Everyone whose in the queue before the on-sale time gets a randomized spot. Everyone who enters the queue after the on-sale time is placed at the back of the line. It’s the same system they use for Coachella.
As for the talk of bait and switch...Goldenvoice didn’t force anybody to buy tickets. The price tiers were on the website this morning, and were very clear once you reached the purchase page.

BUT what is not clear to is how many tickets are available in each tier. It’s just like loot boxes in the gaming world.
Finally found some capacity info in a Billboard article about Tropicalia. Also it looks like Tropicalia sold out in the days leading up to the fest. The lineup was pretty bad and people were pretty vocal about it. Cardi dropped out and SZA took her spot.
"All events, which range in capacity from 10,000 to 15,000, sold out in the first year with Smokin Grooves and Summertime in the LBC selling out one day after going on sale. Tickets for Tropicalia are still available, but Billings thinks that come Saturday, Tropicalia will sell out too."

Advertising $99 "Early Bird" passes, not publishing price tiers until an hour or two before on-sale, then leaving the access of the "Early Bird" passes up to a randomized drawing is literally the definition of a bait and switch.
I - and many others - were in line prior to 10 AM PT and I didn't even have access to the $99 or $125 price tiers. Why advertise it like that if people ready prior to on-sale can't even get to the first two tiers of passes? Due to a randomized drawing, $150 was my floor.

That wasn't an early bird sale. They just threw that label on a tier of tickets. Early bird sales happen before general sale and are for people that buy tickets before anyone else. They weren't transparent in the slightest and you can tell by the reactions on every form of social media. They didn't force people to buy tickets, but it was a shady sales tactic.
edit: I don't think people are upset about the $150 price point. I am fine paying that. Last night they did not have info up about tiers though. This was advertised as a $99 festival. Straight up added tiers at the last second to cash out.

Well hopefully the money we were all just price gouged was just a donation to prove to Goldenvoice there's still people out there who want to see bands.
I like this line of reasoning. There's still a lot of money to be had in the indie rock market and it seems like most promoters are losing sight of that. Would love to see a version of this festival pop up somewhere on the east coast next year.

Yeah everyone seems to be under the assumption that this will help Coachella bookings going forward, but that doesn't make sense if Coachella is making good money being a pop-culture festival. I think this ends up being more of an FYF reboot if this is successful. FYF started as a single day indie/post-hardcore festival and then outgrew its own fanbase.

Also someone on Reddit is claiming the grounds are expanding for this event and that the capacity is actually 30k. Its an account under a week old though.

Sure, just not at Coachella.
This is my main takeaway at this point. Why would they book these bands for Coachella when they can put together a one-day event and sell tickets at these prices, some to people who already have their Coachella ticket?
Maybe this is their solution to rock audiences remaining somewhat rockist. Maybe it expands to more days and/or a bigger venue next year.

Maybe Vampire Weekend headline.
If this lineup was full of indie/alternative bands currently releasing good music I could see why people would be upset, but it seems like it was tailored exactly for people that would rather spend a day in Long Beach than spend 4 days and $500 at Coachella.
Who even on this lineup did Coachella miss? Grizzly Bear last year with their new album would have been cool, and Beach House this year with their new album would have been cool.

I think the people who complain about there not being enough rock/indie at Coachella would have been perfectly happy with anyone off the top two lines being there, new music or not.

Let's just let this fest morph into what FYF was 2012/2013 and call it at that. I'm perfectly fine not seeing any of these acts at Coachella. As long as they are spaced out a bit better kind of like FYF and Coachella used to be then I'm fine going to both and that is perfectly doable for pretty much anyone.

Goldenvoice Twitter confirmed. Being on a Friday makes me think this wasn't originally planned. Kinda weird, but happy for those who couldn't get tickets and weren't put off by the price hike? Curious how the pricing tiers will be this time, though. Not gonna lie, I'll be a bit annoyed if cheaper tiers are way easier for this one.

72 hours later and the extra day hasn't sold out. Turns out when you're up-front about the price tiers, you lose a lot of enthusiasm, and that initial $99 advertisement to drum up hype starts to make more sense. Granted, doesn't make it less annoying given the allotment of each tier available, and they also probably burned more good will than they were hoping for.

Bigger issue imo is they are doing a festival that is oriented towards late 20s and 30 year olds and putting it on a Friday. Work, childcare, etc are all much more difficult to maneuver on a Friday than a Saturday or even a Sunday
