So, I never paid this thread any attention because Buku reminded me of that Japanese thing with the stuff on the chick's face (you know what I'm talking about!) and now I'm sad bc this was an awesome lineup, I'm free this weekend, and nawlins isn't too far away. It's completely sold out or I would be driving there right now. SO YALL HAVE FUN!!!! I'm so jealous!! lol
Pretty incredible Day 1. Let me first say that nothing remotely touches GRiZ aftershow. It was a 10 out of 10. He had 6 people out of Pres Hall Brass and 3 harmonizing singers up on stage in a brass/horn/funk mashup for the first half of the set. it was fucking outrageous and just one of those shows that comes around every now and then that a music fan lives for.
For the fest itself, I started out at Freedia. It was the usual fun show. Then I went and saw Mr. Carmack. The set was good, but for some reason it wasn't tha loud. We wandered a little after that and ended up catching some of Robert Delong who was decent. After that was a solid Tribe set. It wasn't anything special, but they did a nice 20 minute version of World Go Round.
After Tribe, we headed over to Run the Jewels who was fun as shit. After that show I went and watched the first half of A$AP Rocky. That was great. Then I headed over to watch the whole Portugal. The Man set. They were fucking great.
I went over to the Float Den to watch Flosstradamus, then went over to Boosie Badazz before heading back to the end of Floss. A lot of people thought Boosie was the best show of the festival itself. Finally ended up at Gramatik to close the night before hitting GRiZ. Gramatik was probably my favorite set at the fest, straight up A for Day1. Oh and the free liquor, in my case whiskey, is Wild Turkey 101. You know I got my money's worth.
Saturday was another good Buku day. I started off with a few minutes of Slander which was about what you'd expect from them. I went over to Raury who was better than I expected. I thought his band was pretty tight as well. Fly was the highlight along with a couple of raps. I ducked down into the boat to catch a little of Gravity A Talking Heads. They were playing Road to Nowhere. I just saw them last week, so I went back to catch the end of Raury. Next was TV on the Radio/Ghostface conflict. I started at TV since they started a few minutes earlier. I was digging the set a lot but I had to jet to get some Ghostface. You know Ghostface wasn't nothing to fuck with. That was probably my top set of the day. Then I went back to catch the end of TV. I'm very much looking forward to seeing them at Hangout. Next I went to some of Odezsa and DJ Win 98. Both sounded good but were nothing special to me. I was going to see some of Borgore; but one of my friends wanted to go see Lil B, so we went over there. I have to say that he was way better than I was expecting. After that I went to Bassnectar, Hudson Mohawke and Porter live. All three shows were great. I probably should have eaten more and drank less because I ended up crashing at home and giving someone my STS9 ticket. Word on that show was that it was super great and probably would have been top 1.
Overall, the value for VIP was up there. They had some lines at the bar, but they were moving. Main stage view spot was awesome as was float den's. The boat is a really nice touch and a great chill spot. Booze was high end in vip so that was cool. Overall, I'm going to have to give Buku an A for the fest. Top shows:
1. GRiZ[ featuring Preservation Hall 2. Ghostface with badbadnotgood 3. Gramatik 4. Portugal. The Man 4. TV on the Radio 5. Boosie Badass 6. Run tge jewels 7. Bassnectar 8. A$AP Rocky 9. Tribe
Seriously, I want a full detailed report on his show from someone
So going off the top of my head....I forget what he opened with. But it was just him on stage, with his DJ hiding somewhere else. He did the Grove St. Party song from Lil Wayne's mixtape and everyone went crazy. Lots of shouting out to New Orleans artists like Mack Maine, Juvenile, Boosie, Lil Wayne, Birdman (a couple people booed lol). Huge mosh pit halfway through the set (RIP to the plur kids not expecting that). He played a lot of other people's music (all New Orleans artists). He didn't do Like a Martian . He was going to play I Love You to end the set but he told the DJ to change it, and the DJ I guess just messing with him kept on playing it. Wonton Soup I think was his last song. I walked out towards the end of that song to meet my friends for Bassnectar because Lil B was starting to go over time.
I was in the middle on the rail and I thought it was the best thing ever. But then I gave it up to go turn up, mosh, and cook with the crowd. The only weird part was there seemed to be a few people that just liked him for his music and didn't care much about his philosophy. That was weird.

