Officially hitting up Forecastle this year... any advice on their pit situation? Does it exist? Does it work similar to Bonnaroo?
Theres no pit at Forecastle but you can get within 20 people of the stage for all but the most popular shows on the main stage just by walking up 5 min before it starts. If its someone you really want to see, just one show early should get you very close. I was 6 people back from jack white in 2014 just by sitting through band of horses.
Forecastle's biggest strength is managable crowds. Have fun! I think it'll be a great year.
Excellent!! I love being close for the shows I really wanna see!!
This will be my first time at Forecastle, any other tips or sound words of advice??

Louisville in July is super hot. Prepare accordingly. Learn the shady spots within the park quick. Also, in general, look at some stuff in Louisville and see if anything grabs you. It's an underrated city.

Yeah, most years haven't been TOO bad, but last year was scorching. I hope it isn't repeated this year.
The line to get in can be long as they get stuff organized on Friday. If you have someone you care about Friday afternoon/early evening, I'd try and get there at least 90 minutes beforehand. The rest is smooth sailing though.
Louisville isn't very open to smoking stuff other than cigarettes, if you do. And there are police inside the venue although they mostly stay at congested areas and food vendors. But, if you're in a crowd at a big show, you're probably safe. They tend to look the other way, but I wouldn't do it out in the open like Bonnaroo.
As far as outside the fest:
4th Street Live is a tourist trap, if you're partying after hours go to Bardstown Road or Frankfort Avenue or the St. Matthews area. All three have better and cheaper bars. If the weather is cool, the Big 4 Bridge is very close to Forecastle downtown and you can walk across to Indiana. There's a pretty tasty yogurt shop right on the other side. There has been construction taking place downtown since I moved here more than 2 years ago. Try to avoid downtown traffic between 4 and 6 if you can help it. It's not pretty.
I figured the heat would play a factor. Right now, here in Tennessee we're literally melting during the day. Hopefully the evenings won't be too rough. I would LOVE to find a shady place to throw my hammock up for day time hangs... if something like that is possible.
We'll definitely be hunting some yummy beverage and food options in Louisville. And the Big 4 Bridge sounds perfect. I love a nice walking bridge... and yogurt for that matter.
Man!! I'm so excited now. I've heard that Forecastle is a great city festival. Which is kind of new for me... I'm a Bonnaroo vet now but city fests are a totally different thing. I went to Music Midtown in Atlanta a few years ago and it was a MESS. I'm hoping for a better experience this time.

Any recommendations that are a little closer/walkable to downtown? We walked to 4th Street last year from our hotel and agree it sucks, so we're open to suggestions for Thursday night. The ladyfriend said that 4th Street was fine when she started going to Forecastle (whatever year it started up as an AC thing) but it has steadily gotten worse every year as it has become more blatantly touristy.

Within walking distance of forecastle is a little tricky since so many are on 4th Street. I really like Against the Grain. They brew all their beer in house and the food is great, but its as much restaurant as bar and closes at 12.
I hear great things about Third Street Dive, which is right outside of 4th street, obviously, but i live on the outskirts of town and havent gone in yet. Gonna make it a point to this year.
I always end up at the Back Door on Bardstown road. Its very chill, very cheap and there are about 8 pool tables in the back. But some kind of ride is needed, its 5-10 minutes drive from the fest.
Edit: and 4th Street Live isn't THAT bad. It's nearby, and there are a lot of different bars to pick your atmosphere. But, its gonna be pricey and after Forecastle its going to be packed.

Thanks for the info. We did do Against The Grain last year and likely will again this year. Quality beer is a big selling point for us in general. Also, the group I go with is not as much about the late night hours, so 12 really isn't that bad for us. Haha.

