I feel like funk has been more popular. Maybe not mainstream but a lot of bands are adding more horns, soul, and rnb sounds.
Yeah, that's some of it. If Indie is moving on and EDM is getting passe' except for certain acts and getting a younger and younger group of kids following, there has to be something else. I think hybridization of styles will probably be the next wave until something specific emerges that everyone else tries to chase. Rudimental, who I saw and did not like, nevertheless was an act incorporating rock, jazz, R&B, hip hop, etc. in their performances. You have stuff like Banks & Steelz, DJ's playing with more live instrumentation and performers,
There will always be the small fad type stuff like we've seen the last couple of years - tropical house, chill wave, etc. that might be semi-big for a little while before fading out.
True, Passion Pit is downgrading the size of the venues they're playing on their next tour.
I'd say Local Natives, based on their first two albums, were better than most of those bands, but their new album was such a disappointment it's making me reevaluate their entire career.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad album. Just very underwhelming given the critical reception to the first two albums.
It's not bad, just very vanilla, middle-of-the-road and honestly dated. In a way that's kinda the worst album to put out.
Agreed. It isn't a BAD album. I can listen to it and enjoy some songs. I'd rather listen to their other albums, though. In general, we as fans expect each albums to get better or at least be comparable to the last. This last album just feels like the diet version of Local Natives. Of course, if they start drawing massive crowds, sell out shows months in advance, then kudos on the success and maybe we'll see rise on the bills. They are getting a lot of air time on Sirius XMU and Alt Nation but I have no idea how much that service represents true popularity.
As for what is trending? I'll put some $$ on funk, jazz, and soul becoming more trendy. More pop vocalists? There was a bad article about the return of 90s grunge and alternative. Maybe that's happening. It does seem like a big wash right now.
I know she mentioned attending before. smellycat , will we be seeing you and some Andrew Snaps around Austin this weekend?
ugh I. WISH.
I didn't have a job lined up when I got back to Richmond (and I was being really picky) and once I landed my new internship flights were well over $500. I'm so sad since this could have made up for missing radiohead in NYC + I still haven't seen LCD.
CoS gave Local Natives the "Next Band To Headline" review. What do y'all think? While they can be easily tossed into the massively crowded category of indie/alt, I do feel they have offer more than their peers. Their previous ACL gig was maybe 2012 or 13 and they were very impressive. Plenty of energy and talent abroad. I just don't know if there is enough to pull them above the threshold and past acts like Cage the Elephant, Young the Giant, Fitz n the Tantrums ect. I will see them this Sunday for sure.
... jumping in on this local natives chat...
I've been a *huge* fan of these guys since 2011. I've since seen them like 6 or 7 times and have always said they are one of the most impactful live bands. their stage presence and tightness of performance is powerful. just looked back and in 2013 I captioned a photo I took of them: "it's no exaggeration when I say that @localnatives are the absolute best band to see live."
I haven't seen them since the new album, but I agree that it's a little lackluster. regardless though, I could see them projecting in the next few years. I would be really happy if they did because I think they deserve it.
Austin tap water is ok in limitations BUT I stopped drinking it as a local because it was giving me renal stones. An Ultrasound tech said it's very common that people get stones when they move here. I now drink filtered water or have it delivered and haven't had an issue since the incidents.
Look into Austin B Cycle if you're only a few miles from the fest. They have a drop zone right at the entrance but you will have to walk to find a station after the fest.

I think canned is way weirder. Wait... You got kidney stones from the drinking water in Austin? Are you serious? I have never heard of water giving you stones. WTF, is in the water to cause that?
If anyone needs to unload a weekend 2 ticket I would be interested. We are heading into Austin now. Looking to get one or a day pass for my brother.
There is a group on FB selling crazy amounts of ACL tickets that I wish I could direct everyone to. But it's a closed group for UT students only. Try looking into an Austin buy/sell/trade group. They're all flooded with tickets right now.
Would be great to get WIEAYB. They haven't played it since 2009 (that's off the top of my head so not sure if that's 100% accurate), but it's been soundchecked a couple times this year so who knows