Man that sounds so fucking great. I really hope I get the chance to see him soon. So awesome that you got to see him

it was a top five show of the weekend for sure. first off, he was the ONLY thing onstage and it worked so well. the crowd was uber fun to be in, such a fun mosh pit. he kept shouting things like "hands up if youre a real person!" and "make some noise if youre happy to be alive!", just a super positive show. everyone was dancing the entire time. he shouted out some really specific new orleans stuff which was cool (Shouts out mcdonough!). when he did Ellen DeGeneres, I completely lost it. completely shattered my expectations. I didn't super consider myself a fan before the show, but afterwards I definitely am. Don't miss the opportunity to see him if you can

Yo Salads, what else you got on the weekend? I'm also looking forward to hearing from Vieux and Krisplettuce over their experiences. Overall, I was glad to get a buttload of rap in since most of the festivals I'm going to next are light on rap (Jazzfest, Hangout, Waka and Bonnaroo). I came away from the weekend feeling like Buku (as a festival) is really coming into its own. This wasn't my favorite lineup of the past 3 years, but it was probably the best experience of the 3 I've gone to (out of the 4 they've had). The VIP is mandatory for me going forward. The pre-sale at $299.99+dickfees was worth every penny, and the 9 or 10 other people I was there with (only one had VIP) all knew it. To a person, they all said they'd be doing VIP in the future after seeing the perks. I mean, when you could walk up to the front of the stage, go chill on the boat, go pickup a free double Wild Turkey 101 and 7up on the fly for the next set, things are working properly.
I found the crowd this year to be less douchey than in some of the past years. There were bros around to be sure, but everyone seemed pretty well behaved. I was all over the place, and I didn't see any fights. I saw a few people leaving on stretchers (including one guy who had a busted up face and chin - looked like he fell onto concrete or something???? But it seemed like more of a college age (20-30) crowd than in years past. Specifically in 2013, the age was 16 to get in. By eliminating the 16 and 17 year olds, you really have seen a decline in people dropping off throughout the day/night. Also, maybe the spectacular weather had something to do with it, but I found people to be in really good moods both Friday and Saturday. People were just smiling everywhere having a bang up time. It was a treat to meet Raury's mom and aunt as well as some of their friends for the Raury set. He gave his mom a shout out, and I had met them earlier on the boat. She is very proud of what her son is doing. I talked to her a little about how my daughter and I both really appreciate him saying some things that need to be said in a way that a lot of other people aren't doing. I didn't see any celebrities out this year, but one of my kids ran into Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights) on Saturday, and another ran into GRiZ at the festival on Friday. I really hope that someone videoed and will put on YouTube some of the Griz w/ Preservation Hall set. It was so, so good and funky. They did a nice job keeping the venue clean all weekend. There were very short lines at the bars and food vendors. And any of us who have been to more than one festival know to go to the back to get easy bathroom access. That trick alone allowed you to pretty much walk right up to a port-of-john. The one clusterf*ck was their "Front Lawn" area which got pounded by rain all week and was a slop pit. I wandered over there Friday, but I didn't go back that way on Saturday since I knew it was still going to be muck. My biggest bitch, and I'll email them about it, was that they had no iced coffee this year. Since Monster is a sponsor, you didn't have red bull either, so it put me (and others who rely on caffeine to be able to properly rock shit up) in a tough bind where I had to sip an occasional bit of monster. It's the one energy drink that crashes me, so I didn't get to intake enough. Other than that, it remains a funky good time. Buku prides themselves on delivering a "big festival punch" when they are a smaller, boutique festival. What I thought was cool, and this relates both to the VIP experience on the boat and the sold out GRiZ show I went to Friday night (and the report I got on STS9 Saturday), was that they completely didn't oversell. So you had room to do what you wanted. You were never on top of anyone else unless you wanted to be in the middle of the crowd or whatever.
Oh yeah - hit Fireman Mike's twice over the weekend for chicken and jambalaya. Both plates were very good, and I could have used more. Also, I don't know if anyone else did an audition for Bud Light Whatever USA, but they were auditioning for whatever party they are throwing this year (told me they flew 1,000 people to Colorado last year for a concert/party). I had a few in me and wasn't afraid to give it a go. I threw in GRiZ and Bassnectar as the question was what 2 people from Buku would you want to see at Whatever USA. You didn't really have time to think, and this was a few minutes before TV on the Radio/Ghostface conflict hour. So I went with what popped into my head at the time. Hopefully they will be amused by my drunk ass telling them that old guy can still hang, so they know they want to invite me. I'm hoping for maybe Miami or Puerto Rico this year if they do pick me .
I will most definitely do a breakdown of my weekend, just trying to catch up from no internet last week, and recover from the weekend. When I get a break, I will be on it.