The Troll Pub is a fun place too Dave Maynar. I like their food, atmosphere is fun, decent beer/drink selection. Very close to the festival. It is under the bridge.
Eh, I think Haim is actually the most likely of the 3. Would love Morrissey but he's hard enough to get anyway and J. Cole is just...J. Cole. Forecastle's headliners just aren't usually that interesting. Sorry, about to ramble.
Been thinking about Forecastle's headliners lately as the festival's fast approaching and they're just meh. But then again, the headliners have always been...unreliable. But they were surely better 2014 and before.
2012: My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Bassnectar, Girl Talk 2013: The Black Keys, The Avett Brothers, String Cheese Incident, Robert Plant 2014: Outkast, Jack White, Beck, The Replacements 2015: Sam Smith, My Morning Jacket, Widespread Panic, Modest Mouse 2016: Avett Brothers, Alabama Shakes, Ryan Adams, Death Cab
Obviously, the winner is 2014. Those headliners would look good at the top of a Bonnaroo line-up. I'm not even sure how they pulled it off to be honest.
2012 and 2013 are about equal. Both top 3's were fairly relevant at the time, even if they were a year or two past their collective primes.
2015 is shit. Saved by MMJ being hometown heroes and Modest Mouse at #4.
2016 is weird. Alabama Shakes aren't quite headliners but they fit the festival and it makes sense at least. This is kinda the last gasp for the Avett Brothers I think. Don't see them headlining anymore after this, At least not for 5ish years. Ryan Adams/Death Cab is a pretty strong 3 and 4 though, if not exactly to my taste.
I think people would be flipping their shit for this festival if you replaced Avetts and Alabama Shakes with some combo of Florence, the Killers, Tame Impala or Sufjan Stevens. What we've got headliner wise is blanddddd, even if it may be a hair better than last years.
All this is a little disappointing since I love the undercard this year. My days are stacked, and my list of bands on Saturday in particular would be a good day at Bonnaroo. The dance music is better than its been since like 2013 and closing Sunday out with Death Cab>Washed Out>Ryan Adams will be an awesome end to the weekend. I just can't get pumped about Avetts, who I've had an opportunity to see at Bonnaroo or Forecastle almost every year since 2010 and the Alabama Shakes who are almost the exact same but since 2012. I hope they can get their big draw figured out for next year because its the only thing holding this festival back.
Hey guys! Doing forecastle for the first time at last minute here. Are hotels the only place to crash at
There's always AirBnB. I just looked and there are some decent priced rooms on there still. Depends on if they will actually book for the price listed and how far you are willing to drive. I seem to remember people talking about some campgrounds across the river maybe. I can't remember specifics, but I want to see they ended up being difficult logistically.
Oh yeah, it appears 3rd Street Dive might be happening sometime that weekend for us (probably Thursday night). Thanks for the tip, Dale Cooper.
My wife just reminded me last night now close we're getting to Forecastle. I'm looking forward to a return trip to Louisville! And by the way, for first timers, my wife and I love hitting Doc Crow's Southern Smokehouse and Raw Bar every Friday before we walk into the festival. It's downtown, and it has a great offering of food and drinks. It's become our first-day tradition after checking into the hotel. ...

One of the couples going this year has backed out, so they are selling their tix for what they paid. 162.50 per. ticket = 325.00 for 2 If anyone is interested pm me and we'll get together Friday before the Fest begins. Personally love the Friday & Sunday lineup the best. Look forward to another great weekend in Louisville. 9 days to go.

So, long story shorter, the lady friend has a new work assignment she knew was starting soon which can be a big opportunity for her. It involves traveling Monday to Thursday. When they were working through getting her on the assignment, she was told her time off for Forecastle was safe. After she declined another assignment and committed to this one, she finds out that part of the contract is that all people on the assignment have to be there the first two weeks solid. She also found out she starts Monday. Unfortunately, they could not figure out a way to let her go for Forecastle, so she can't make it this year. All this means I got an extra ticket I am looking to move. Send me a message if you are interested.
Edit: I'm in Knoxville. Will be in Louisville Thursday night.
My GF and I are both wanting to pit for the Avetts on Friday night. Problem is she's got back problems out the wazoo and will collapse if we stand at the stage for 3-4+ hours. With that in mind, what would be the latest I could get to Ben Harper and still be within the closest fourth of the crowd?

Honestly, if you walked up right as Ben Harper ended you could probably be in the closest 1/4th of the crowd.
The VIP pit area is to the left of the stage and the rail comes out a bit. You may be able to post up on that side and get a good view/have something to lean on.

One of the reasons that I love Forecastle is that the crowd is always super fluid when it comes to the main stages. The only time I've ever seen it too packed to move up without being a dick to everyone around me was for Outkast. Just show up towards the end of pre-headliner and the crowd will clear after they finish. It's pretty easy to move up. Enjoy!

This a godsend to hear. Have no idea what to expect from this fest but have had some worries about dealing with the crowds, especially considering my counterpart and her enjoyment of the weekend. It'll be a lot better for her (and thus better for me) to mozy on up as the sets end. Thanks to Dale and Tactical for the insight.

I was wrong about the David Bowie and Prince tribute being friday. It is actually Saturday and sunday.
Also did anyone notice the ridiculously small bag size we are allowed to bring in this year. We checked every bag in our house and even my daughter's old preschool backpack is to big. I guess no blanket going in this year unless you carry them in your hands.

I saw that and wonder how it will be enforced.
"Small backpacks and purses and empty hydration bladder packs. Large backpacks, book bags, or any bag that is not clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC, and over 12”x6”x12” in size will not be allowed."
That second sentence is so weird. You can bring small backpacks but not a book bag. When I think of a book bag, I think of a small backpack like the ones you take to school which makes it feel like it is being permitted in one sentence and disallowed in the next.
