down his "everyone look at me" speeches would've made a world of difference.
On the opposite end...Jack White has been to multiple Bonnaroo's and has never had a shit show of a performance. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was at them, and I had a blast.

As I stated in the Jack White thread, I enjoyed both sets immensely for different reasons. I've been going back and forth on what my favorite set at Bonnaroo was, and I think I'm leaning Kanye for one reason: his set was the best art performance I saw all weekend.
Think about it, his performance, rants, decisions about presenting the performance, the whole package has caused more discussion than any other concert I've been to, period. These conversations have covered topics of race, vibes, concert etiquette, prejudice, expectations, and dozens of other things. That, to me, outweighs almost any value that straight up good vibes for 2.5 hours could ever give me. I have given as much thought to Kanye's performance as I have to some literature and fine art. Again, that's something I've never done with any other performance I've seen other than maybe Neil Young. And that's not to say I didn't simply enjoy the show while it was happening. I had an overflow of good vibes, but I also had a really good spot and was surrounded by enthusiastic fans. That said, capital A Art doesn't have to be enjoyable. That's why so many people hate Modern Art.
I also love that Kanye has exposed some of the haters (not naming any names here) to be even more delusional than he is accused of being. That's golden.
On a final note, Jack White was the only one of the two that made me slightly irritated. Him taking the stage 15 minutes later than advertised and then diving into an extended set prevented me from seeing over half of Nick Cave's set, missing my most looked forward to song Jubilee Street. I wasn't too upset for long, though, because I'm an adult and realize I'm responsible for my own decisions. If I thought my time would be better served elsewhere, I could have simply left early, which is a level of decision making seemingly lost on some the the Kanye haters.
Also, is it not common for hip-hop acts to stop/restart tracks during a set?
It is common. I never understand the complaints when people say "They didn't play the full song" or "They stopped the track before starting it back up" because that's to be expected at hip hop shows. Personally, it'd be weird if they played full songs that had verses and choruses from other rappers that weren't there. Can you imagine Kanye playing Monster and just dancing around while the other 3 verses are played over the speakers?

I was pretty far back, which is my own fault, but it was no further back than I was for Elton who I could hear fine. Basically I thought some sort of sound check was going on.