Awesome getting to share hugs with you at sts9!
Agreed! Wish I could have made it back to y'all but it got PACKED! More hugs at bonnaroo!!
Overall, id say this was the best buku ive been to (out of '13,'14 and '15). Friday was nonstop hard hitting shows from 330 until the die antwoord debacle. Carmack was the perfect way to start off the weekend (about 20 minutes in he stopped and said "alright, how'd yall like my soundcheck?"). my favorite crowd of the weekend. and then from there I headed to Pell who put on an energetic show and the crowd was grooving to it. The crowd for Lean wasn't as big as I expected so my group and I held a killer spot like 3 deep from the railing in center for that show. He surpassed expectations and i got to hit the blunt he passed to my friend on the railing! Also very funny when he fell haha. then Run the jewels, in the same spot. They were by far the best rap act of the weekend, if not the best overall. their pure excitement and happiness to be there was clear. Killer Mike is such a performer. eye contact with mike during his last bars on Run the Jewels was awe inspiring. From there we headed to the first few songs of ASAP which we caught from the water fill up line (actually not that bad, everyone there was dancing and having fun). This was probably the most crowded i felt all weekend. On to RL Grime after that, with an incredible opening run. I definitely crashed hard during that set, but from what I was able to enjoy myself during, I loved it. Chilled out for a good bit of time by the river (missed empire of the sun, o well) then into Floss who KILLED IT. such a hype show as expected. We had a good bit of room right at the third support beam on the right and lots of room to dance. Tried to hold it down there throughout die antwoord, but once the sound cut out i feel like they never got it back, so i headed to check out gramatik which was wayy crowded, but i enjoyed what i saw. ended the night sitting in back of the float den under one of the fans behind two dudes spinning some cool fiberglass light strings??
Saturday was even better for me, personally. Got in around 530 and caught some of XXYYXX. Headed from there to TVOTR, but was only able to catch the first three or so songs before heading to ghostface. It was hard to leave for sure. Highlights of ghostface were The World is Yours and I Want You Back. Left there to get a spot for ODESZA which was uber crowded. Was not expecting that to be the most crowded show of the weekend. ODESZA was either my top or second best show of the weekend. Totally amazing, their music has a whole new meaning to me now. I apologize for anyone next to me and my friends tho, most people around us were complaining about the “drunk highschoolers” but we were just very happy to be there haha. Danced very hard and signed this guy’s shirt who we called Shaun White. From there we hit passion pit, directly next to the soundboard on the right and had a beautiful show. Peak of the night for sure, their lights were on point. From there on the night was high speed. Lil b (mind blowing, changed my life a lil bit), then back to nectar who killed it, and then into hudmo. Hudmo was an interesting show. Probably a terrible show for the g eazy fans waiting out there, but me and my group absolutlely loved it. Got yelled at a lot for bumping and jumping around, but in my opinion that’s what you’ve gotta do at hudmo. His a milli flip was the best of the weekend, very live. After that I ended my weekend with Justin Martin and Eats Everything on the back alley and regret absolutely nothing. Very lit show, they were getting very drunk and brought a lot of engery. They rocked like 25 minutes past their scheduled time and I was still able to catch porters last song. Thanks to everyone who made this weekend incredible.
also, did anyone else notice that saturday felt a lot less crowded overall? ASAP's crowd vs nectars was super hectic.
Party was on huh? Haha. 100% of us were drunk high schoolers at some point too. As long as people aren't hurling in the crowd or dropping, it doesn't bother me. I'm glad to hear your opinion of Floss. I got dragged out kicking and screaming - well at least slightly protesting - for Boosie. Both of my oldest insisted, and I'm absolutely glad I went. But then I forced an end around back in for the end. They sounded really great to me too. That set, not being able to see all of TV on the Radio, and missing RL are probably my only regrets. But you already know that Buku is notorious for night conflicts. I'll confirm Gramatik. I had that #1 set for me on Friday. Definitely missing the energy and excitement from Friday and Saturday.
and did you catch odesza's last song? sounded just like an almost reversed version of "tell me" but damn if it wasnt the best drop of the weekend. this is it from another venue.
how was boosie? i had a friend go and she said it was beyond ratchet but totally fun
Man that sounds so fucking great. I really hope I get the chance to see him soon. So awesome that you got to see him

Oh my gosh just remembering how crazy I went during Ellen DeGeneres. That was the moment where I think I was like time to turn up for real

and I only saw the first half of Boosie before going over to Flosstradomus but the energy in there was through the roof. Everyone from the front to the very very back was so into it. I regret not being a much bigger Boosie fan

