Webster line is already crazy. You wont get in. I might even not
Damn missed the announcement that it was at Webster. Would have tried to make it if I'd known.
I did manage to get into Courtney Barnett though and this was easily the best of the 7 times I've now seen her. Her and her band's energy, and even more so the crowd's energy, just made for a stellar concert.
On the cancellation, I think the real issue is the venue and maybe it's time Gov Ball starts thinking about relocating again.

That happened. When i got there it was a long but orderly line. Questionable if Id make it but I felt good about my odds.... Then people started just piling into the streets, pushing one another like waiting for the What Stage pit at Roo.. except it was for a whole city block. Got kinda scary. But ah well, worth trying. Got to see Rage at least and that was very dope.

Just got home from Summer Jam. Had no service so I'm catching up on all that went down tonight.
Summer Jam started off awesome with that GOOD Music set. Kanye came out and probably did like 4 songs. But then the show went really downhill. I left at 1am and they still had Future and DJ Khaled left to perform. Was falling asleep.
Seriously.... is there any possible way Kanye could just perform at Governor's ball tomorrow? Like could they use the stage assuming it hasn't been taken down yet.....
It would make way too much sense if you ask me. That was complete chaos out there.

Expanding a festival another day last minute is nearly impossible considering all the logistics and staff involved.
Must See 2018 List: 1. Drake 2. The Cure 3. David Byrne 4. King Krule 5. Moses Sumney 6. Dua Lipa 7. Mount Kimbie 8. Perfume Genius 9. Yaeji 10. Big Thief
Even if Gov Ball isn't financially done, their public perception may kill them. I'm sure it wasn't mostly their call to cancel, but god damn what a failure yesterday was.

Man how is Gov Ball ever going to recover from a weather cancellation? The reputation hit fests like Lolla, Voo Doo, ACL, ect took after it happened to them left them in ruins.

As disappointing as it was to lose an entire day of music, I'll defend the decision to cancel Day 3 of Gov Ball. In retrospect, it's easy to criticize them for acting prematurely, but it was also the most logical decision based on the information available. Simply put, the risk of strong winds and lightning was too high to put the safety of 60,000 people in jeopardy. Especially after 70+ people were hospitalized due to thunderstorm-related injuries at Rock am Ring on Saturday. I don't think Gov Ball or the city want to be held liable for willingly putting tens of thousands of people in a potentially dangerous situation. And as others have pointed out, an evacuation of 60,000 people off a small island would have been mass chaos.
For those of you saying you will never buy a ticket to this festival before you're absolutely certain of what weather to expect, can I ask if you're willing to do the same for any other festival? I get that Gov Ball has now experienced weather cancellations two of the last four years, but there is a risk of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms at pretty much any festival in the central and eastern U.S. between April and July. It really just comes down to bad luck. A landfalling tropical storm along the mid-Atlantic coast in early June is quite rare. And just for the sake of comparison, the risk of strong thunderstorms in June is not much greater in New York City than in a place like Manchester, TN. Despite the awful heat and humidity, Bonnaroo has been pretty fortunate to avoid strong thunderstorms throughout much of its history.
You guys, it can be both. Canceling Day 3 was probably the right decision and will probably also result in a reputation hit.
True, but I think their reputation is most likely to take the biggest hit among the dingbats who don't understand that the festival was cancelled due to the threat of strong winds and lightning rather than heavy rain. I've seen so many people complaining about how it only rained for an hour yesterday evening, but they clearly didn't take a look at the radar or read the severe weather alerts issued by the NWS. Plus, at least Gov Ball is offering refunds for a day of cancelled music.

Dingbats or not, I don't see how this doesn't significantly lag ticket sales next year. 2 of the last four years have had significant weather issues, there will be obviously more competition next year and it already takes this event a few months to sell out. There will probably be another price hike next year and I have little faith that the LiveNation deal significantly boosts the quality of the lineup as they're still restricted by their own venue.
Maybe the LI/NJ trustfund baby crowd doesn't care, but if I'm traveling from a significant distance would I buy a ticket several months in advance? It's not GovBall's fault, but I wouldn't.

Thunderstorms never happened, but man did it start coming down hard at Summerjam. Around 630 it started POURING and the wind was so strong that it blew out tables and tarps away. we had cars to jump in for shelter and i was still soaked and cold the rest of the night. Can't imagine what that woulda been like at govball with nowhere to find shelter.

I look at it this way, Bonnaroo 2014, the entire week leading up it, the weather forecast showed storms, the Wednesday driving down, it stormed my entire drive down, and by the time we got there, it cleared up and had beautiful weather the entire weekend.
Bonnaroo could potentially be pretty dangerous in a thunderstorm as well, they weren't trying to cancelled it or delay people from coming in....
Do what Summerjam did, postpone it until the storm was supposed to pass, they knew people were there for Kanye, there's no reason they couldn't have just postponed yesterday until 8-9 and see what happens, and still have Kanye come on by 9:30-9:45. It's not like a lot of people paid a lot of money to fly to New York, and pay for a hotel, mainly to see Kanye. SMH.

In 2013 they had the fest during a tropical storm that caused millions in property damage, shut down all Randalls Island events for the summer, and forced people to evacuate via a narrow bridge during torrential downpours.
This years morning cancellation will have zero effect.

Gov Ball was fucking packed this year. I'm having a hard time believing they'll be hurt too much by this. If anything, less people would be great because there was barely any room to breath.

There's a huge difference between thunderstorms hitting the festival grounds a day before the venue opens and thunderstorms coming through during primetime on Sunday evening. I just checked the radar archives, and there were no severe thunderstorm warnings issued anywhere near Manchester between that Wednesday and Sunday in 2014, so your argument doesn't make much sense. And it's not like Gov Ball made some pre-emptive decision to cancel days in advance. They waited until they were confident to make a final call (which was about noon on Sunday). It would've been much more ridiculous if they let tens of thousands of people through the gates, only to have them turn around and be sent back less than an hour later.
As far as the Kanye pop up show went.... I don't see why they couldn't sell tickets online fast and if you didn't get one online you don't get in. Would have prevented a lot of issues.
And I know it can be done. Back in March, Hannibal Burress did a pop up show that was announced at 5PM and he was going up at 8, they sold the tickets through ticket fly. Everything went smoothly.

With all due respect, Hannibal Buress ain't Kanye West.

Also, I am sure the Hannibal Burress show or whatever was a planned pop up show. Kanye at Webster was thrown together at the last min. Kind of hard to hit up a ticket broker at 11 PM on a Sunday night.
I was actually in that madness and it without question could have been handled better. But it was so last second I doubt the security had any idea how insane that was going to get or how to handle it. That mob was pretty scary for a little while there.
