I don’t want to sound like an old curmudgeon or sound like an old curmudgeon by using the word curmudgeon, but do these kids going to the festival not take a few minutes to play samples of bands playing? I’ll never understand how someone picks a Post Malone or Travis Scott over bands like Gaslight and YYY. I’m a bit partial because I happen to think Brian Fallon is one of the best songwriters of our generation.
I’ll never be massive hip-hop fan, but I can still objectively tell the difference between Post Malone and Kendrick Lamar. If I’m Live Nation/Founders I see no real reason to book much of anything rock related.

I think the best way to explain this is that the majority of teens are attracted to the music and shows that they feel are the most lit. They don't give a crap about the musicianship or if Travis Scott is autotuned or has a backing track, they just love that it was a giant, crazy party for an hour. Lit AF. Post Malone I can understand the appeal. His songs are catchy as hell. I think Travis Scott sounds like the rest of the soundcloud-mumblyrap of this era.
Like, I understand that the YYY's and Gaslight rock the f*ck out and are lit to us olds (because yes mid-20's is old at Gov Ball), but they would consider it boring. Just is what it is, no 17 year old wants to hear about how important and cool the Yeah Yeah Yeah's were when they were 3 years old.

I watched the Travis Scott stream for a few minutes and I thought it was fucking awful. I get that it would be fun - but I'd need a heap of drugs and alcochol in me to have a good time. #hottake
All the old people must have been waiting for Third Eye Blind. Haha. That wasn’t an 18 and under crowd.
I dont care what anyone says my 34 year old self got down to that set
Haha. Looked like a fun show. We got them as a Voodoo clue yesterday, and it was the weakest of the 6. However, people were clearly into it, and they sounded pretty good on tv. Id probably try to see some of it.

I dont tbink this is fair. I was in the crowd for Travis and I was talking to multiple people who said that Gaslight was the act they wanted to see the second most that day. Travis has significantly more critical acclaim than Post. The show itself for me was decent but the whole riot style of the crowd I didn’t like

Same, really boggles my mind hes a top 3 act here and at Osheaga. I'm sure he'll have good counter programming though.

I mean you see the size of his crowd? Obviously he's a top 3 based on that alone
To be fair the worst crowds I’ve experienced were here.I try to not get up in arms about it but takes away from my experience when people are loud, rude, and obnoxious which more often than not they are. It’s a shame because this really is a great festival. I should also note that kids weren’t the only problem. Tool fans can stay far away from any fest I go to
I don't know if it was my spot in the crowds, but this year I was bothered very little by the kids. Sure I'd see them parading around in their "clothing" and walk across the fields holding hands in a chain of 10+ but during the sets I went to I think GovBall did a great job of making a compromise for the young and old crowds. Yes, the stages were relatively empty for TGA and James Blake, but if anything that added to the intimacy of their sets rather than making it anything negative
I think it's nice that Founders tries to give a tip to the rock/indies area, particularly the 00's rock scene. If they can keep turning a profit by booking the popular hip-hop/pop/edm while also throwing the older crowd a bone, the fest should still sell well. A few other stray thoughts:
- What is the deal with 90% of the acts not playing their full set time? Seems like everyone ends 10-15 min early at points. Are they led to believe their sets are actually shorter than the time slots we see? - Need to put the lockers somewhere else. Having people trying to get to their lockers at the end of Sat night during that bottleneck is a disaster. Also, for the walk to the bridge, no need to have half the path barricaded off. Adds to even more of a gridlock. - I like the giant cover on the American Eagle stage, hope they keep that for future years. - If you're over 25 and attending this fest, you must really to want to slum it if you don't do VIP. That being said, is there not a separate/faster entrance for VIP? Whole thing is a huge clusterfuck coming off the ferry/bridge and no one is around directing the lines.
Overall, I enjoyed myself but am exhausted after the weekend which is probably due to my age (34) but I think this may be last year of doing all three days.

You must have missed The Struts. Excellent Sunday afternoon show. They brought up a girl on stage to dance to their Springsteen cover (and, yes, she admitted she didn't know the words).

Holy shit, what a weekend. I really have to give props to Founders for continuing to book rock and older-skewing acts, despite the fact that it's clearly not where their bread is buttered from an audience standpoint. I don't know if they'll continue doing it given the way stage attendance played out this year...but, for now, it made for a great balance, and actually kind of mitigated the obnoxious teen factor relative to past years, for me, since most of the sets I attended weren't catering to that crowd.
My only big complaint, really, was the water refill station situation - there were fewer than in past years, and I don't know if they were slow, or what, but the mob scenes around them throughout Saturday and Sunday were insane. Also, I don't know if they had fewer people picking up trash, or something, but the grounds seemed particularly dirtier this year.
ANYWAY. Other than that, I had an absolute blast and saw some performances that blew my mind. Here's my ranking of all 29 sets I saw in full:
1. Jack White 2. Gaslight Anthem 3. Sylvan Esso 4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs 5. The Struts 6. Eminem 7. CHVRCHES 8. Wolf Alice 9. Manchester Orchestra 10. Moses Sumney 11. The Menzingers 12. Japandroids 13. Middle Kids 14. Third Eye Blind 15. Dirty Projectors 16. VHS Collection 17. Cut Copy (this would have been a good four spots higher if they'd played "Where I'm Going") 18. Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley 19. Confidence Man 20. Pond 21. Alvvays 22. The Regrettes 23. Slaves 24. Margo Price 25. Tash Sultana 26. Maggie Rogers 27. Billie Eilish 28. Knox Fortune 29. Silk City
PS - I am now convinced that LiveNation can control the weather. For the forecasts all week to be what they were, and then for the weekend to shape up like it did...not to mention the rain Saturday and Sunday holding off until the perfect time during each headlining set for maximum epic effect...it was really something.

The Struts were the most pleasant surprise of the festival, for me. So much fun.
I think that's also just a reflection of music writers realizing they're getting older and their tastes are no longer aligning with the youth. Happens to all of us. Gaslight just announced a Stone Pony Summerstage show in Aug which I make be up for making the trek for, that set was so good.
