Can a guitar riff not have emotional ferocity? For me, music speaks more than lyrics. A song without words can express all the same things that all of those songs you just mentioned. I will just have to respectfully disagree with you. I'm sure all those songs do illicit a lot of emotions for some people. Sometimes I feel like we listen so much to the lyrics of a song and we kind of forget about the music. This is why umph will always be one of my favorite bands. They can give you an array of emotions without saying a word. I guess I kind of got a little off topic there lol sorry
I agree with you that music can speak more than lyrics. That's why Hannah Hunt means a lot to me even though its lyrics don't directly apply. It's why my favorite part in all of Yeezus is just Frank Ocean singing the barely recognizable lyrics "I can't lose, I can't lose" to soaring music and the Hungarian lyrics that follow it. Shit, I have basically no concept of the racial drama that pervades all of that album, but I love it because the music hits that emotional point for me.
I don't mean to diss Jack White, he's probably taught me more about guitar and about the artistic process than anyone out there. I've benefited so much from having him as an influence in my life. It just wasn't a killer set for me. Part of that's that he never came close to hitting me in the gut, and he only got me to move my body once or twice.
Edit: also I will disregard anyone who claims Kanye's rants were longer until I get a recording of one of his rants that's longer than Jack White's Steady As She Goes bit of crowd talk, which at three minutes is longer than any Kanye rant recording I've heard so far. And uh I'm still surprised at how many people didn't see Jack White's crowd talk as affected and phony but on that front I'm repeating myself
Yeah but like that thread this is also an easy answer. Team Kanye and Waffles.
If you didn't just remind me how you are #teambaelish, I would have had you killed for this.
"Always keep your foes confused. If they are never certain who you are or what you want, they cannot know what you are like to do next. Sometimes the best way to baffle them is to make moves that have no purpose, or even seem to work against you. Remember that, Dave, when you come to play the game.”
We're all playing nice right now. I like that. Both sets were awesome (for me) but my allegiance lies with one If I have to choose. The only thing I would choose over Kanye at Bonnaroo this year would be the Amish donut, I highly underestimated those things. I'm having withdrawals.
I have yet to try these Amish Donuts. I did get free Spicy Pie though on Sunday night, it was "meh".... Disc O Pizza is better.

I wasn't as big on the spicy pie two years ago either. But in fairness I think I got one that had been out awhile. I've seen pics from when they're fresh and I'd imagine they'd be a lot better when they are. But as far as Amish donuts go, they're every bit as good as advertised. Pretty much ruined ever other donut for me and It's nearly impossible to explain them to someone who hasn't had them. Pretty much like Bonnaroo in general, you have to experience it yourself to understand.
in all honesty waiting three hours in that mob just to get shut out of the pit while VIPers continually strolled in and out really had me a bit negative when he came out.
I'm sorry :/ , I was one of those who strolled in from the back like 15mins before he started. FWIW, I had no idea about this mob thing that had happened until I found Jake Jortles and he told me that his little brother had gotten trampled and didn't even make it in the pit. I legit felt bad about being able to stroll in the pits like I could all weekend. At Disclosure the pit entrance on the GA side was a mad house. It was so bad that people wouldn't even let people out of the pit so that more could get in. I got pushed up against the fence in a very uncomfortable way, pretty sure this is when I dropped my phone and whiskey.... My point being that on a small scale that Disclosure pit situation was really scary, I can't imagine what it was like for Kanye.
Also, to actually stay on topic a bit, I thoroughly enjoyed Kanye's show. But I went into it with very few expectations. I actually thought he was going to rant and rave and play nothing but Yeezus in its entirety then walk off stage after telling us to go fuck ourselves. I felt the show was super high energy and I had a blast jumping, dancing, and singing along.
I didn't see Jack White. Partly because I'm not a fan, partly because I was tired and wanted to nap instead (didn't happen), and partly because I can see him at Forecastle. I heard that the show was great, everyone who went had only positive things to say. But honestly, I just prefer Kanye over JW anyways...

