But the Gov Ball crowd — which seemed to consist largely of teenagers drinking for the first time and social media influencers taking pictures of their food — perhaps have a more colloquial definition of “emo music,” just like their definition of “liking music.”
I was watching the James Blake set and it's not like the article is wrong.....the crowd was very small..smallest I've ever seen at a festival...but to me didn't take away from his performance which was spectacular and still sticking with me...still found it odd they didn't have him at the preheadline spot and have jw vs post Malone who probably would draw a bigger crowd than jack white and James Blake combined at this fest
Gaslight vs Travis is the worst scheduling decision in my three Gov balls. The Travis crowd is extremely packed to the point of dangerous
Strongly disagree ....got to watch gaslight in peace w adult fans while the kiddies went to travis Scott
Absolutely agree with your disagreement. The Gaslight show had one of the best crowds I've ever been in at a festival...maybe at any concert. My shoulder actually hurts from fist-pumping so damn much.

Can I just say both those Jack White and James Blake articles from NME and Stereogum are absolute trash.
Jack White killed it. He played a ton of his old stuff because he's a legacy act at this point. Does that writer roll her eyes when Radiohead plays No Surprises or NiN plays Closer? Get bent.
And the James Blake article is based on one kid thinking it was emo music, nice sample size. I hate that I couldn't go to it but unfortunately no one could because Gov Ball made one of the stupidest scheduling decisions ever.Gov Ball '18 is 75% teenyboppers and 25% adults. So 20% went to Jack White and 5% went to James Blake and 75% wandered around confused or left.
Tonight looked fun though with Gaslight rocking, and James Harden and trampling featured on the main stage.

Yes I get that from an inforoo perspective its great, similar to the way when i got to see Phoenix empty last year on the Main Stage. But I saw no less than 20 people who were crying as they attempted to push out of the Travis crwod, mostly young-ish girls. Saw multiple people pass out in the crowd as well. I left a few songs before he ended, and the crowd was extremely dense all the way to the Merch tent.
Also this crowd demographic is worse than Lolla’s and that’s hard to imagine. It works out fine when I wanna see shows like Cut Copy or Gaslight and I can get as close as I want though. It’s legit 75% 18 and younger.

I actually hope this is how they program for the future....bring in huge acts for the 16-25 demo to sell all the tickets and bring in an niche rock act for the older sect so we have somewhere to go during the huge headliner

Definitely younger Saturday than Friday....I will say at this point I've accepted it and as you said love how the counter programming has worked out in my favor this yr so that outweighs any negative feelings re:the youth

I think getting to and from the island and dealing with the miserable crowds isn't even worth it. I think it would need to be an incredibly rare act like this TGA set to deal with what went on yesterday

One other issue: the water refill stations have been an absolute disaster, especially yesterday. It was borderline dangerous the way people were shoving to try to get in there. Hopefully today won’t be as bad because it’s cooler, but this is the worst I’ve seen it in five years.
Anyone else get stuck in that insane bottleneck walking over the bridge? Took an hour to get from Randalls to 125th st, never seen anything like it in my comings and goings to Randalls Island.

I dont know where you're coming from that makes it so difficult but I've found it really easy getting on and off the island

Agree with this too....personally didn't experience it but saw from a distance how crowded it was....not sure what the deal was this year....one other change I've seen is a BIG increase in security walking around to curtail underage drinking...I actually saw them take bottles away from kids without 21 bracelets

The pics on social media make the fest look REALLY young. Def much younger than the camping fests, which makes sense. Looks like lots of high school kids.
This thing is always a complete kid fest. I was definitely not plan on coming back but the gaslight anthem and all. Very good day of white boy guitar rock. No crowds for that. Sadly if I were running this thing I’m walking by the stages I do believe I would pull the plug on all of the acts that I like. Or pay them less and put them earlier In The day
Just because I had nothing to do and to move up my position for the gaslight anthem I decided to make my way Through the Galantis crowd from the back. I have never hated a show more. What terrible I want to say music but I do t even know what it is I guess I like some of the songs that they played that other people wrote

I hear ya on the pulling the plug/moving up acts thing but I really hope they don't. I love the way the fest has been counter programmed this year. Let the huge crowds go to the main stage for those acts and attempt to book something that will resonate with the older crowds for the smaller stages. Seeing Manchester, Japandroids and Gaslight with a small and passionate more mature audience made the fest so much better for me than last year

This was always my impression of with this fest might be like. I suppose that’s to be expected of a city fest of this type though.

Agree. Totally worth the trip for what is defiantly now the counter programming. That said I am thinking that sooner or later it will just be booked to exclude the Japandroids or Manchester Orchestra in favor of Lil pump or lil t or lil something

Haha....may be true...I think they know they need to have at least sommme variety...right? RIGHT?!

This was something else. Legit hour and a half ordeal from when Gaslight ended to when I was able to walk out of the bridge back onto 2nd Ave. Killed every ounce of energy or excitement I had coming off Gaslight.

I personally hate articles like the Stereogum one about the James Blake crowd, where they use one or two clueless people as an avatar for a whole crowd. At some point people need to get over the fact that people like James Blake will have small crowds against a headliner at a younger leaning festival, and just enjoy the fact they still get booked there at all

You should have seen Silk City. I’m sure the stream wasn’t synched, but we put on Galantis which was way better if still a 1 or 1.5 on a 10 scale. Come back down to where rock matters (even to kids) along with everything else instead of having to lump it. You already know.
Been on a Trick of the Tail and also Steve Hillage/Gong kick all weekend.

How was Silk City? Their first single is pretty good.
I wasn’t a fan, but the crowd liked it. For the 20 or so minutes we watched before going out, there was kind of an okay percussion/beat part. But otherwise it was real pop and dance-House. You probably could get down with some of it, but other than producing a rap song or whatever, I haven’t really liked any Diplo that I’ve heard since Jack U.
