I think the mistake was announcing that it was happening at all. It would've been so much cooler if he just showed up at Webster or BK Bowl or wherever and did a surprise set for the people already there for other shows.
Man how is Gov Ball ever going to recover from a weather cancellation? The reputation hit fests like Lolla, Voo Doo, ACL, ect took after it happened to them left them in ruins.
The difference being that the above festivals don't have an equal competitor going forward.
It's all about perception. Sure, it was reasonable for the Park Service to preemptively cancel. But instead of media coverage about Kanye's triumphant set, the narrative was hijacked by the cancellation, Kanye's guest appearance at Summer Jam, and the subsequent shenanigans at Webster Hall. Now lets imagine that Panorama Festival has a kickass first edition and it becomes the talk of the town as the coolest festival of the summer. It will absolutely make a difference next year, especially given the fact that a shitload of people incurred travel and lodging costs specifically to see Kanye. People will think twice about investing that type of time, money, and energy, regardless of whether a cancellation was justified or not. Look at Electric Zoo's reputation after cancelling the last day two years in a row.

lol if you say so man. I can tell you nobody is concerned or talking about how "they are going to recover from the huge hit to their reputation." The only talk I am seeing about this is from you guys. Shit happens, fests cancel because of bad weather all the time. Everybodies getting a refund. They'll sell out the fest again next year.
Go right ahead and ignore the aforementioned ancillary costs that won't get refunded. As well as the other arguments people have brought up.
I have to imagine that there was something in the terms and conditions we all agreed to about ancillary costs which wouldn't be refunded should it be cancelled.
- Was the decision to cancel Founders/Live Nation's or did the NYC Parks department over-rule them? I'm thinking it was the Parks department which probably was built into the agreement they have with Randalls Island which would allow the parks to do so. - Didn't end up thundering but the forecast had called for it and given the potential logistical nightmare of trying to evacuate 50,000 people with a pedestrian walkway and one slow-as-fuck ferry at a time, would have been a nightmare. - I'm sure Kanye West's team had good intentions with that Webster Hall show but, as the Foo Fighters demonstrated with their Irving Plaza show in 2014, you can't have a stadium act announce a show and not expect thousands to be on the streets. Nonetheless in a very busy area of the city to begin with. - The only people who would be concerned about a festival's rep for cancelling due to weather are us nerds on the Inforoo board. If any festival be it Panorama or Gov ball books a good collection of acts that people want to see, they will buy tickets. Hell, Donald Trump and his team could curate a festival in San Francisco featuring Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem and Kanye West and it'd still sell out in droves. - Still bummed I missed M83 but, alas, personal obligations.

M83 was way better than I anticipated. Not a fan of the new album at all; but the live show still brings it. Def catch them the next time you get a chance.

Ah damn. Well, I would have been the world's worst boyfriend if I had left my girlfriend standing out in front of my apartment with 3 large suitcases, without keys, in the rain after she flew from India to New York. She made somehow, record time stepping off the plane at 8:30, going through customs (!!!) getting a car from Newark Airport and making it to my door at 9:45.
I'm assuming M83 will be back in the fall. What venue do you think they can play at this point. Radio City?

Haha yeah, you def made the right call on that one.
Radio City makes sense. Hoping Terminal 5 but they might be too big for that now?
My fav sets of the weekend 1. Beck 2. Prophets of Rage at Warsaw 3. Purity Ring 4. M83 5. The Strokes 6. Jamie xx 7. HAIM at Samsung 8. Christine and the Queens 9. Miguel 10. Father John Misty

They could do 2x Terminal 5. Radio City seems more like the right kind of vibe for them, unless they do a late summer show at Summerstage or that new ampitheater in Brooklyn.
My fav sets were 1. Against Me! 2. Beck 3. Bob Moses 4. Haim 5. Miike Snow 6. Misterwives 7. Of Monsters & Men 8. The Strokes 9. Father John Misty 10. Bloc Party*
* Caught a bit of Jamie XX but, while I love the record, it was just as I expected. Him twiddling around with lights. I think if I had staked out a spot closer (even the VIP area was packed), I would've enjoyed more but I just felt too detached.

Ah sorry to hear it. I had so much fun at Jamie xx. I chilled way in the back by the Prince and Bowie artwork with my crew. We all played a game where each of us would do a dance move, then the next person had to redo that same move and add one of their own. I dunno if I am explaining it right, but it made for some drunken hilarity.

Yeah Christine and the Queen's were that good. Plus how about that light rain that perfectly complimented the show. Damn M83 was that high? I'll definitly either catch them with Tame Impala near me after Roo or I'll catch them at Osheaga. Gotta see Tyler at Roo.