Don't feel bad. You guys paid extra for that privilege!
This Bonnaroo was a tide turner for me. I came into it expecting to be blown away by Kanye, and I felt like my expectations were way, way too high. College Dropout was (and is) my favorite album of all time. Yeezus was one of my favorite albums of last year. I consider him to be the most influential artist of my generation. I love his energy, his passion, his dedication to his music, and yes, his egomania as well. Leading up to his set, I was thinking I would be leaving in awe.
What a fucking letdown.
I'm going to try really, really hard to separate the NIGHTMARE that was the pit line from my evaluation of his set, but in all honesty waiting three hours in that mob just to get shut out of the pit while VIPers continually strolled in and out really had me a bit negative when he came out. But I tried, I really did. Like I said, I had been crazily anticipating this night, and really wanted to get into his performance - but I just couldn't. First off - and I think I might be one of the view to mention this (I haven't read this entire thread) - the sound just sounded wrong to me. Not so much on his Yeezus tracks, as I know they're meant to sound abrasive, but his other, smoother-sounding tracks sounded very fuzzy, and the bass seemed off as well. Sonically, it just didn't do it for me. Second, WHAT THE FUCK WITH THE SCREENS?! I had to continually crane my neck to see this little man run around on stage, because for whatever reason someone decided having the audience being unable to see the show would be a good idea. I mean, I know it's hard to be humble when you're stuntin' on a jumbotron, but for Chrissakes at least STUNT ON THAT MOTHERFUCKER. Third, I was so, so taken out of the show every time he would stop a song just to talk some more. I get that he's gonna rant between songs, but don't stop the fucking song to do it. Halfway through I really just wanted him to STFU and playing some music. The song teases weren't getting me hyped, they were pissing me off. That shit is fucking ridiculous; I was so appalled. I went into this show fully knowing this is Kanye in Kanye World and he's going to do Kanye Shit because it's The Kanye Show, but I left really feeling like a fool for thinking that as a fan, I would be a part of that. But now, I know I'm not. I'm a spectator on the sidelines, watching a lonely genius scribble on the walls of his padded room. I'll still enjoy his music, but that's a feeling I'm not going to forget.
Now Jack White, on the other hand...
Easily my favorite show of the weekend, even though I missed the first part of it (I came in during Blunderbuss). When the lineup dropped, he was probably the person I was most excited for, though as the weeks went on and his album dropped, I was closer to "meh" about him. Still excited, but I wasn't going crazy for him any more. His energy during his set was palpable. I experienced him both from in the back of the What field and in the pit, and the entire time he was killing it. This electric maverick rocked that stage like I have never seen a person do before. Yes, he talked some in between songs, but he kept it relatively brief and then kept on rockin'. And unlike Ye, he actually - and admittedly I think this is a bit rare for Jack as well as Ye - seemed humble. He knows that he's an artist up there doing his job, and he was very cognizant that headlining Bonnaroo is a Big Fucking Deal, so he wanted to do his job well. He made it special, and it showed.
And that fucking encore. I have no words - if you were there, you know.
They both have big egos. I get that. I think the difference is that Kanye thinks he's a god and screams it at the top of his lungs, and Jack thinks he's a god and just judges everyone else from Up On High.
Jack White put on one of the best musical performances I have ever seen last weekend. Kanye put on one of the most disappointing.
Hashtag teamjackwhite.
I'm curious about what your experience would have been at Kanye had you gotten in the pit comfortably. Maybe you would be saying the same thing, but I often find that my mood can ruin a show for me. All those annoyances you mention about the show seem like things I didn't even notice because I was so happy to finally be see him live. Seriously the more I think about that show the more I realize how much I enjoyed it. Only thing that could have made it better is some better shoes because I was standing in mud for 6 hrs.

If you're going to a venue that holds 70000, and only the front 10 thought it was a good show, you're doing something bad wrong.

I see your point but that's an exaggeration. I was probably 5 rows back from the rail, not in the pit, and everyone around me was enjoying it. But yeah, he could have used the side screens more effectively.
I am not sure if this has been mentioned or not yet but Jack White played a little of Kanye's Black Skinhead last night before High Ball Stepper. Sounds like he put on a great show:

So is this an accurate recap of Kanye's show? I was only on the farm Saturday and Sunday, but Kanye is easily top three acts of all time for me and hasn't ever let down when I've seen him.

Yep, pretty much. The rants were misinterpreted all over the place, and apparently the sound & lack of visuals + the occasional hecklers in the back of the field kind of sucked, but he put on a great show and was smiling and having a great time up there. The crowd participation in the pit was impressive, as well.

Hey guys
Jack White previously expressed his affinity for Kanye West and his latest album, Yeezus, which might explain why he and his band chose to open their show in Dublin with a cover of “Black Skinhead”. Similar to his cover of “Enter Sandman”, the performance was strictly an instrumental and much too short, but still cool nonetheless. Watch fan-shot footage below; the “Black Skinhead” bit is right at the beginning. He eventually segues into “High Ball Stepper”.
Hopefully this will catch Kanye’s attention and he’ll finally return Jack’s call.