No, I missed the end when we went to catch some of Windows 98. Boosie was awesome. Yeah, it was ratchet as fuck. Crowd was on it singing along the whole show. He had a bunch of people on stage, and it was very raucous and high energy. people were getting down, and it was packed and hot in the ballroom for that set.
This was my first time going to Buku and it was definitely one of the best festival experiences I have ever had. Living in Atlanta with so many festivals near by it's kind of hard to get me to drive out of state for a music festival unless it's Bonnaroo (which is only 3 hours away). But it was so worth the trip. I really loved the stages and how they each had their own vibe to them. I also loved how at every stage, it didn't matter if you were all the way in the front or the back, it was still a really great time. Sometimes at other festivals like Bonnaroo for example, if I'm outside the tent or on the wrong side of the Which Stage, it's really hard to get into. I never had this problem at Buku, except maybe when I arrived at Bassnectar late by myself and just didn't know what to do with myself. But that was just more of a personal problem.
I started off exploring the stages Friday and caught the second half of Robert Delong. He was very entertaining live. Then I stuck at the front of the stage for STS9 and ASAP. I'm a pretty big ASAP fan so not being at the front for him was not an option. STS9 was solid but not mind blowing. My enjoyment of that show really just came from the vibes of the people around me. Then the entire ASAP Mob (except Ferg) stormed the stage like they were G Unit or something. Opening up with Hella Hoes really set the tone. I was really surprised and happy to see the entire mob there since last time at Bonnaroo he only had Twelvy as a hypeman, and Ferg as a surprise guest. I was really waiting for those mosh pits to start up considering how intense his show was at Bonnaroo. This show was like a 7 and Bonnaroo was like a 20 as far as craziness. This one poor guy was told to settle down by another guy at the beginning....that's like the last thing you need to be doing at an ASAP show. I just swooped in an attempt to save that guy's vibe from being killed. Finally when he did Wild For the Night and gave the crowd permission to start up that mosh pit everything was just right. After ASAP I chilled for a bit and went back to see Empire of the Sun which was magical af. I was originally going to see Flosstradamus with my group but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Boosie. I also met a bunch of really cool girls that said they were going to see Boosie, so it really just felt like that would be the place for me to be. So I split up Boosie and Floss which turned out to be a fantastic decision (except I missed Original Don but oh well). Then worked my way up for Die Antwoord which ended up being my favorite set of the weekend. Even when their sound when out, I was too happy to really care. They came back and that's all that mattered to me.
Saturday was just all about being Based for me. Started off seeing Raury who absolutely killed it. Actually forgot to see XXYYXX which I now really regret....first time I ever just straight up forgot to see something I wanted to check out. But I was up front for BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah through Lil B at the Ballroom Stage. Ghostface was pretty sick. Highlights being him covering the World is Yours, and ODB. DJ Windows 98 (Win Butler of Arcade Fire) was good....I just had no idea he did mostly African music. When he came up and was like "hi my name is Calvin Harris" I was the only person who thought that was funny. I freaked out when did Super Rich Kids towards the end. Then he just straight up threw the microphone into the crowd at the end while it was still on. Lil B was excellent. I think I'm the only person though who just had insane expectations for Lil B. Everyone was pretty blown away but after watching his shows at Pitchfork and Coachella it was basically what I expected. I dropped my phone in the moshpit but somebody found it and it was completely undamaged TYBG. After Lil B though I had a major comedown, I couldn't find my friends for Bassnectar, and I didn't really know what to do with myself so I just left to chill out for a bit. But it's amazing how much going to see ILoveMakonnen picked me right back up. I'm a pretty big ILoveMakonnen fan, he's just like an evolved new wave version of Lil B. He doesn't take himself too seriously and is a lot of fun. Me and like 5 other people I met just had the time of our lives at that show. I really did not care that most of the crowd just wanted to hear Tuesday, nobody could take away the joy I felt at that show. Then I finally met up with my group and we ended on an epic set from Porter Robinson.
I regret not being able to enjoy Bassnectar....now I'm kind of hoping there aren't any big conflicts at Bonnaroo for his set. If the lineup is as good next year I will definitely be coming back and hopefully going to some after parties since I missed out on that this year.
Very nice based. Buku is really underrated in my opinion. They have not failed to deliver quality any of the years I've gone. Discovering the value of VIP this year was giant for me. It was always fun, and if you look at 2013 and 2014, there is outrageous shit on those lineups. To me it is a very unique experience, and people are usually jacked the fuck up, including me. But the VIP perks were outstanding for the presale price. I'm never not doing that again for Buku. It was like they were handing me fun on a silver platter. It's really it's own thing in the festival world.
Let me ask you if you agree with this though. Some people think they should make it a 3 day. I just feel like the time the fest runs, all the high energy sets and throwdowns, it's probably better to keep it 2 days.

That's funny you say that because honestly.....after Saturday I was like....I can keep going. I didn't want it to end yet. I wouldn't mind 3 days. You could maybe even eliminate having super huge conflicts by being able to spread out the larger acts to an extra day. If they chose to add an extra day I wouldn't mind.

I definitely didn't want it to end and have been in postpartum ever since Sunday. I think what kicked my ass was going to Snails and Trollphace on Thursday rather than getting a reasonably good night sleep. I got jinxed, because a friend of mine who loves both of them told me he blew it last year by going out all night on Thursday. I could do 3 days, but I'd have to take it a bit more low-key.
