That breaks my heart if Wolf Alice had a tiny crowd. Tickets are still available for their afterdark show on Sunday. Still on the fence if I should go.
Wolf Alice was the biggest surprise of the day for me. They kicked so much ass. It was my third-favorite set of the day after Jack White and YYYs.
Fuck, the rainstorm has arrived, expecting Randall’s Island to be a mud fest tonorrow
Given where we were with the forecast a couple of days ago - a 90% chance of thunderstorms all damn day - I will gladly take a muddy field in exchange for three full festival days when I thought I might only get two.

Plus it's supposed to be hoottttt at least at some points today which will alleviate some of that...keep with the positive vibes...day 1 was great....arrived for maggie... saw Tash which was best set of the day...yyys were on point Karen was loving that crowd...took a food break w relatively short lines before watching James Blake with about 50 others haha...still a great set from him as well!
Regrettes > VHS Collection > Jay Electronica/Moses Sumney (game-time decision) > The Menzingers > Japandroids > Cut Copy > Manchester Orchestra > Silk City > Gaslight Anthem
I'll be wearing the t-shirt with the unicorn riding a dinosaur and the words "To the disco!" on it...and a dark blue poncho, if it comes to that.
See you out on the field!
Damn bro Idk how you do it in your 40s, I been almost all day yesterday and I’m pretty beat from standing more than 8 hrs haha, can’t do it that early in my late 20s for day 2.. Anyways have fun & if I see I’ll give you a high five (we are doing pretty much the same sets)
But the Gov Ball crowd — which seemed to consist largely of teenagers drinking for the first time and social media influencers taking pictures of their food — perhaps have a more colloquial definition of “emo music,” just like their definition of “liking music.”
Watched the Cut Copy stream for a little bit and now Japandroids. Very small crowds at both.
That James Blake article is something. Like to see crowd shots from that one for sure
Tossing out a thought. Are we expecting "too big" of crowds from some of these groups?
Cut Copy, from my experience, has always played at Stubbs here in Austin which is roughly 2k capacity. I don't think it has sold out. Japandroids I believe played at Mohawk, roughly 500-1k capacity. Possibly sold out. Do we expect them to have massive, sardine packed shows? When given a massive open field, perhaps they are filling up the space as expected, but it is hard to tell when they're not crammed into a tiny club setting.
While very popular towards the end of 12/13, were the YYYs busting out 2k, 5k, 10 venues? I have never seen them live (yet) and never paid much attention to fest and concert logistics back then so correct me if I'm wrong. The live stream made it out to look like they had at least few grand in the space. Maybe they were a bit over hyped? Maybe that was the expected crowd size?
Cut Copy had a pretty spacious, but large crowd at ACL. You could get to the front, but it looked more like everyone was respecting the space and allowing each other plenty of room to dance (they were also up against Ice Cube who definitely had a bigger crowd, though).
While some groups are held to high regard here, they may very well still be obscure in the mainstream world and small in their respective fan base.

Great day of music yesterday. Would say Wolf Alice was the most fun show of the day.
Agree with what has been said about crowds being dead. From my small sample size at the rock shows I saw ( plus DRAM) it was less the teenagers and social media influencers and more the drunk adults not giving a fuck.
Wonder how the sold out days will compare to yesterday

Ehh.. yeah you’re probably right. I think japandroids surprised me the most. I’m a pretty big fan, so I was expecting a big turn out
YYY with the hometown show I figured they would draw huge
I was just at the Sill City set and overheard an announcer on the Main stage begging people to take a few steps back. Must be a ton of chaos in anticipation for Travis Scott. In more sad news, walked nearly up to the stage 20 min befor The Gaslight Anthem is going on so don’t think they’ll have much of a crowd.

What a mean spirited article. I overheard a bit over SXM and it sounded decent. Who blames a band for hitting the old catalogue hard? Every band does that, especially with 20 years of tenure in multiple groups. Was his crowd that small?
I think everyone is wondering what a good booking is these days. Especially rock acts. I really think there are becoming more and more sets of festival goers. I started festing at 23. Most of my friends only go to ACL as their one time to see a band and always look at the line up in bewilderment. It's weird.
Best set of the day goes to TGA! Small crowd but passionate, the pouring rain at 10:20ish made it perfect..
Doesn't get much better than a crowd singalong to a song bout "standing in the pouring rain" while in the rain in the state (next to lol) the one it's written about
