New to the board this year, but I'll be at Langhorne tonight. If you see someone in a blue Pirates hat and Delta Spirit T odds are it's me. Drove in solo from Pittsburgh bright and early this morning. Almost died twice on the GWB, but I finally made it to my first NFF.

Just got home, hope some of y'all are enjoying/enjoyed aftershows!
My day: Basia Bulat - thought she was really good, a great way to ease into the festival. Her voice is killer, I liked her songs and her cape and her 101 year old zither.
Fruit Bats - Fun but I only stayed for a couple songs, wish I'd just done the whole set because I tend to enjoy their stuff whenever I've checked them out
Raury - I guess it's good we've now had hip-hop at the Fort, but I could think of a whole lot of better artists that could've had that spot. His rapping was good, but I was hoping he'd have some musicians on stage besides a drummer, and his singing was like bad karaoke. Jesus. How did he get success doing that? Maybe it was just a really bad day. Great energy though!
St. Paul & the Broken Bones - I was chilling in the back of the field for them, but they killed and all the new stuff sounded great. Glad to finally see them at Newport, and I was having fun dancing and singing along from far away
Matthew Logan Vasquez - Another great set. He's just such a fun performer and all the guests and covers and stuff kept it moving at a really nice pace
Ray Lamontagne - Ugh. The playing was fantastic. But I'd bet money on that being objectively the worst setlist Ray Lamontagne has ever had. I can't imagined what possessed him to make a setlist that was more than half songs from his worst album. Again, I thought the band sounded stellar, I loved the Ouroboros section and the rearranged "All the Wild Horses," and "Airwaves" had a good Van Morrison-type vibe, but I left pretty disappointed and bummed I didn't go to his Boston shows last month.
The Arcs - Only caught about 15 minutes of them but they were fantastic. Made me wish I'd left Ray early for them! Definitely hope they keep touring so I can get more chances to see them. Bonnaroo 2017 sounds good to me!
Flight of the Conchords - Hilarious. Everything I was hoping it would be and they played pretty much all the songs I wanted to hear other than "Hiphopopatum vs. Rhymenoceros." New stuff was great and their banter was on point. I'm surprised it played as well to the crowd as it did, because it's definitely an awkward setting when what they're doing is much more "comedy special" than "concert" but I'm glad Newport took the chance on booking them. Keeping the festival different.

I'll just say this, lots of guest appearances tonight between Shovels & Rope and Deer Tick(John Moreland, Matthew Logan Vazquez, Hayes Carll, Johnny Fritz, Margot Price, Lucius). Crazy first night to my first NFF. If you don't count last night's Langhorne show I guess.
Ray Lamontagne - Ugh. The playing was fantastic. But I'd bet money on that being objectively the worst setlist Ray Lamontagne has ever had. I'm a big fan of his last two albums but he said in a recent Relix article that he pretty much hates his first 3 albums and doesnt really enjoy playing them. The sound that Ray fans fell in love with was never his intention. It was the producers on each album that told him to make the songs simpler and more stripped down. He even implied that he might stop writing music because of how satisfied he is with Ouroboros
The Arcs - Only caught about 15 minutes of them but they were fantastic. Made me wish I'd left Ray early for them! Definitely hope they keep touring so I can get more chances to see them. Bonnaroo 2017 sounds good to me!
Did leave early and did not regret. Caught the tail end of St. Paul in the square space recording area. Fantastic. Will be checking out SS sign board tomorrow am. Then rolled into the Arcs which was killer.
cath - we have your blanket and will get it to you tomorrow am. @jcrus0 great meeting you and hanging out.