You're right; people get screwed over all the time with their vacation/travel plans. And an increase in aberrant weather conditions (brought on by climate change) will affect all festivals.
And of course GovBall can easily sell out next year with a kickass lineup.
But at the end of the day, despite their best efforts, GovBall took an L this year.

Jealous. I really want to go to that Tame Impala/M83 show. So lame that its 4 hours away and on a weeknight. Might try to catch Tame Impala in Prospect Park if I can snag a ticket. M83 at Osheaga is def a must.

Shoot me a message closer to the date for that TA show at Prospect Park (6/15). Might have an extra.
This festival really took a hit for me with the cancellation of Kanye. Still had a good time but definitely didn't have the full effect.
1. Miguel (he was incredible, made the rain amazing) 2. Jamie xx (absolutely incredible lights and music, ethereal) (big drop) 3. M83 (they were fine, really week setlist though, no wait or lower your eyelids as they usually do) 4. Christine & The Queens (watched from far away but was really impressed with everything in the set) 5. Mini golf (that was really fun)

Right on. Thanks alot man. I may take you up on that. I'd reimburse you for the ticket and get you a drink or two as well. I'll hit you up early next week and see if its doable.

My favorite sets:
1. Beck 2. Bloc Party 3. Miguel 4. The Strokes 5. M83 6. GOOD Music at Summerjam 7. Catfish & the Bottlemen 8. Christine and the Queens 9. Bully 10. Of Monsters and Men
I watched half of Thundercat but thought it was pretty boring. Purity Ring would have been more enjoyable if everyone wasn't fighting for coverage. Did first 10 minutes of Action Bronson but it wasn't clicking with me. Also did first 4 songs of The Killers and then made the smart decision to run to M83. Of course super bummed about all my most anticipated acts being on Sunday but hey shit happens. If anything this'll justify me going to a day of Panorama.

I know it's not the popular opinion on Inforoo, but I was at the entire Killers show and they were awesome. I'm not a huge fan or anything but I really thought they were outstanding. One of my favorites.
1. The Strokes 2. Beck 3. Black Pistol Fire (it was that good) 4. The Killers 5. Bob Moses 6. Torres 7. Haim 8. Bully 9. Christine and the Queens 10. Thundercat
I was really bummed about missing Courtney yesterday. Kanye would have been good but I wasn't looking forward to that crowd, to be honest. Also, my VIP ticket for $262 on stubhub was still an amazing deal and getting a 33% refund. I think the commute to the fest has me non-committal on next year but with a lineup good enough I'd go.

As soon as I posted it tickets got sold out. I had two tickets selected and then it timed out on me. Ah well. Wouldve been sick to see him in such a small venue.

Last time I saw him in a small venue was the Bonnaroo On Tap Lounge in 2011.

Top 5 for me:
1) The Strokes 2) Beck 3) HAIM 4) The Killers 5) Bully
Honorable mentions: Lord Huron, Black Pistol Fire
Biggest disappointments: Of Monsters and Men, Father John Misty, The Weather
Despite ending 15 minutes early (possibly due to the rain), HAIM really impressed me on Saturday. Based on what I've seen from videos of past performances, they've definitely stepped up their live show. And judging by the two new songs they played, I'm really looking forward to the new album. I went to Lord Huron only familiar with a handful of their songs, but I ended up staying for the entire set. Their music might not be particularly exciting on album, but their live performance was full of energy and passion. Something I felt Of Monsters and Men were lacking on Friday.

You act as if Governor's Ball is invulnerable to the valid criticisms people are bringing up, and it's getting old. You can "lol" all you like, but guess what? There's competition out there now, and given social media's reaction to everything that occurred yesterday (people yelling "fuck Governor's Ball" during the shitshow at Webster Hall last night), I'd say they will need to step up or they're fucked. Don't be a jerkoff and maybe take this a little more seriously.
To be fair, people have been railing Voodoo on their Facebook page about "making up for last year" as if they had anything to do with flooded festival grounds and gave attendees a 1/3 refund on tickets. So some people are going to bitch anyway and they are often the loudest. Obviously Governor's Ball didn't handle the aftermath as well as they should, but I wouldn't call Launchpad a jerkoff.
With the right line ups gov ball will be just fine, but if there's a deterrent for people to return (or go for the first time, in my case) it's gotta be whether or not it continues to take place on Randall's. Cuz yeah, everyone who's saying that yesterday's cancellation was the right thing to do is correct... but that's based largely on the fact that an island is a logistical nightmare to evacuate.
If it were on the mainland somewhere, yesterday probably wouldn't have been more than a long delay, a la Summer Jam.
