Also, is it not common for hip-hop acts to stop/restart tracks during a set?
It is common. I never understand the complaints when people say "They didn't play the full song" or "They stopped the track before starting it back up" because that's to be expected at hip hop shows. Personally, it'd be weird if they played full songs that had verses and choruses from other rappers that weren't there. Can you imagine Kanye playing Monster and just dancing around while the other 3 verses are played over the speakers?
I'm not familiar enough with hip-hop shows to know that was a common thing in the genre. Makes it a little more acceptable to me knowing that.
Anyone who was offended by what Kanye was saying wasn't paying attention.
Honestly, I wanted to pay attention, but it was hard for me to follow. I'm sure I can find a video of it somewhere and hope I do, because I want to hear what the fans apparently heard that I didn't.
This covers the rants and performance pretty well. Good quality too. I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more attention. I thought the analysis of the show was well done (there were some haters but Kanye put on a good show that was way better than his '08 Roo set).
The main lesson I'm taking away from this weekend is that if I want to enjoy a headliner, I need to dedicate the time to get a good spot. Elton John was disappointing to me, pretty much only because of where I was standing. The crowd and enthusiasm really does taper off the further back you go, and it's hard to enjoy a show where everyone around you is just meh about it.
We're all playing nice right now. I like that. Both sets were awesome (for me) but my allegiance lies with one If I have to choose. The only thing I would choose over Kanye at Bonnaroo this year would be the Amish donut, I highly underestimated those things. I'm having withdrawals.

Yea, it took me by surprise when I first started to attend hip hop shows but then it just makes sense when you think about it. Songs that feature guest appearances just can't always be played in full but the fans of that artist want to hear that song so they play what they can and cut out the other verses.
Also, the start-stop thing is similar to a comedian or rock act stopping their playing and asking for more cheers/excitement from the crowd. The "I can't hear you!?!?! Do you want me to play this song??!?!?!" type of stuff. It's just done in a way that feels a bit different because they stop the music completely as opposed to just talking over the backing band who jam a bit to fill time while the lead singer speaks.

Lauryn Hill had no problem doing Wycleff and Pras's parts. no problem at all
Honestly now that I think about it my biggest complaint about the Kanye show is that he didn't let the outro with frank ocean play out during new slaves. That's my favorite part!

Damn dude. I didn't know you felt that way. Sounds like that set was garbage after all.

If he brought out Frank Ocean and Pusha T that would have really put the show over the top and been an awesome moment(s).

I thought for sure that Pusha T would happen. Just another example of why a person shouldn't get their hopes up about celebrity guest stars. So many that were guessed this year didn't happen.
Jack didn't start late. He started at the time that was on the screen, which was 10:45-12:15. He played till 1. Kanye was given 2 hr and barely used an hr and a half as far as I can tell.
One thing I feel I need to mention is, Kanye went into this forgetting one very important thing. He was playing to a Bonnaroo crowd. Not a crowd that came only to see him. And whether he wanted to admit it or not there was a number of people that only have the 08 show as a reference point. Maybe toning down his "everyone look at me" speeches would've made a world of difference. Just a thought.
It was evident he remembered 08 and had things to vent regarding what happened. It is reasonable that a performer should have a set for festivals and a set for shows featuring them and opening acts if only due to the amount of time they are allowed.
I respect artist who make a set list based on how they want to present their music and that the fan should be the one forced to change their opinion or expectation to understand how the artist views their own material, instead of I didn't get "Gold Digger" or "Flashing Lights" so screw Kanye because that is what I wanted to hear. (I'm not directing that at you, but I've seen it mentioned by others a few times.) It's one of the reasons I have enjoyed buying albums on vinyl so much. I have over 200 Spotify playlists for individual artists and there I can choose the order and type of songs I wish the artist would play where the album forces you to listen to the music in the order the performer wanted. I think there are merits to both ways.
Also, the thinking that an artist should understand Bonnaroo is a different venue and the artist should accommodate the audience is strange to me. Obviously there are artists who know a lot about Bonnaroo or consider it one of their favorite places to play but I certainly understand when they view Bonnaroo as another stop on the tour. If I were in a band I don't think any festival in Europe would force my imaginary band to do anything special. I wouldn't be surprised if groups in Europe think of Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lolla, Sasquatch, Gov Ball, and Outside Lands the way I think of Pukklepop, Fuji Rock, Reading and Leeds, or Sonar. I know they are big deals but I don't know what makes each one unique.
not saying it's a should or shouldn't kind of deal for everyone. I'm saying, if Kanye didn't go into this Bonnaroo with last bonnaroo at the forefront of his brain, then we have bigger ego problems than we thought.
I mean, come on, he was his own catch phrase for the past 6 years.
I've seen 3 hour Macca shows and 2 hour Waters/Stones shows - the length of Macca's set didn't make it anymore impressive
You don't think a 71 yr old man at the time coming out and playing 38 songs over 3 hours wasn't impressive??? I understand your point is that 2 hours vs 3 hours wouldn't have made a ton of difference but this was the last 1/3rd of his set listed below. These 13 songs really wasn't necessary in your opinion?? C'mon.
Back in the U.S.S.R. Let It Be Live and Let Die Hey Jude
Encore: Day Tripper Hi, Hi, Hi Get Back
Encore 2: Yesterday Helter Skelter
Encore 3: Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End
I've seen Macca 5 times dude. Wasn't even referring to that set.
edit: The Beatles are my all time favorite act so obviously it was impressive. But was it anymore impressive than seeing Roger - Darkside or The Stones - 40 licks? Absolutely not.