Yeah I read it, he also didn't speak highly of his experience with Dan Auerbach, and he's been playing plenty of older songs on this tour. He could even rearrange them and I'd be happy. I love Ouroboros, but I think half the songs on Supernova are really really bad. Especially "Drive-In Movies" and the title track. I'd rather a spaced-out version of "Burn," "Jolene" or "God Willin'...," or just the rest of the new album.
Started off the day with a prime seat at the quad for Wild Child and they were a good and energetic way to start the day. I'd have liked to have seen JP Harris instead but I like supporting Texas bands (my home state) and, more importantly, I wanted to be sure to get a good spot for Basia Bulat as she was one of my top picks. Thankfully she didn't disappoint at all. Absolutely loved everything about her set.
Wandered around after that for a bit, caught a few songs of Fruit Bats and enjoyed it but then decided to go check out Raury. I really wish I had stayed (or went and caught the start of St. Paul) because I left in disappointment a few songs into him. As CGS mentioned, "bad karaoke" is the best way to describe how it sounded to me. Unfortunate because I had been looking forward to seeing him.
Caught a couple of songs of St. Paul while getting lunch and they were definitely hot, but Aoife O'Donovan was my other "must" for Friday so I wanted to be sure to catch her whole set. Thankfully she delivered and it made up for the constant conflicts I've had with being able to see her live going back a few years now.
Wandering and catching a tiny bit of Violent Femmes then made my way to Radical Face. Very entertaining and I very much enjoyed his show and I have very much the same sense of humor as him which made it all the better. As strange as some of his songs themes are, he's got a killer voice and their overall sound is great. Loved getting to hear him do The Mute!
Went in for Motel Song Swap and stayed for a couple/few songs but left as I couldn't handle their banter. (Which just made me hate my decision when I heard about Kristofferson!)
Ray was definitely underwhelming. He wasn't bad, just couldn't get into him. I've been on the fence about him for a while now and today wss the deciding factor. The MMJ guys were on point though and definitely helped to make up for it.
FotC were fantastic! I didn't realize they had as much new stuff as I was unaware of. They were great. Was hoping they'd play Sugar Lumps but knew that was unlikely.
Overall a good day. The ones I really looked forward to (Basia, Aoife, FotC) all surpassed any expectations I had and I also got to see some great other sets (namely Wild Child and Radical Face).
Oh, somewhere in there I stopped in the museum and listened to the female mariachi band. Holy hell they were great. That was a definite treat!).
I should of left Raury for St. Paul, but I took a nap instead. Wasn't impressed by Raury. But since we got rappers now, can we get RTJ?
Also should of left Ray for The Arcs. I agree that the setlist outside Ouroboros material was underwhelming. Meanwhile The Arcs were really good and I wish I saw more.
I'm attending the XPN Festival in Camden, NJ which Father John Misty played tonight, and seeing how he's playing Newport Folk Festival tomorrow, I though you guys might want a head's up.
When Father John Misty took the stage today, he proceeded to talk semi-coherently for about ten minutes, questioning the crowd on whether or not we deserved to be amused and what entertainment is. Following that, he played a seemingly improvised ~10-minute song that referenced various things at the festival. He then played a Leonard Cohen cover, following which he aimlessly talked about a battleship that was docked in the river behind him. After this, he said he was done and left the stage with more than half of his time remaining, having played only 2 songs (0 of them being Father John Misty songs). In addition, about 5 minutes after his set, while leaving the stage in a van, I saw him laughing hysterically, as if he were incredibly proud of his performance.
Out of all the acts at XPN Fest, my wife and I were most excited to see Father John Misty and couldn't have been more disappointed by his performance. His act was incredibly disrespectful to his fans that showed up to see him, and also to the member-supported public radio station that puts on XPN Fest. In addition, following his set he tweeted out the phrases "Pure entertainment" and "Amused to death," again showing that he was seemingly thrilled with his performance.
Hopefully you guys get a great Father John Misty set tomorrow...
Yesterday was a phenomenal day! Thank you for being so welcoming, it made my festival experience that much better as I usually don't have any to talk to about the music It was great meeting you all, especially fawnmart, @ld, bonzai and everyone else I forgot!
Here's some photos (of the whole day) I took when I split away from you guys: imgur.com/a/LPFWZ
As for the acts I've seen, I'd probably rank them as:
St. Paul & the Broken Bones The Arcs Mariachi Flor de Toloache The Staves Case/Lang/Veirs (the two songs I caught at least) Flight of the Conchords Ray Lamontagne Violent Femmes Amasa Hines (I just didn't get there early enough to really check them out, but they did sound good)
More thoughts later, still waking up lol I remember I did stop at the booth to register to vote, as I wasn't sure if I was signed up or not
Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

FJM had a bit of a shitshow moment the last time he played Newport. I wasn't at that set, but haven't heard anything good.
I've heard good things about it, he was just a little too wild (and drunk) for a lot of people and was smashing equipment and such. If you watch videos they sound great. My dad enjoyed his set that year. As did the Milk Carton Kids per Twitter a while back if that counts for anything.
Lucius are playing the museum stage at 11:30 if anyone is interested. I won't get there in time but it should mean they're around all day so that's fun!
I'm glad I made the split second decision to catch a little bit of mariachi flor de toloache at the museum stage, they were fantastic! Incredibly talented musicians and their voices were phenomenal
Also, I think I made the right choice with leaving Ray Lamontagne's set early to catch all of The Arcs. The Arcs were fantastic, and the Mariachi girls came back out to sing with them, which was the best
My favorite set of the day was St. Paul & The Broken Bones though, I was blown away having never seen them before. I was about 30 feet from the stage and was completely into it - so soulful, so good

The butthurt comments on that article are hilarious. "We paid to be entertained, shut up and play the hits!"
Sucks for those who were genuinely excited for his music though. I get the impression that FJM is sick of his newfound fame and fanbase. Friend of mine saw him at HOB Boston a few months ago and said the crowd was insufferable.
