I wouldn’t have cared if Rebecca ended up with boat guy, but the meet at the airport was dumb as hell. Lol
I thought the same thing then I thought back to how often the show references cheesy rom coms and tropes about rom coms and it kinda made the airport meet less dumb to me.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Finally watched the finale.
As someone who's had a hard time enjoying this season, I loved the finale. Very strong writing in the dialogue between characters, not so much in the plot points.
YAY The scene with Rebecca's mom in the pub. We got Sassy one more time. I fucking LOVE Barbara. "I like rugby more because they throw each other in the air like children and there's blood" THE DUTCH GUY! I'm glad Rebecca ends up with him.
NOPE Rupert's confrontation at the manager was so supervillain-y I thought it was Syndrome from "The Incredibles". From my GF: "Roy and Jamie should've both agreed to date Keely and also have been boyfriends together". I mean if Danny gets two girlfriends...she's got a point... I wish Ted's ex was with someone kind and thoughtful and, you know, not her ex therapist. It was about Ted dealing with his own stuff, and the wife's situation shouldn't be such a bummer. It was never about her.
FINAL THOUGHTS If nothing else, this show made Hannah Waddingham a star, and we should all be grateful.
...and yes I cried like baby when the Cat Stevens song came on.

i know that objectively this season was bloated and a bit messy, but i still truly loved 95% of it. definitely doesn't deserve the criticism being thrown at it (but i know critics gotta criticize). it should be upsetting to me that a half hour sitcom started doing 75 minute episodes in the finale, but personally i see it as quite an achievement since i was engaged and delighted for almost all of those minutes.
overall the show is catching shit for being a sitcom and then changing into something else, like a drama or even worse, a dramaedy (shudder). but i take issue with that, IMO it was still firmly a sitcom. sitcoms are funny and focused on the characters, this show never lost sight of that.
anyway it'll always be controversial, but in my book it was a big success. bravo to ted lasso and the whole team. show was like getting a hug from your TV.
needledropping "fight test" at the end got me:
"there are things you can't avoid / you have to face them when you're not prepared to face them"
^^^legit one of the best things i've ever learned from rock n roll. whole song has some of the most authentic lyrics in pop music history this side of neil young.
hearing rumors of a spin off. i'll be in front of my TV day one, LFG.

I get the criticism of this last season, but i also don't care. It's a fun, kindhearted show with engaging performers. It doesn't need to be anything more than that - not every single show needs to be Breaking Bad or Succession or whatever.
One thing that they actually improved upon this year was focusing more heavily on what the team was actually doing on the pitch. It was kind of infuriating in season 2 that they'd go for several episodes without giving even a hint of how the team was playing or where they were in the standings.
They actually had a similar issue in the (I think) second season of Friday Night Lights, where they didn't want people thinking it was just a show about football, so they really stayed away from the focus on the sport. The problem is that without the sport as the central axis, things feel kind of aimless. It would be like having a medical drama where you never show the doctors saving lives in the hospital or whatever.

2nd season of FNL was a mess for MANY reasons. I don't even include it in the rewatches.

writers strike season IIRC? was terrible. i love the memory wipe they did at the start of season 3 though. classic TV move that you couldn't get away with today. show was a straight scorcher from there until the finale IMO.

agreed, and the way they shot it in the finale was genuinely exciting! felt like i was watching a great sports movie. all of van damme/zorro's blocks, jamie's footwork, etc.

I miss Old TV in that way. Remember how Bewitched had two Darrins?!
It hit me during this episode when Rebecca was describing Rupert's courtship of her - I love Rupert. For the exact reasons Rebecca said, and I didn't even know it. He's had like, what, 10 scenes in the entire show? Probably a few more but not many. And he steals every scene and he is a great villain for this show.
It just dawned on me that he was also a Rupert in Buffy.
omg just now realizing that's the actor that plays Rupert

I had completely blocked the Landry murder plot line from my memory until now.