And for the record, I heard Jack White fans say they weren't a fan of Jack White's set. But again, that means nothing in an argument like this.
Reporting in. I'm a huge Jack White fan, and was really looking forward to his set and hyping it up to my friends all weekend. I thought it was solid, but not great, and easily the worst of the three JW sets I've seen (one White Stripes, one on his last tour, and one at Roo). He talked too much, was a little pitchy, I didn't like the sound mix, and he played mostly slow-to-midtempo songs, aside from Hotel Yorba. I might elaborate more later, but those were my issues in a nutshell.
Yes, I know 'he talked too much' sounds hypocritical from a Kanye West fan, but I expect Kanye to talk/rant at his shows and would be disappointed if he didn't. It felt weird coming from Jack White though, who said no more than ten words the first time I saw him and not much more the second time.
Also--am I the only person that didn't buy his bullshit Southern accent and 'Tennessee, I know you!' bit? Most of us aren't from TN, and you're from Detroit, Jack. I get what you're going for, but it's weird.

He did start late because he was on the schedule for 10:30. I remember because I got to my spot well before 10:30 and when it was almost 10:30 they flashed on the screen that it was now 10:45 and I laughed to myself that it would be like the Kanye 2008 thing where in a few minutes it would say "Jack White 11:00-" and all that. I was annoyed because it was supposed to be 10:30-12:30 with Nick Cave starting right at 12:30 but then they pushed it back and I Got nervous about missing Nick Cave. I even made a tweet about it while standing in the field waiting for him:
He started when the screen said he would but he wasn't originally scheduled for 10:45. So it was a schedule change but a schedule change that took place at the very last minute.

Oh, and quack the schedule changes. I don't know what was going on, but it made Saturday night confusing and difficult.
Yea, this year was worse than most years in terms of "last minute changes" that couldn't be figured out before the schedules were printed. The comedy tent got all screwed up and a bunch of people had no idea about the Frank Ocean/Skrillex changes. Lots of scrambling with the schedule this year.
Does Jack White not start late because a screen flashes at the venue itself saying he's going to be 15 minutes later?

Didn't they also move his set right before Bonnaroo, and shorten it, only for him to play much longer? I'm not criticizing him for all this, but that's really frustrating.

Yea it bounced around a few times. I posted somewhere that I thought they changed it from 2 hours to 1.5 hours so that when he plays 2 hours it seems like a bigger deal. I never thought we'd get as long of a set as we did (and I made fun of people saying we could get a 3-hour JW set) but them changing up the length of timeslot a bit definitely happened.
I'm so happy I was wrong that he played as long as he did. Never expected that.
